Yes, interesting topic, as I've always wondered who people think could work as a Zelda newcomer. I still have yet to play ANY Zelda-game (shame on me, I know), but know some of the more known characters and tidbits of the games and stuff, but it's always interesting to see what the majority think. Anyway, my opinion:

Likely: Toon Zelda (I think she's a pretty popular option in Japan and she was planned for Brawl I think?)
Should: Tingle (he doesn't seem to be as popular as I thought he was but he seems to be one of the more known characters of the franchise with his (not-very-popular) spin-off games and stuff)
Bias: Tingle (I have nothing against the thing and kind of like the idea of "promoting" some existing AT's. Besides Little Mac and Tingle, I wish Isaac would also gain this status)

I am really doubting Toon Zelda.
With Wii Fit Trainer, Rosalina, and Greninja, we can see Sakurai is trying to add unique characters who ring something new to the table.
And when I think unique, I most certainly don't think Toon Zelda.
She is literally the same thing as Zelda.
While Tetra could be kinda unique, transformations are gone, and I really doubt he would add Toon Zelda without Tetra.

Though a Standalone Tetra seems to have a decent chance.

I'd imagine Toon Zelda is off the cards. Unless Zelda and Toon Zelda were move-for-move clones, it wouldn't make sense for them to give the Phantom to regular Zelda.

As for my own selection...

Likely: Ghirahim - I think it's an absolutely abysmal idea and Ghirahim has done nothing to prove his worth. That being said, Sakurai has already shown himself to be going for pseudo-popular, recent 'flavour of the year' type characters with Rosaninja so I can definitely see this happening. I'd probably be put off buying the game if it did happen, though.
Should: Tingle - This guy has done more than enough to get into Smash! He's got 3 games of his own, plenty of roles in Zelda games and a pretty important part in Wind Waker which had it's HD re-release recently. Sure, America hates Tingle, but likewise, Japan hates Little Mac. It's all about compromise, ya know?
Want: Pig Ganon - Screw regular Ganondorf, man (loljk he's one of my Project M mains). Pig Ganon is so much more iconic than regular Ganondorf. Plus, he's got heaps of potential as a unique playable character. Throwing his trident as a boomerang? Summoning bats made of fire? Teleporting around with his Up-B? The moveset practically writes itself. It's not like Sakurai is against this kind of thing - we've already got two Links and two Zeldas (emphasised by Zelda and Sheik being separated), so why not two Ganons?

I really don't see us getting any more Zeldas now that Sheik has her own slot and transformations are gone.

While I think that both Ghirahim and Tingle have decent chances at making it into the game, I believe a Toon character would be the best option, as it would give a sense of "legitimacy" to Toon Link instead of feeling like just a clone. In this case the only two options in my mind are Tetra and Vaati.
Tetra could be fun, with a pirate themed move set that allows her to blow up the competition. However, having THREE different forms of the same person seems to be a bit too much.
Vaati, a wind mage, would probably have a moveset that mixes offensive magic attacks with a mastery of the wind that lets him control where his opponents will end up while airborne. While I think he's the best option as he would give Toon Link a nemesis, he hasn't been in any recent games and he wasn't even a sticker in Brawl.

He's had three spin-off games of his own, and prominent appearances in many Zelda games (including the recently re-released Wind Waker). Plus, he's fairly popular in Japan. Some people cite his American hatebase as a reason against him, but in the same light, Japan is pretty firmly against Little Mac and that didn't stop Sakurai.

And to those who can't think of a viable moveset for him: see Wii Fit Trainer.

I'm one of the only other people in the world that would rather have Cranky, because Duck Tales deserves a rep.

The black space is for a Chorus Men/ Rhythm Heaven rep.

Roster is based off of the Sal leaks.
Also based off the time stamp theory of 55 characters, 16 newcomers.

The variable characters are King K. Rool, Ridley, Isaac, and Ray MK.
I chose them due to popularity and former AT status, to fill out the remainder.
("Variable" meaning they haven't been included in any Sal Leaks thus far)
(Vets aren't variable because there needs to be 39 of them to coincide with the 16 newcomer theory.)

I call this roster the "make everyone but Squirtle and Ivysaur fans happy roster." I would also remove Ray MK (sorry, he is most expendable) and include a retro rep, like Takamaru, Duck Hunt Dog, or Mach Rider. Do that and it would be perfect. I don't think we are going to get anywhere near that number of characters, but if that was the final roster I'd never complain about anything video game related ever again.

Actually, I'm not really sure there will necessarily be a R.O.B type situation. The thing is, none of the established newcomers have had an overall negative reception, even if they previously weren't the top of the polls in demand, as shown by Rosalina and Greninja. Heck, WFT, the true R.OB/Mr. G&W-style curveball of this game, managed to gather a surprising amount of popularity despite practically non-existant support. If she could get that level of praise and popularity, then surely it is unlikely that the Chorus Men won't.

In fact, the only character on Sal Romano's leak that has a decent chance of getting an overall negative reception would probably be Chrom really, if he ends up getting in over Ike and/or is barely different from the FE characters we already have had in the franchise.

R.O.B. actually ended up being pretty popular overall once they saw that he was a good character and earned his spot. Initially, he was hated, but he eventually ended up being a really popular addition (like everyone else that was added in Brawl).

Chrom being a semi-clone Ike would be much worse and he would end up being one of the worst received newcomer this series has ever seen (except maybe Pichu). Luckily, I have faith that Sakurai won't pull such a move for many reasons.

Path of Radiance was released on April 20th, 2005; the first of two games to include Ike as the main protagonist (although Micaiah shared that role with Ike in Radiant Dawn). Since the 20th falls on a Sunday, that would mean that if Ike is revealed around the 9th anniversary of Path Radiance, it will be either tomorrow or Monday.

It'd be a nice birthday present to me to see one of four Brawl veterans I am uncertain about return (Snake, Ivysaur and Squirtle, although I think those three are cut). Even if he doesn't, I still won't count Ike out of the game as he could be saved for later (IIRC, Marth and Zelda weren't released on an anniversary/important date).
