Every god damn character on the roster from what I saw.
Well, if you want to be more specifics, Marth, Roy, Falco, Ice Climbers, Mr. Game & Watch, Captain Falcon, Ness, Mewtwo, Jigglypuff, Pichu, Young Link, Sheik, Ganondorf, and Dr. Mario.
To add to this from what I can remember:
Ice Climbers because of that "Bowser Jr, Ridley, WW Link" rumor and because they were too obscure and or weird.
Game & Watch for the above reason.
Ness presumably because some people just didn't care for him. And maybe because of the Lucas Dojo page, which originally stated something like "can he possibly replace Ness?" and "up until now"
After Ness's reveal, it was changed to "can he possibly surpass Ness?"
Marth because there were other lords to choose from, and I guess maybe because some thought he was a clone of Roy.
Roy, Pichu, Dr. Mario, Young Link, and Falco because clones.
Sheik because of only being in one game. (similar to Sheik pre-SSB4 what with Skyward Sword)
Jigglypuff because of being "useless", not important, and a "waste of a slot."
....
But there were people who wanted Captain Falcon, Ganondorf, and Mewtwo gone!?
I know many people wanted Ganondorf to use a sword, but being removed entirely? Was it simply for being a clone?
I assume others might have wanted Mewtwo gone simply because they were pissy at how bad he was in Melee or some stupid reason involving tier lists.
I had such an anti-clone policy after Melee, that I cut Luigi from my roster in the pre-Brawl era.
I truly was mad.
Still mad now, but a more refined madness.
I actually defended the clones pre-Brawl and wanted them in the game...
Once a Smash Brother, always a Smash Brother, in my mind. Also, I just hated change.
Looking back at it, I could've had some sudaefrude (or however you spell it) towards the anti-clone people for getting what they wanted at the expense of having a unique and cool character removed with them, but I didn't think of it like that back then.
