Not really, I mean he is one of the original starters but thats as far as it goes really, charizard, mewtwo and pikachu are what I call Iconic.
I think the Anime helps Squirtle obtain his iconic status. There was the Squirtle Squad and May had a Squirtle as well. Oh and he was a starter in X/Y so he's somewhat relevant. Now I'll say that he isn't super iconic, but I personally think he's up there and yeah he isn't on par with the three you mentioned.
Now you may bring up Greninja and I will say idk why greninja was chosen other than the fact he is new and very liked (or possibly as a replacement water type...?) as for anything else idk maybe gamefreak has marketing plans with him who knows?
I agree, other than possibly popularity, I think it was mostly marketing. I like Greninja though, so I'm happy to see one of my favorites from Gen 6.
P.S. Technically squirtle and ivy may not even be cut but like I said their non iconicness really hurts them, they felt like really oddball additions in the first place only to justify the Pokemon trainer gimmic like dr. mario or pichu.
Eh, I think they fit in nicely with the Pokémon Trainer. Maybe not as their own character. I hate seeing my main cut, again. . .

This is the Character Discussion thread is it not?

I am discussing Metal Mario, who is a character. One of which who got his individualized existence through the original Smash Bros., and has immigrated to the Mario franchise as a smug rival of Mario's.
How am I being off-topic?

Metal Mario as a playable character? Then what would happen if Metal Mario finds the Metal Box and turns Metal Metal Mario...?

Metal Mario... Am almost tempted to agree with the idea cause of serious lack of heavy weight newcomers. Also, a 6th Mario character could still open the way for Impa and stuffz...

I'm gonna post a new roster I made at like one in the morning and get no responses on it because WHY NOT?!?!?
Starting Roster:

Complete Roster:

- Notes -
• K. Rool remains replaceable with Dixie Kong or Cranky Kong if need be. But I personally believe K. Rool has the strongest possibility currently.
• The Chorus Kids are essentially a filler for any other miscellaneous / retro character out there that may be confirmed and is not already on this roster. I've come to be really fond of the concept of having a Rhythm Heaven character in the game and the Chorus Kids are pretty iconic in comparison to most of the cast in the RH games. But I would be fine with just anyone really.
• I've actually come to a point where I think Pac-Man being in this game is actually really cool. Considering that Namco was one of the first (if not the first) Third-Party company to have games put on Nintendo Consoles. So I think it would really be awesome for the first Third-Party character to be a part of Smash Bros. But I would much rather prefer his World Design.
• This roster has 48 characters total, if this was a 50 character roster I would probably consider adding in a third Fire Emblem character and Ridley (sorry snake <33)

Not Metal Mario, Metal Mario.

BELLISSIMO!
Miamama! You meant that one? Why didn't you say so!

PacMan, Chorus Kids and Shulk out for Dixie Kong, Isaac and Impa. And am cool.

I still refuse to believe leaks. The Palutena leak being the most credible one of them all though...

That seems pretty legit. Good ish :chuckle:
Thank you!
PacMan, Chorus Kids and Shulk out for Dixie Kong, Isaac and Impa. And am cool.
I've been under the impression that there will be a third Third-Party character for the longest time, so I'm mostly sticking with Pac-Man because of the Special Flag appearing to be a Namco specific Assist Trophy of sorts.
I already said K. Rool can be swapped with Dixie, I doubt that both of them will appear together in the main game without DLC being a factor.
Chorus Kids can alternate with Isaac if he's revealed.
I am not adding another Zelda character.
I still refuse to believe leaks. The Palutena leak being the most credible one of them all though...
I only believe in the Palutena one. "Pokémon from Pokémon X and Y" is too vague for me. The Chorus Kids are jus what I think may actually represent Rhythm Heaven the best I guess, but as I said any of the other options from the game would be fine with me.

At this point, Impa is most likely not happening. Might as well hope she makes AT at least

Ariand, love your roster minus Pac-Man and Chorus Kids. Would rather see third FE rep and Dixie instead Solid 9.5/10

Impa is still the most likely newcomer for Zelda. Especially since Toon Zelda has pretty much no chance in hell cause of Zelda's Phantom.

Considering Shiek now has her own character slot, I think impa has serious competition.
Sheik still doesn't count as a newcomer however. In fact, her being separate makes it far more possibly, and believable to have Impa as a Sheik semi-clone. Not that that is extremely likely or anything, sure. But there's still a possibility!

Seriously, there was really a BIG FAT chance for Impa when Zelda showed up with the Phantom, and it being unexplained for so long. Even Famitsu teased : Phantom looks like a new move, the Sheik transformation may not happen. And it didn't... But for it to turn out like this? Pretty bitter experience.

Anyway, Rosalina has proofed that Sheik and Impa won't have to be alike at all. Situation still sucks after such a big blow, but there's still a small chance... After all, Toon Zelda is pretty much out cause of the Phantom. So it's most likely up between Impa and Tetra. Seeing how Namco likes these Student vs Teacher / Mentor- like rivalries, and rivalries in general (check Charizard vs Greninja!) I guess Impa still has an edge over any Zelda newcomer...

Impa has a minute chance, but nothing in comparison to Tingle, Ghirahim, Vaati or Tetra. Simply not popular or unique enough to be a big player.

Personally, I don't think any new semi-clones will enter this time around, considering that the newcomers we have so far come nowhere near close to being semi-clones.

Tingle? You serious? I think he's one of the most likely characters to show up as an AT again. Vaati and Ghirahim? You sure that Beast Ganon wouldn't take priority over him? Tetra is the only character I could agree with, but even then... She'd have too many similarities to both Toon Link and Sheik to be completely unique I think. Impa is easily the best choice, as she's also (MOST LIKELY) gonna be playable in Hyrule Warriors.

Not unique is a bland statement. Why? Rosalina. Peach semi-clone at best right? Look at what we got in the end!

I am betting that Impa would be far more unique to Sheik than Toon Link is to Link. And in that case, she's the most likely Zelda newcomer. Recent appearances? Check (OoT 3D, Skyward Sword, A Link Between Worlds (as an old woman however *sigh*) Hyrule Warriors - even mentoins / references in Twilight Princess and cameo in Wind Waker!) Moveset possibilities? Check (Skyward Sword ; barrier, high jumping ; time traveling ; magic / kungfu-like fighting style. Ocarina of Time ; Deku Nuts ; Ninja-weapons ; Sheik's Chain?? Also: Her being the Sage of Shadows (think invisibility / shadow attacks) Hyrule Warriors ; a big longsword and everything we haven't seen yet!

She has way more source material than people giver her credit for. And she's still easily the best choice. Rivalities seem bigger in this game than before. And Namco likes those things to (check Tekken and Soul Calibur). Greninja vs Charizard is a great example! Lucario vs Mewtwo is also likely gonna happen. Sheik vs Impa is another thing that would be an awesome sight to see!

@ Diddy Kong Diddy Kong I agree it'd be a fun rivalry and Impa isn't lacking for moveset potential, but her competition is fierce and makes more sense. The TP side of the roster - make no mistake, it is entirely based around Twilight Princess - leaves no room for her and the addition of Sheik to this group, to make it four, makes me think Sakurai is done with that aspect of Zelda. Thus I look to the Toon Link side and see it is greatly lacking, and that is why I give precedence to Tingle, Vaati or Tetra.

I'll admit Tetra may be out of place there, but the other two are rivals/villains for Toon Link who is all on his own in the roster. Impa has no place in the Wind Waker games, or in Twilight Princess, so she's in the same boat as Ghirahim. While I'm not the hugest fan of Ghirahim, his moveset potential is fantastic, far better than Impa's. I'd recommend going to the Uniqueness Tier List and looking at the Zelda Week submissions on both characters, the difference is night and day.

That's where I foresee some trouble next game. Beyond Little Mac and Palutena, which other newcomers are going to stick around? Are Greninja, Chrom and the three shock characters (counting Villager because, based on that interview, Sakurai lumps him in with WFT) really going to become permanent Smash fixtures now? Something has to give, eventually. I'm leaning toward that something being them.
I expect characters such as WFT, the Villager, Little Mac and Palutena to become permant residents, whereas characters like Chrom and Greninja are more questionable.

Well, Impa in her Hyrule Warriors appearance could work out easily. As it's a mixed sort of appearance between her Skyward Sword and Ocarina of Time designs. Remember, they did this for Ganondorf in Melee to. As he was heavily inspired by that one demo of that unreleased Zelda game. Even posing with the same sword and all!

Zelda is also 100% based on her Twilight Princess design in that game as it looks like.

Impa wouldn't look out of place at all. And even if... I guess her design matching up with Toon Link's as a Skyward Sword character also isn't too out of place actually. Less likely, sure. But not impossible. If so, Vaati also is out of place cause Toon Link is Wind Waker specific. Then there's Tingle, who's most likely gonna be an AT again - and Tetra, who as you says has similar problems.

Ghirahim is another option I guess yes. His moveset potential would be amazing. I'd have no problems with him earlier before Sheik's reveal, but now I do as he's direct compitition for Impa of course. If Impa outrightly replaced Sheik, there'd be all the more room for Ghirahim. And Impa vs Ghirahim would've been an awesome rival battle! It's actually a big damn shame we aren't going to see that happen...

I'm gonna post a new roster I made at like one in the morning and get no responses on it because WHY NOT?!?!?
Starting Roster:

Complete Roster:

My main complain is... no Isaac but Chorus men. Apart from that pretty great roster.

I have absolutely no complaints with this roster. Chrom would be nice, but isn't needed.
Final score: 10/10
Perfect roster! :088:

Tiers do excist, no doubt.

Am just not believing any of the supposed 'leaks' yet. Outside of the Palutena one, there are not too many credible ones. And even IF they were credible, how many did we had during pre-Brawl that sounded believable?

Maybe it's because I really, REALLY don't want PacMan, Mii, Shulk and Chorus Men though...

Putting a biased wall on a leak whom has had Wii Fit Trainer in their leaked information before should make you believe in him.

According to the semi-reliable Wikipedia Capcom and Konami have been putting games much earlier than Bandai or Namco. Seems hypocritical you have a respect for history yet remove Konami's biggest star from the roster who was also the first Third-party character of the series, changing most people minds around about having third-party characters on board. Do you have a reliable source that Namco was the first Third-Party company to publish games on a Nintendo Console or are you just assuming that Namco was the first?

It makes it more believable yes but personal bias or not, it seriously lacks a few important things to make it believable. He could still be bull****ting us despite knowing about Wii Fit Trainer.

(This guy makes me ashamed to support Shadow in the first place)
Ok, I'll bite. I know very well that Shadow is highly unlikely, but he still has his merits if Sakurai were to consider more Sonic characters. But Mewtwo coming back is even more of a pipe dream considering that we only have room for one more Pokemon character at the rate we're going, and that spot is for Jigglypuff, a member of the original 12 guy party, so Mewtwo is anything BUT likely. I know you guys will shake this off, but I won't be surprised when I see the finalized roster without Mewtwo or Shadow.

But you've completely changed the entire subject, you said you did not want Shulk to be playable, that's why I was making fun of you, he's one of the characters with the least doubt at all!

Mewtwo doesn't look anything like Greninja. Pokémon Trainer being split up leaves up two more spots, and Mewtwo being considered for Brawl and even Smash 64?

AAAAAAAUUUUUGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!
You are driving me crazy today, Diddy Kong! No, we only have ONE SPOT LEFT!!! Sakurai did have more Pokemon reps than Mario in Brawl, but won't be making that mistake again! When Jigglypuff comes in, the Pokemon franchise is SET, unless we get a sixth Mario representative, which is highly doubted at this point

Are you a developer of Smash? If not, how are you so sure about how many 'spots' Pokémon is going to get? Regardless of 'spots', Pokémon Trainer took as much time to develop as 3 full characters, aside from a Down B (though their Down B itself took some time to work to I'm sure). Same with Sheik and Zero Suit Samus. Squirtle and Ivysaur are gone, most likely.

So that makes: :4pikachu::4charizard::4lucario::4greninja:

While Brawl's roster was: :pikachu2::squirtle::ivysaur::charizard::jigglypuff::lucario:, and :mewtwopm: was even planned!

So who's to say there aren't 'spots' left for Pokémon? Jigglypuff hardly takes any development time I guess, and Mewtwo is number 1 most requested character, plus again: planned for Brawl and even Smash 64. There's also Sakurai's quote of : 'We are thinking about it' when he was asked if Mewtwo's Mega Y Evolution was to be included.

He's still likely. Just not balantly obvious anymore with Greninja.
