Because each starter type needs to get represented for some reason.
Even when we get a curveball like Charizard coming back solo with Greninja coming out of nowhere, we still try to make sense of it with "mur patterns!"

Well, here is what the roster is shaping up to be. On top we have Every revealed character + all Brawl Vets - Snake - Ivysaur & Squirtle + Leaks.
This gives us 48 character slots.
On the bottom I have put a few characters which I feel could come in to fill in the last 2 to 4 spots, eventually leaving us with a 50~52 character roster.
Just my personal opinion, but I think you should take off Marshal and replace him with Krystal.

What's the point of replacing one unlikely character with another?

Well to be fair, Krystal wasn't exactly shot down like a large chunk of characters were.
I assure you I've heard enough arguments from both sides. I won't call Krystal likely, but I won't get into a debate.

That is true not to mention there was a miniscule amount of star fox related material in the smash direct
I guess people just want a Rhythm Heaven character. Either the Wrestler, Karate Joe, that one girl, or Marshal.
There's always a point when said replacing character is Grovyle the Thief.
Ya i know that, but I dont understand where all this recent popularity comes from. Was there something in the Direct that i missed?
Well, it's not the worst leak I've seen.
Oh i see. The same guy as the previous who leaked Mii, Pacman and Little Mac? I assume this came before the direct. I find it strange that he/she leaks these very close to directs, but i mean whatever, thats their choice. Also, just "Pokemon X/Y" character raises some eyebrows. I'm not sure what to think of this, but it certainly is interesting.
Well, the same source leaked "Wii Fitness trainer" and "Boy from Animal Crossing" so it's not surprising that he would address Greninja as "a Pokemon X/Y" or Marshall as "Choir men".
Im not going to rely too heavily on it, because we have yet to see Mii and Pacman, who both have good chances anyways. I guess were going to find out at E3, where Pacman will most likely be revealed.
I'm just happy it's one of the few that isn't "I work at Nintendo. I only know so little though." and then goes into detail about characters everyone expects.
Well the leak didn't reveal the full roster, it's only released bits and pieces before major events. Before E3 2013, the source revealed
I always take leaks with a grain of salt, regardless of how well they hold up. That being said, it looks like it is quite possible
A fourth Star Fox clone with little importance to the series? That sounds inevitable.
It would be naive to assume that means literally anything.
Also to be fair, Krystal was one of the few characters even directly talked about by Sakurai and Co. That's more than I can say for many characters.

I'd be really surprised if we didn't get at least fifty characters when all is said and done. I really don't see anymore cuts aside from Snake and Squirtle/Ivysaur (though I guess Ike has an extremely slight chance, but it's negligible) and I expect at least fourteen newcomers (if we put put Melee veterans together as well). Since that's the same character increase as with Smash 64, it's hardly unrealistic.

I'm guessing he's have a lot of moves based on rhythm button pushes. Such as his AAA combo having a rhythm to make it the most effective.
Yeah it's pretty interesting indeed, there should be stunning involved when it comes to combos.
