Olimar can only have 3 Pikmin but Diddy still is able to have 2 Bananas.

This, is what I call justice.
So whats everyone's opinion on squirtle and ivysaur?
If they're disbanding transformations, i would think charizard being solo should be expected along with the other two.
They are probably gone. Which is a shame. Cause Squirtle & Ivysaur >>> Sheik.

In your mind, everything >>> Sheik.

Even a pile of dogcrap would be better than Sheik. :p

And I'll miss Sheik's chain move. The new side-B also makes me sad for Snake...

The new down-B has a weird name. "Bouncing Fish?" Then again, I recall her back air being called "Flying Swallow." I think another move was called "Butcher Bird."

It definitely is. Intermittent discussion about Sega and Rare isn't nearly as bad as posts consisting of nothing but Spongebob gifs.
No. It isn't only that, it's also the silly arguments people had before then. But whatever, I'd rather not drag this out.

Well, really her old Side B didn't have any other use then being a tether. So this new move is for the best.

Most people think they're gone.

The situation reminds me a lot of Toon Link before his reveal.

Pikachu
Charizard
Squirtle
Ivysaur
Lucario
Greninja
Mewtwo
Jigglypuff
Pichu

Assuming the five unannounced veterans return, and Squirtle and Ivysaur being standalone like Charizard, that would be 9 slots. Even without Pichu and Jigglypuff, that'd be 7.

Too much? I know Pokemon is one of the biggest franchises, but...

Technically as GS came before Pikmin that statement doesn't really apply to Isaac, but it is strange at the relative lack of feasible new series (that actually have a chance) from the previous decade compared to ones before it.
...yeah. I can't really think of much that happened during 2001-2005. I mean, AT's and stuff, sure, but beyond that? Characters? Less so.

I want to hear more information from Sakurai in regards to the used-to-be transformation characters and how they are handled now. Are they really having individual slots now or will they still share the same slot with each other and just being toggled between each other like you could with Zelda/Sheik and the Pokemon Trainer's Pokemon in the Brawl roster.

So currently I have no comment in regards to the fates of Squirtle and Ivysaur.

Well let's face it, Squrtle and Ivysaur were only there to fill in the niches for Pokemon Trainer. Squirtle being the fast agile character, Ivysaur being then middle weight ranged character, and Charizard being the powerhouse. Considering that Pokemon Trainer is gone, that niche to fill is pretty much gone, and what you're left is filler. Obviously Charizard was chosen out of the three because of the raw popularity, and to an extent probably to fill in the quota of more heavyweights and the excuse to show off more Mega Evolutions.

Also like I said, it's a much smarter choice to only keep one of three and flesh it out better instead of trying to bring back all three.

I'm 30/70 about Squirtle and Ivysaur returning, but I guess you could say I'm in denial. I'll get over it someday. So, the most probable scenario would be Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Charizard, Mewtwo, Lucario and Greninja.

Most people would disagree with me, but I don't find getting 7/8 pokémon to be that unlikely. Brawl has 6 pokémon, at least 7 planned with Mewtwo, and potentially 9 with Plusle and Minun.

If you wanted quality discussion all the time you chose the wrong fanbase. :troll:

To be fair, people think these two are gone because they weren't shown with Charizard, the most famous and popular of the three (and the only one capable of Mega Evolutions), and because there aren't going to be transformation characters. So there is some reasoning behind it past just being one of the more likely cuts, which is pretty much all people had to justify their claims TL wouldn't return.
Oh I guess Conductor Link too... but again, that wasn't the same Link...

6 Pokemon is reasonable. But anything more than that...

Oh so now 6 pokemon characters is seen as reasonable?
I guess the roster will be looking pretty interesting from what we currently have learned now...

It will be by virtue of varies characters receiving notable changes, which means a lot of characters are going to feel fresh.

Also, the newcomers themselves may stray from expectations, but at the same time they are still of solid quality and are taking inspiration from other fighting games.

Am I the only one thinking that there will be 2 FS per characters ?

Look at 27:47 in this video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xUWnQu2Grs
It seems like that Little Mac is brawling Bowser in the same way than in Punch Out. Maybe the alternate costume will give Little Mac another FS ?
In this way, for characters like Luigi, Kirby, and more, we may be having both the old and new FS ?

Charizard and Greninja is in here, am I the only one who thinks Sceptile needs to be apart of this? Gen 1, 3 and 6 for fire, grass and water???
Welcome to Smash Boards!
Eh, I personally don't think Sceptile is needed.

I think that's just the camera view being manipulated to make it look like Punch Out.

Concerning a Grass-type because it fits a "pattern:"

This is exactly how Sakurai wants you to think. It certainly isn't impossible that we get someone like Treecko or Sceptile, but trying to jump to an answer this early is a little foolish. There maybe a pattern, there may be evidence to suggest a pattern, but Sakurai is notorious for making it look like there's a pattern and then destroying all expectations. There are two Pokemon starters in the lineup so far, a fire and a water, so maybe there will be a grass one? Maybe. The chances do certainly look better. You can have your doubts and your reasoning, but suggesting that this deconfirms characters like Mewtwo and Jigglypuff is just outlandish. That is exactly what is happening here. You have every right to think that it may happen, but again, just one of those patterns that Sakurai is taunting us with.

Had we known about the removal of transformations prior to the direct, this would have been a whole different story. Logically, we would assume that Charizard, Ivysaur and Squirtle would all return separately with Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Lucario and Mewtwo returning. there's seven right there, and most would agree that's what would happen. Then the direct would have come, we would see Greninja, and we would have all agreed the he was taking Squirtle's place, and by extension, some would think Squirtle would be leaving as well. I find it very strange that we went from thinking there was very likely going to be 7 characters from Pokemon, down to only 5/6, being Pikachu, Jiggs, Lucario, Charizard and Greninja (+Grass-type or Mewtwo.) Sometimes i wonder about the logic some of us have.

Did anyone notice in the direct Ridley clearly picks up something? Probably Pikachu by his tail but I'm not positive. It looks like he is swinging around something.
We see him following Pikachu, his tail/wing obscures the screen a bit, then he turns around once, moves ahead little and then stops. Well, this is what I remember.

Speak for yourself.
I've pretty much been on the assumption that if the Trainer aspect were to be taken out, Charizard alone would show up.
And I wasn't wrong.

I'm not quite sure about Ridley yet. Sakurai is such a Troll. I had a mini-heart attack when he said that ZS. Samus wouldn't be in this new game. It pretty looks like that he won't be a playable character, but who knows.

I had the assumption that, at the very least, Charizard was a guarantee, whether or not he was with the Trainer, which I have had reasonable doubt of returning anyways. What happens to Ivysaur and Squirtle could go either way. They're technically not deconfirmed, but I am very prepared to not see them return, to the point where i don't even expect them.

Why exactly are we forced to get a Grass type?
Cuz...y'know...triangles...and stuff.

Or something.

Honestly there's no grass types that fit the bill, and people just like...neatness? I'm not really sure.

To complete the Pokémon starter triangle... and to fill the void left by Ivysaur, I suppose.

We aren't forced to get one, but we should.
Yes, because we got the same exact thing in Smash 64 and Melee, and last time it was around it was implemented so incredibly well everyone was crying rainbows.

Well, here is what the roster is shaping up to be. On top we have Every revealed character + all Brawl Vets - Snake - Ivysaur & Squirtle + Leaks.
This gives us 48 character slots.

On the bottom I have put a few characters which I feel could come in to fill in the last 2 to 4 spots, eventually leaving us with a 50~52 character roster.
