He cut 2 of the most important Pokemon characters EVER. Something nobody thought would happen. And people are acting like a barely diverse character less important than Squirtle and Ivysaur is BOUND to stay just because she was in the first one???
Jiggs can get Fairy moves to make her fresh again.

Squirtle and Ivysaur despite being so IMPORTANT, really didn't get anything new in gen 6. And before you say MEGA FORMES. Do note that those weren't Squirtle and Ivysaur to Mega Evolve.

Also, with tethering gone, that's one more point against Sawr.

I guess I'm part of the few who thought the main character from the Pokémon franchise was an awesome addition, even with the mechanics he had. PM isn't even official.

We have a winner here!
:estatic:
So what if PM isn't official. We're talking about fan reception here. PTs exclusion was praised by Smash fans who when PM released.

Sakurai is going George RR Martin on all of our favourite characters. :troll:
I always use that to describe Sakurai. "Don't worry! They're still coming! Newcomers are on their way! They're gonna be AMAZING!"

Guys, just because there were 6 Pokemon characters in Brawl (that were not separate) does not mean Sakurai doesn't give a **** about balancing out the roster from the point of view of a character select screen.

People only think he doesn't care about it because THEY don't think it matters.
also PT wasn't nearly as separate as ZSS/Sheik. Trust this from someone who's played so much of Brawl lately rushing towards 100%. Sorry guys, but it's the truth. What they meant when saying 39 was 39 to develop, not 39 on the tier list.

now is probably a bad time to say we could have more than five mario characters isnt it

That's not a good argument, specially knowing that Sakurai explicitly said that Ness was nearly getting cut in favour of Lucas.

Sometimes people just make they're own rules or some stuff like that or what? Like the "slots left" or amount of reps per franchise... *sigh*
I think the best and most likely outcome will be that both are added.

Jiggs won't be cut, there's no reason to, she's a staple to the franchise. We may not see Mewtwo and just get the five, or hell maybe the main series' will have six reps each.
Nice try. But, we know you're not Sakurai. Even if you did fool us, we could just say you're lying. Because Sakurai is a liar.

I'm not sure. Like, I think it'll be fine if there were 6 slots in Pokemon compared to Mario's 5 (if that's it for them) on the roster. I know this is a weak argument, but I think if any franchise has the capability of having many slots on the roster is Pokemon. There are many important, popular Pokemon that are able to get on the roster. They have to pick 4-6. I think 6 max is the best bet.

I don't think Sakurai feels the same way.

What if he's Iwata?
I'd ask him to say something funny.

Not everyone plays Project M or likes it at that. I'm not saying I don't, but again, not everyone praised the removal of Pokémon Trainer. Most complaints seemed to be the stamina mechanics, not the ability to switch between Pokémon.
And besides, all I said was that I was one of the few that liked Pokémon Trainer. I still think cutting him wasn't the best decision. But I'm fine with Solo-Zard. Charizard isn't everyone's favorite so of course people will complain that Squirtle and Ivysaur are cut. Heck, I would.

Mewtwo won't be cut, he's the most famous legendary Pokemon!
Roy won't be cut, he's our boy!
Dr. Mario won't be cut, he's easy to develop!
Pokemon Trainer won't be cut, he's the main protagonist of Pokemon!

No character has a reason to be cut, but it still happens.

"Zero Suit Samus will not be returning."
Jokes excluded.

Actually all of those had reasons......

Felt this from the beginning. I'm really excited for Melee 2.5: Now with more best-friend doubles*

* = No, I'm not making a joke against the game.
Oh yeah, speaking of team matches, I seriously hope some several characters get more obvious color swaps. This most notable with the Pokemon, which only get a hue adjustment based on the color.

Black shiny Greninja pls.

Also shiny Lucario.

And yeah...it's sad to think that characters who have been in Smash from the beginning can be cut, but it could happen...

I wish nobody was cut. Even Pichu. Funny thing is, Pichu stood out in some ways from the other clones with the self-damaging gimmick.

And once Jiggs is cut, everyone will scramble to find an excuse. The fact is, she can still be cut, being an original is not a free ticket. She was almost cut before.
Ok, I'll bite!

I would love to see Mewtwo coming back, but it still doesn't sound right to cut off Jiggs just to get Mewtwo back into the game.

They could easily include Jiggs and Mewtwo. Pokemon Trainer is no more, so theres 3 potentially open slots. Greninja and Charizard filled 2, so theres one left in that sense.

Pokemon Trainer takes more development time than 3 characters do separately, due to balance and whatnot. I can now see the Pokemon lineup being Pikachu, Jiggs, Lucario, Charizard, Greninja and Mewtwo.

This puts things quite up in the air because Sakurai stated a while back that "there are no cuts thus far" but also stated "not all characters will come back for this iteration." We dont know the full circumstances, because with PKMN TRNR now gone, there may be other plans for cuts as well.

Jiggs being a 64 veteran, I think she is more probable to stay than Mewtwo being included, although I do think there is a high chance that they are both included to round off the Pokemon roster.
To be fair, Sakurai never definitively said there would be cuts, although they are likely. As for no cuts, he's referring to characters he had planned at the time he said that (back nearly a year ago), not that he hadn't cut anyone from Brawl.
Nope, I mean that 'characters' and 'slots' are the only words that should be used.
Considering that "slots" don't give out the exact amount of characters, I would try avoiding that as well.
Good, if very undecided roster. I don't think Dixie has a chance anymore. She has to clone Diddy's moves to work, the kremlings and lack of Tropical Freeze Snomads cemented Sakurai's 2012 mindset on DK and the continued focus on unique sets only helps K. Rool. I can only see her getting in if the roster is pretty huge, 50+, and after K. Rool.
This roster is almost certainly going to go over 50+ characters; it's just that most people though in "slots" rather than total amount of characters due to the existence of characters.
Not to rain on another character's parade, but somebody brought something up in another forum regarding Isaac I didn't even think about. None of the unlockable AT's were shown in the montage or press release images, so to say that Isaac is out of the woods just because we didn't see him in the lineup yesterday might be premature. His 'chances' are probably the same as they were heading into the direct. I'll admit, that does change my opinion a bit thinking about that now.

Sorry N3ON.
Did any unlockable ATs get shown off for this game? I heard there were some, but I'm not sure. That said, still not optimistic about him.
One thing that might be nice to do, since the 3DS version is releasing early, is if you unlock the entire roster on the 3DS version you can sync to the Wii U version and not have to unlock the characters a second time. Can just pick up and play.
I'd certainly would be all for time. Eliminates the redundancy of unlocking characters twice.
Ridley had no chance anyway, and people should've seen that long time ago, like Chrono did.
ChronoBound saw Ridley as a 50/50 before yesterday, although he was pessimistic.

Still maintain that Ridley was a strongly likely character for this game; it's just that he unfortunately didn't get in.

Roy was mine, but there was still a reason, his time had passed.
I could say the same about Mr. Game & Watch and R.O.B but I like both of those characters and they have a huge history. I didn't want Roy back due to him being a near complete clone of Marth, but theoretically they could de-clone characters.
