I'm like 99% sure Ike stays. He's pretty much the 2nd or 3rd most popular character in the franchise, and he's one of 3 lords to star in multiple games. The only thing I'm unsure about with FE is whether or not Roy's larger popularity in Japan and slightly larger in America, and his veteran status will put him over Chrom or Lucina.

Roy was cut due time constraints, not because he was replaced by Ike.

How was Roy the most recent star if his game didn't even come out yet?

Okay, granted FE6 may have been delayed and originally meant to be released near Melee's date, but Roy, being a clone, wasn't initially planned for Melee.

If Sakurai wanted the most recent lord during Melee, he would have gone with Leif (who's even playable in 2 games) over Marth (or Roy over Marth if you believe he's the most recent star). But that didn't happen, and Marth got in due to other reasons, then followed by his clone.

Robin's chances have always been greatly overestimated, especially when one considers the character usually serves only as a countermeasure to Chrom, which is a petty exercise i. While I would strongly argue Roy remains the most inordinately overrated Fire Emblem character in the highest degrees (especially by the likes of Chronobound), nonetheless Robin's chances are, as I have stated, greatly overstated. It is not to say Robin is impossible, however, but rather improbable.

That said, April will be an interesting turn of events, for better or especially worse.

I still really want Roy, Doctor Mario, Pichu and even Young Link back. Hopefully, they will be DLC someday, at least, haha.
I especially miss Doctor Mario. The sounds of his vitamins is awesome.

Falco and Ganondorf were more well known than Roy, so yes, Roy being a clone has importance in this case.
Except him not being in Brawl has to do with nothing but time constraints really. Mewtwo was pretty well known. And he wasn't in Brawl either, or a clone.

Man, it's really too bad that today's pic deconfirms Ridley.

I mean, it being on the Pyrosphere is one thing, but the Smash Ball is PURPLE. Yeesh. Sorry, guys. Guess we missed the boat again. Hopefully the rest of the roster will make up for it.

Mewtwo remained popular, but Roy was outdated by the time of Brawl.
So then why wasn't Mewtwo in Brawl? They both weren't in for the same reason. Time constraints. And if being outdated meant much we wouldn't of had Ness, Marth, G&W, Falcon to an extent, ROB, ect.

I also see Chrom being playable. It's not just that he's unique, he's also Fire Emblems "Recent Shining Star" of late.

Here's my theory. As far as Fire Emblem goes, Sakurai adds in Marth and the Recent Shining Star of the time. Roy was that Recent Shining Star at the time of Melee, but Ike at the time of Brawl, now it's Chrom.

But now that Chrom is stealing Ike's thunder lately, I'm worried about Ike getting cut, he was one of my best characters. I'm not saying we can't have Ike and Chrom too, it's just not likely considering that Sakurai cut Roy from Brawl.
I don't think that's necessary. Roy was planned to be with Ike and Marth, but he was cut because they didn't have the time.

Not to mention that Ike grew into an icon for Fire Emblem. He's still a big deal to the series in general. He was also one of the most popular newcomers to Smash, so I think it's a common idea that Smash wouldn't be as good without him.

From what I said earlier, I'm not saying that Chrom is the be all end all most unique choice, but common sense dictates that the most iconic character from a game would always be considered. Robin is nowhere to be seen in most advertisements from what I've seen. You have to admit that he would make a whole lot of sense, and it's not like it's impossible for Chrom to be unique.

Plus, if you want to get into specifics, those of you who argue, "Not another swordsman!" That's what we would have had in Brawl. 3 guys with swords. Yup.

There was something else I wanted to say, but I can't remember what it was.

EDIT: Oh yes. I remember now.

Basically, Chrom is too much like Ike? Ike was originally fast and strong in Path of Radiance. In Brawl, he was slow and strong. They altered him in Smash for who knows why..maybe Sakurai wanted to make him as different from Marth as possible and fit him into a specific niche? I mean I'm not being a **** here, I just honestly feel like that was it. I could be wrong.

Anyway, my point is, is that Sakurai isn't afraid to mess with source material to make a character work. So I don't see why there is so much fear for Chrom getting in when it's a very likely scenario.

The more I ponder, the more I convince myself that a Chrom/Lucina tagteam will appear.

Sakurai abandons the Dixie/Diddy tagteam mechanic in Brawl because he could not iron out the wrinkles. Let us say he investigates FE this time around to see if the series adds anything new. And lo and behold, he realizes that the new feature is a tagteam mechanic.

Perfect.

Ness, Marth, Game and Watch, and Captain Falcon make Nintendo History, Roy doesn't.
Pretty much the only characters important to Nintendo as a whole are the primary protagonists of each franchise, considering that games may come and go without other characters from a series, but generally always include the primary protagonist. Other characters are simply important to their individual franchises. (Example, Zelda is still Zelda without (surprisingly) Zelda and Ganon appearing. Metroid is still Metroid without Ridley appearing.)

If you think that the likes of Ness and Marth make Nintendo what it is today, you're sorely mistaken. Even Captain Falcon is debatable, if it weren't for his passing memetic status.

I can't wait to Sakurai to troll everyone and put Lyn as the 3rd FE playable character. :awesome:

After TL and Lucario, I don't have any doubt Ike will be cut.
Honestly looking back when these two where the two people said had the most chance being cut, they didn't really have anything going against them except fan made patterns and were actually very likely to return, So justifying Ike's fate because of their inclusion doesent exactly work. That being said Im sure Ike will make a return so all three of the fan patterns will be smashed to bits.

At this point there is very little that can be said about Fire Emblem Characters that hasn't already been said a hundred other times.

At this point the only things we know in regards to fire emblem is regards to smash is that one, Marth is now been the 'face' of the series in smash in all three games featuring FE. Ike was place as a priority character over Roy (if he was actually planned) during Brawl. Roy was in the Brawl data (Though I've seen mixed information on why that data is there ranging from possible character plans to imported melee data to a different character all together) . At this point there is no evidence that anyone is returning and the only thing related to fire emblem has been the Awakening Arena Ferox stage.

That's really all we know, the rest has been speculation between Ike's popularity and Awakening revelence wiith a few other character possibilities scattered between the various games including Micicah, Lyn, and so on. Given how basic of a situation that is currently, how is it the one that receives the most returning arguments for or against them.

Mmm, debatable. Marth and Ness are classics in Nintendo history. Ness just got recreated for the Wii U with Earthbound on Virtual Console, and Marth kept on coming since Shadow Dragon.

From what we know, it should be assumed that if Ike is cut, that Roy has no hope of coming back. At least I would think.

If Ike ISN'T replaced, and we get for example Chrom, then I would assume the priority list would go : Marth, Chrom, Ike, Roy.

It's not hard to believe that Fire Emblem would get a third. It's a series that has grown a bit, and it has quite a few popular characters.

Sakurai had four criteria for character additions.

I don't think being a very important part of Nintendo history was one of those four.

Plase, can we discuss something that is NOT Fire Emblem? I mean, in the past, it was even fun to joke and say that you wanted to discuss Fire Emblem. But now, I hate to see that every time I check this thread, there is a Fire Emblem discussion. Please. Let's discuss something else.

So, what do you guys think? Should we discuss something else? Or should we still discuss Fire Emblem? Don't you ever dare to choose the second option.

...

That being said, I can't think of something else.

Unless swords are really stopping Sakurai to bring diversity that Chrom isn't added. :p
Ganondorf cut because he owns a sword.

Ridley scrapped because his Other M tail is sword-like.

Kirby cut because Final Cutter.

Fox cut because some of his kicks do slashing damage.

Luigi cut because when he does his chop his hand is vaguely blade-shaped.

Everyone cut because every character is capable of wielding the Beam Sword.

So many cuts and not a sword in sight.

I just think people need to stop viewing it as, 'Sakurai said he's looking for uniqueness. That means every single character is going to be super unique. Characters aren't unique because I say they aren't"

Chrom can easily...EASILY be unique. Roy had fire in some of his attacks. Chrom can't have blue fire or something? Just as an aesthetic thing. Give him some flare. Sure, he'd obviously use the Falchion, but what about throwing lances? Stabbing with them? What about an archer attack?

I can almost guarantee that Sakurai doesn't look at a character and instantly toss them aside. I'm sure he would do some research and examine all of the possibilities. The most glaring thing between Ike, Chrom and Marth, is that Chrom has several different types of weapons at his disposal. He can use them.

Also, mind you, that every single character in Smash Bros at this point has been a major character/cover art/iconic character. Besides MAYBE Jigglypuff, but she was popular at the time of her inclusion. Chrom dominates Robin in the regard that he is much more marketable. Disagree with that if you will, but I see that as fact. You have to consider the people who aren't as familiar with Fire Emblem. If they see Chrom and then see Awakening, they'll say, "OH. That's Chrom".

I mean obviously marketing the character isn't everything. But Sakurai isn't an idiot. He picks characters that have unique abilities, and have appeal to the largest audience. That is where Chrom wins. (NOTE: Smashboards is NOT the largest audience)

I really don't want any characters to be "unique" like Roy was "unique", but I hardly think that's going to be an issue.

Also, to add, Chrom's Falchion is drastically different from Marth's. They're the same sword, but it was apparently broken and reforged at some point from a Rapier to a Greatsword/Broadsword. So their (Chrom and Marth's) primary attacks would be different solely on that regard.

Why do people bring up this "Sakurai is looking for uniqueness" argument so much anyway? It's not like he's doing this for the first time ever or something....
