Obviously I don't speak for all Mario fans, but I know many Daisy fans want Daisy first and foremost, many Waluigi fans in turn are not Captain Toad fans and Paper Mario fans want him due to their love of his series more than because he's a Mario character. Peculiar argument, hope it's not what actually happens.
Yeah... speaking as someone who absolutely adores the first two Paper Mario games, Mario has always been the least interesting thing about them. Though I think it's kinda unfair to group Paper Mario fans into a box like that, as I'm sure many think a paper fighter with all of the tools Mario uses in those games would be an interesting character.

Speak for yourself. Mario himself is one of my favorite things about the games. Part of the reason I want him is to bring back some of Mario's whimsy that he lost in the transition to Smash.

Little late, but I remember hearing Sonic was added in Brawl because he got a large amount of support, primarily from the west. So it's not like the west is totally ignored.

As for Samurai Goroh, I made a moveset for him ages featuring a mix swordplay and sumo wrestling (he has a few sumo mannerisms in F-Zero GX) I'll see if I can dig it up.

If we're going to have a katana user i would rather have this character

Of course that will never happen based on a number of reasons including her constant decrease in relevancy :(
Lyn doesn't is my favorite Lord and choice for Smash (That is Micaiah)...

But hey! Would make me happy see her in Smash too.

Do we have any reason to believe why David Wise would be composing Smash tracks and we do know anything about when David Wise got hired? That would really help to indicate whenever or not composing Smash OSTs or OSTs for the new DK game is more likely.
The extent of what we know is that, according to an unnamed source Chad and Hyle, the Kongversation hosts, spoke to at E3, David Wise is working on "a project for Nintendo."

David Wise is -the- DK composer, so odds are it's a new DK game, but considering the wording of "project" and the possibility of a ballot character being chosen from the early results (where the majority of people will have voted), the alternative is him remixing a track or two for a DK stage in Smash. The team got the Street Fighter composer to remix the Ryu and Ken themes for Suzaku Castle, so it's not out of the question they'd enlist David Wise as well if need be.

If Vaati and Ghirahim were confirmed to be the same spirit (like Ganon and Demise) that would consequently make both of them the most recurring villain besides Ganon himself.

So yeah I'd be supporting that ****. Especially if Vaati or Ghirahim appear in Tri Force Heroes / Zelda Wii U respectively.

I'm not a particularly big Toad supporter, but the little guy has more than earned his place among Nintendo's all stars. He's probably the most famous character not playable yet.

I thought Toad should get rocket shoes (this was pre-Brawl) to accentuate his speed and as a nod to his Mariokart performance and the Golden Mushroom item's burst of acceleration.

But I suppose Zamus beat him to the punch (er rocket-fueled kick).

If that were true, not only hype would happen, but my suspicions ever since seeing Ghirahim would have been correct.

2013 Moveset

Toad!

A quick grappler with powerful throws. Toad is fast, has good rolls, an average side step, and moves with decent to incredible knockback that lack high damage. His jumps are quick, but short (just like a toad). But with his powerful throws, Toad doesn't need his enemies to be sky in high in damage to take them out of the ring.

Ground Attacks

A: Closes eyes, leans back, and throws two quick slaps forward.
A, repeated: Closes eyes, leans back, throws two quick slaps forward, and then slaps in a blur-like fashion.

Dash A: Trips over feet, and rolls like a bowling ball knocking opponent's up.

Toward A: A quick drop-kick. Lands on back after the move, but gets up quickly. Comes out quick; decent knockback.

Up A: Jumps slightly upwards, character bounces off his mushroom hat. Good for juggling.

Down A: When crouched, puts one foot forward and slides a small distance. If the opponent has high damage in relation to their weight, they may trip over Toad and land on their back.

Toward Smash: Skids forward a little with his shoes and pushes his enemy as he screams like a girl. Hit opponent flies away in a forward trajectory. Good knockback, low damage.

Up Smash: Flips onto his head, spins while crunching up his body and then kicks hard upwards. High stun, decent knockback.

Smash Down: Toad quickly pulls out a POW block as he faces the screen does a
back-flip and then smashes the POW block onto the floor, sending a circular shockwave ripple across the floor near Toad and a circular shockwave. Charging up the Smash leads to a bigger POW block being ripped out of the ground. High vertical knockback if on the ground, a small push if airborne and in contact with the shockwave.

Specials

Up B: A magic carpet appears under Toad and he grabs the front edge. His face is a look of shock. He can freely travel in the air for three seconds. He can perform one air dodge while on his carpet.

Side B (Ground): Toad braces his feet, whirls his arms in a circle, and quickly reaches out. If he grabs the opponent, Toad automatically begins spinning with opponent in hands (like Mario's back throw). B can be mashed to in increase spinning speed. A is pressed to let go. Direction depends on position of opponent when A is pressed, distance throw depending on how fast the spinning.

Side B (Air): Toad whirls his arms in a circle and then reaches out. If the opponent is caught, Toad begins spinning the opponent using the opponent as a propeller to move from side to side (like DK's up B, except for whirling arms he is using his whirling opponent). Mashing B Makes Toad spins faster and move quicker. Pressing A makes his throw his opponent upwards.

Down B: Crouches low and starts flashing just like in Super Mario Brothers Two. Springs up while twirling arms at the side. Height of the jump depends on the charge. The top of his head is a hit-box Automatically jumps at end of charge. Cannot perform Up B, or down B until he hits the ground. But gets one regular jump and ability to attack.

B: Spores begin to flow from Toad's head. Running and jumping around leaves a wake of spores that quickly fade. Walking through the spores give damage to the enemy. Cannot attack in this condition. A press of A or B will end the flowing spores with slight lag before an attack can be performed.

Aerials:

Up A: Aerial headbutt, similar to DK's

Down A: Claps shoes together, points toes downward, and spins like a drill. First part hits downward, twirl does damage.

Back A: Turns around in a curled position and rapidly kicks five times. Last hit has decent knockback.

Forward A: Leans forward, so his whole body is parallel to the floor and pushes. Decent KB, low damage.

Neutral A: Faces screen, does a jig with his legs as his body rotates 360 degrees.

Throws:

A: Shin kicks.

Toward A: While holding Opponent's hands, lifts the enemy straight above him so the top of their heads are touching (like how he picks up enemies in SMB2). Can jump, move around, and then throw opponent like DK's forward throw.

Down A: Leaps on top of opponent's head and kicks off. Leave enemy briefly stunned with stars over head if their percentage is high enough, but propels Toad upwards.

Up A: Shot-puts (places enemy alongside a shoulder with one hand pushes away) the opponent in a forward moving arch

Back A: Flips the enemy so the opponent rotates 360 degrees in a cartoon blur slightly above the ground. Reaches into the blur and throws the opponent backwards.

Five Nights at Brash's. This time, it isn't a misleading title and the game is actually five days. All you do is sit there. No jumpscares. Just sitting. Donkey Kong visits sometimes.
That'd still be a misleading title.
It would need to be Five Days at Brash's. :awesome:

That makes one of us.
A character revolving around using quick-draw moves with a katana would be pretty different from the ones we have.

That's not...No.
They are using the same moveset! Of course they have zero gameplay difference.
A dedicated user of the katana would fight completely different than that.
Then that means a katana in of itself isn't worth making a new character for. Little Mac didn't make it because he's a boxer, remember? He got in because Sakurai thought up "ain't no air fighter."

Busy day.

Wait, Toad's the most popular Mario newcomer? When did this happen? I'm sure Paper Mario and Waluigi have done consistantly better in popularity polls of the past and Tumblr seems to really want to push up the Daisy. (#triggered)
Not to mention the cult of Geno supporters. (#actuallytriggered)

If this is true this is fantastic for us Toad fans who are quiet (but loyal) compared to other fanbases, but I have a feeling even if you combine all the votes for Captain Toad, regular Toad and say...I dunno Toadette, they still would struggle to best ol' Papes.
Never said any of that... Just see for yourself.

A Katana user would be so cool. And not just any Katana user, but a crazy awesome Samurai-Ninja hybrid that faces armies of ninja alone and battled an evil alien creature, because why not. Someone this cool sounding can only be one character, Takamaru! Still my most wanted character, and that's not going to change. I sure hope he'll have a better chance next Smash.

Has anyone ever played Capcom vs. SNK 2? One of my favorite characters in that game was Hibiki. That's how I picture Takamaru fighting like, just mixed in with all his other weapons as well. Of course, I'd be cool with Samurai Goroh and Lyn as well, but Takamaru will always be my favorite.

Good to receive clarification on what we know. That said have there been any Western composers who did work in this game? If not, then I can't see them getting David Wise to compose for Smash given that I doubt Retro was contacted about Tropical Freeze during Smash 4's development despite getting a Yoshi's Woolly World stage. My bets are on a new DK game.

I can't see David Wise working exclusively on Smash. I could see him doing a remix for a new DK game and said remix being added to Smash, or maybe he can do an extra track for Smash while working on a new DK game, but exclusively Smash I highly doubt.

This is a fascinating read! The details of "personality" and Pit's design notes are particularly interesting to me.

Thanks for translating it! You're doing the gods' work, my friend~

I'm kind of impressed that he was actually patient enough to reply to all of us and never did resort to flaming or anything. Detractors like him are a rare bunch.

Wait, did Patchouli throw Stalin into a gulag or something?
Well, I can identify myself with the characters I use for my avatars. Stalin isn't like that, so it began to feel awkward after a while.

He'll be back for Red October.

All composers to have worked in Smash thus far have been Japanese.

Smash Bros. 64 and Melee had all the music done by the sound team at HAL. Brawl and Smash 3DS/Wii U have a wide array of video game composers, with several of them being big names in the industry.

The team got the Street Fighter composer to remix the Ryu and Ken themes for Suzaku Castle, so it's not out of the question they'd enlist David Wise as well if need be.
Just a little correction, Yoko Shimomura (the SF2 composer) only remixed Ryu's theme. Plus, she has also done other remixes for this game as well, such as the Magicant remix. Ken's theme was remixed by Bandai Namco's sound team.

Once again, I appreciate the work you're doing.

I've already seen those before their publication, sure, but I'm really enjoying knowing more about the development of the Smash Bros. games. There's so much thought put into these games and lot of attention to details as well. Quite impressive.

That is utter nonsense. Sakurai described an aspect of the character. He in no way implied a causal relationship between that and its inclusion. The very idea is absurd, and it's the same as the idea that Wii Fit Trainer was included because no one expected her.

I'm really not confident of the fact that new characters in existing franchises will get DLC stages in the same way Ryu did.

Who knows, though, 1st party DLC newcomers is brand new territory so anything is possible.

Im literally working on transcribing Sakurai's Famitsu column on Little Mac right now. It'll probably be ready in 1-2 days :3
