This is the poll that Nintendo had for Melee, in some of the infancy of the internet with very little promotion. Just to show some interesting feelings.

Young Link and Zelda being less requested than CHOCOBO.

And here is the best I could find for Brawl.

And here we are, K. Rool standing as one of if not the single most requested newcomer world wide (mostly depending on how you think Ridley is doing or if he even should be counted).

If Sakurai said that and essentially were picked before the ballot due to having a firm grasp on their demand and popularity, and K. Rool just shine out in chance more than just about anyone in the compeition.

That's my opinion.

There are no such things as shoo-ins.

Chrom as a playable character not a Final Smash device Sakurai-San make it happen.

I searched up for results on the Brawl Smash Ballot thing, and that thread was the best information I could find.
I wasn't here for that speculation so I can't really say anything on the validity, but a mod back then stickied it so it seemed credible enough to list.

I think Black Mage would be a great choice. He's already been in a few Nintendo games. (Mario Hoops, Mario Sports Mix and a few ff games.) I think he'd fit in well with a magic based move set.

And besides, there is already a White Mag alt costume for Rosalina and Luma, meaning Nintendo is acknowledging their existence.

I think that's Fire Rosalina. Robin has the White Mage alt, and casts Arcfire like a White Mage.

Went from a whole 5 people wanting him (less than DORAEMON) to being 8th in Japan and now a top 20 at best.
Meanwhile K. Rool has only increased in demand and his series is on an up swing.

Yeah, but how can you possible equate Geno, a one-off character from a game not made by Nintendo, and the licensing forced the character to be owned by its developers, as opposed to the main antagonist of a long-running franchise whose most recent game was as recent as 2008, but regardless he still appeared in 4 as a trophy and is far, far more requested?

Whilst there's some genuine Geno fanatics, a lot of people leapt on the bandwagon after seeing him rank so high on the Brawl poll.

Exactly the same as Chorus Kids and Chrom.

When these characters didn't make it many of these bandwagon bandits left these fan groups leaving only the few genuine fans in tact.

I don't think that listing was in order of character popularity, but simply a listing of the characters Sakurai took interest in, publishing journal entries for those characters.

So Sakurai was at least passingly interested in K. Rool, but he wasn't above all those other characters, including Diddy.

I think this sort of thing happens all the time if the fans aren't good enough or if the character isn't appearing in games enough.
