Bomberman/Simon Belmont-bomberman because its bomberman and Simon Belmont because Castlevania along with Metroid helped define a genre of gaming
Dig Dug-more of a retro pick for namco but is more or less on the same level as konami's bomberman just not nearly as popular
Spyro/Crash-not the icons they used to be but they are still remembered for their games back in the day until Sony basically left them to their fates with Activision
Lara Croft-the only video game gal that can give Samus a run for her money (though samus>>>>>>>>>lara croft imo...jus sayin

Jill Valentine-An Icon of horror games as Resident Evil (along with Silent Hill) helped to define the survival horror genre, Horror games are unlikely to get any recognition in general given the more light hearted nature of smash...

Chun-Li-a fighting game icon in her own right along side her co-star Ryu...though you could pick and choose other SF characters such as Ken, Akuma, Cammy and M. Bison because of how big the series is...
Shantae/Quote-if we want to count the Indies then these two have more going for them than most others...though being Indie in general makes them less significant than most non-iconic characters in general due to their relative obscurity...
