Shulk? Ehh, he's cool, he'd be interesting, but I don't know if he's the most likely choice. Oh, Gematsu is a thing? SHULK HAS BEEN OBVIOUS THIS WHOLE TIME

Duck Hunt Dog? Are you kidding? He has no moveset potential and barely anyone wants him. OMG DHD IS MY FAV NEWCOMER

Dark Pit in Smash? That's dumb. Oh, Dark Pit got included? That's dumb.

Fun thing? I still don't care for any of those options (except Sonic and Mega Man). This is a bit of a generalization, but it works in many scenarios. In my case, my opinions haven't changed regardless of reveals, but a lot of people admittedly are sheep in the sense that they bash something they don't think is going to happen or don't like, then love it once its in just so they're in on it and not actually because they wanted it to happen in the first place.


At the same time... well, Chrom isn't really the case. Chrom was an extremely common suggestion prior to Gematsu, and there was a following of people who felt Chrom was boring and would prefer another character, usually Robin. Of course, its possible I missed people claiming Chrom was boring then changing their minds later.

I mean, in some of those cases, it's different people saying different things, but other times, it's people backtracking at the speed of light so they're not ridiculed for stupid things they've said.

Stuff like "Little Mac has no chance because he only punches" or "Pac-Man has no chance because Sakurai said Namco wouldn't get any favors [because gaming's most recognizable figure and a moderately big request would only ever be added as a favor]."

Of course, if nothing happens to contradict those stupid statements, they're held up as objective truth. Certain purple space dragons know that better than anyone.

This. A lot of people saying different things. It IS true that many people were sheep and backtracked on their opinions after reveals, though. In fact, I'd argue many of the characters above had that situation. The only exception being Chrom; I think that one is completely out of place because I distinctly remember two factions on the Chrom debate.


As for Shulk, long before the leak and long before I joined Smashboards I kept hearing the name Shulk pop up quite a bit. I had no idea where he came from, but I did see that name spring up a LOT in the first few months of 2014.

Pretty much this. Drives me crazy the lengths that people go to avoid being wrong. What's so bad about being wrong? I was totally wrong about Mewtwo being a lock on the initial roster, and getting a second DK character.

It's fairly normal. When people don't give something much thought, they don't care. But once they think hard on something and consider a number of things, their opinions change.

However, there's changing an opinion based on research/actually having reasons, and then there's being a sheep and being one with the herd. With those examples you posted, I fell in love with each choice after seeing what they could do. Other people...well, other people just might hop on the bandwagon to do so.

I think it's more them having something tangible to bring about that thought rather then simply thinking harder. When people think harder without something external to sway them its often the case they just wind up defending their original stance more belligerently. It's definitely the minority who will shift their opinions without a bandwagon, leak, or legitimate reveal.

You're not going far enough back on the timeline. In earlier speculation (which was still after Awakening released) the split was much more evident. Eventually Chrom found support because he was seen as the likely choice, and then he found popularity primarily when people thought he was all but confirmed. And of course there are exceptions, but I'm not focusing on what the minority felt.

In my defense, when I detested Pac-Man, I was referring to this mess:

A creep that's only notable for a couple of unremarkable games and a god-awful cartoon didn't deserve to even be mentioned in the same breath as Smash Bros.

Then someone suggested it would be classic Pac-Man featuring a Namco-mancer moveset.
And I was completely on board with that.

Hell, it's why there's so much hysteria about every remotely plausibly leak that gets farted out (or meticulously designed over the course of like a month, in Rayman's case). People want opportunities to be on a 'winning side,' and when they are, they want to boast.

It really just proves how people are opposed or reluctant towards a character, especially third parties, up until they think that character is actually going to be included.

Personally I don't have anything against Rayman, he'd be an ok addition, but I have no affinity for him either.

I thought Rayman was not likely before the "leak" (ironically, I had mentioned something about my position the day before), was skeptical of the "leak" because Rayman was on it though was willing to admit I was wrong about Rayman if it was confirmed to be true, and now that the "leak" was confirmed to be fake, I still don't think Rayman is likely.

I only knew of the Chorus Kids before the Gematsu Leak through Flipnote Hatena on Nintendo DSI. They where a pretty popular meme there. Of course I didn't really know their names or where they came from and all as I wasn't too familiar with the Rhythm Heaven series back then.

I must admit that I once disliked clones, though said dislike diminished when Brawl's Forbidden 7 were found out and all clones from Melee would've possibly returned if it weren't for time constraints (except Young Link, but Toon Link exists anyway).

I had the idea of Dr. Mario retaining his moveset from Melee, while Mario had FLUDD, which made me happy to see it happen in Smash 4.

Then, there's the fact of how I learned more about game development and getting some experience in programming, which made me realize that clones weren't harmful to the development of a game.

Finally, Dark Pit and Lucina in Smash 4. Two of my favorite characters in KIU and FEA? In Smash? I don't give a **** about them being clones, the hype train has no brakes.

About Rayman, I was surprised to see such a well-done fake and if it were an actual leak, I'd be shocked by the addition. I don't think this changed anything regarding his inclusion, though. Personally, I don't care much about Rayman, but the prospect of more DLC besides Mewtwo was pretty good anyway.

I think Rayman is slightly more likely, and the only reason I say that is Ubisoft's reaction to it. That part really caught me off guard. Why would Ubisoft have a statement to make about it? That makes no sense.


Apart from this I see Rayman as having absolute minimal chances of being in the game. Though, I won't say I feel he's the second most likely third-party. Rather I think he's the mostly based on that Ubisoft tidbit. I suspect others are referring to Snake as #1, but I legitimately see almost no chance of Snake being added to Smash again precisely BECAUSE he wasn't brought back from Brawl. That tells me Nintendo just doesn't want to have anything to do with him (at least in Smash) anymore, especially considering how Snake was the first ever third-party character in Smash.

'course I don't really think third-parties will be DLC anyway. We'd probably get Young Link added before that. (inb4 Rayman IS added as DLC ).

No, K. Rool and Dixie have about the same number of games. And if you're thinking of major roles, K. Rool has more of those as well, being the main antagonist in 9 DK games (DKC 1-3, DKL 1-3, DK64, DK: King of Swing, DK: Jungle Climber), while Dixie is the main protagonist of two (DKC3 and DKL3). In the pegboard games, she's only a minor character who doesn't do anything story-wise.

Dixie has more playability, but except in DKC3 and DKL3, K. Rool always has larger roles up until the recent titles where he was left out for now, and will likely appear in the next main game. Overall, K. Rool wins on all points except recency, which may not even be a problem anymore. If fact, if he's set to return in the near future (which is likely based on a variety of DK-related games that could be in development), K. Rool would be by far the better DLC character overall.


Dixie's grand return was Tropical Freeze, that would've been the ideal time for Dixie to be added. K. Rool's potential for appearing in the future, as well as his overall popularity and importance, sets him up higher overall. Both are VERY close in importance-wise to the series, but K. Rool wins every point except recency, which likely won't be a problem in the near future.

To be honest, I would have loved Professor Layton to have been in S4 xD He would just be such a unique character, in the way he would have to fight and his specials. Just imagine a high ranking tournament match, and Layton just jumps in the ring and starts smacking Mario round the face with his hat. Sakurai, DLC pls ;;-;;

I don't know, Rosalina, Palutena, Pac-man, Shulk which were on my wishlist are all in Smash bros, I really want the story cutscenes cuz I really want to know how the new characters interact with the characters... and Ice Climbers back.

I wish. That's easily the best-case scenario, and I still believe that if ANY franchise were to get two characters as DLC, DK is the #1 for that scenario. I love both Dixie Kong and King K. Rool and both deserve to be playable. I even prefer Dixie to K. Rool in-franchise, but to represent the franchise in Smash I prefer K. Rool over Dixie by a long shot. But both are fully deserving of it.

In all seriousness, Ghirahim.

I wanted him intensely the entire time Smash 4 was in development. All the way back in 2012 when they announced the game, the only character I wanted in was Ghirahim.
Of course, back them I imagined the Zelda characters would a Skyward Sword makeover - making him quite likely. However, from the moment Smash 4 was revealed and the characters still took after Twilight Princess, my hope for Ghirahim slowly began to dwindle.
All culminating with his disconfirmation during the ESRB leak.
I will never forget this disappointment.

Eh...that's not true.

Miyamoto helped with the development of Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes on the Gamecube, there was a Limited/Special Edition 3DS for Snake Eater, and (while just PR) Iwata told Sakurai he liked what he did with the characters he brought in from other companies in Brawl, so Snake and Sonic.

Additionally, Snake has a Smash fanbase now. There are fans that want him, and he's certainly a video gaming legend. Compared to almost any other 3rd party character brought up, Snake makes the most sense. Now, if he never showed up in Brawl, I wouldn't be supporting him either (because I probably would have never played the series after playing as him in Brawl). However, Snake in Smash had a large impact on my gaming career. I've played through the entire series. But that's besides the point.

Snake has everything any 3rd party character needs. Part of the charm of a 3rd Party character is that they aren't a part of the Nintendo universe, something that Sakurai has said in a way. Paraphrasing, he basically said something about how it can be tough to fit characters into Smash Bros. when they are from different companies. If i felt like getting the quote, I would, but I just got up and am feeling lazy. Forgive me .

Anyway, unique gameplay, legendary status, is basically unique in himself based on who he is... Basically, I'm trying to argue that he's a good choice. But i'm basing a lot of that on him being a part of Smash Bros already. There's no GOOD reason to not bring him back in my opinion.

I also think the only reason he isn't back is because Sakurai and Kojima never talked. I think there's a chance Snake can be brought back, especially if fans show their demand.

I'm not a fan of Snake. As far as I'm concerned, he is not a gaming legend, and no one can really contest this. His game series is the legend, not him as a character.
If he is a character, then Lara Croft might as well be in the game.

Well they've locked themselves into doing the announcement now. They can't just say they're going to do one and then back out, it looks too fishy and it's disrespectful to their consumers.

I personally think that Ubisoft were just as fooled as the rest of us and wanted to contact Nintendo about a potential breach of copyright before making any bold statements. Giving themselves until Tuesday would allow them to be certain they could contact who they needed to on Monday, since the businesses would both be running in full on a weekday, and then prepare a statement for Tuesday as to what was going on.

Ubisoft never said they were doing an announcement.
Screwattack, the guy who lied to us about a Nintendo announcement at Apex, is the one who said it.

Which means, unlikely to have ever been true.

TBH, my opinions changed a lot for some characters (Shulk, Villager, and Little Mac) when the game was released though I still ended up hating a good number of characters (Wii Fit Trainer, Rosalina, and Greninja) post-release.

Oh, also you need to open up the roster application and open up one of the taps in the top left corner and there should be a button that says something along the lines of "add new fighter icons".
