Wow we were having a debate on JRPG characters?

Although I would agree with Blue (woah!), Shulk was the only JRPG (which is not Pokemon) character introduced in Smash 4.

Fire Emblem does not count.

Golden Sun would have counted.

Furthermore, why aren't there any ERPGs (European Role Playing Games)? It's just a label.

The only major distinction is that RPGs in general are complex in nature, and thus can vary greatly between one game and another. Thus comes in the "Japan" part, cultural differences often lead to differences in how a game is made, as Jones mentioned, JRPGs tend to be more story and character driven while western RPGs tend to give you more freedom, this is purely a cultural difference. I could make an RPG just like he described, but it would be an RPG, because it wasn't made in Japan. Similarly, EarthBound for example is more akin to a western RPG (being able to name the characters, at least) but is still a JRPG, again, because it was made in Japan. Platformers on the other hand, are running and jumping. Nothing much to change between cultures there.
The divide goes back to PC vs. Console gaming in the late 80s early 90s, when most PC games where made by Western developers. The two genre's had similar roots but developed in very different ways, and when both met on an even battlefield (when the first Xbox hit the market place and more Western devs starting making game for consoles) the WRPG vs JRPG labels started being used more heavily to describe the type of game experience you could expect to find.

Really, you can have JRPGs being developed by Western Studios and WRPGs made by Japanese studios now, which makes things really confusing.

And why, pray tell, does Fire Emblem not count?

I think the real question here is, why does anybody care what is considered a JRPG? This has nothing to do with characters really.

This is for Smash Bros. Talk about Smash Bros.

True. A genre has no effect on a character's chances.

To find out if Sakurai's Miiverse comment about Shulk had anything to do with the genre he was from.
Nah, I personally think it is because Shulk is from a Japan-only game (well, it was intended to be Japan-only in 2010)... especially from an unestablished series (it is too new)... and Xenoblade Chronicles came to the West on April 2012 (right after Sakurai was done with Uprising) so it was fresh in Sakurai's mind when he was beginning to work on Smash. Xenoblade Chronicles came first and the other two Operation Rainfall JRPG games came too late.

EarthBound was at least released in the West plus it probably had HAL bias (since HAL made Mother, Kirby, and Smash games) and Fire Emblem was already a long running series even though it was Japan-only.

Still not a part of Xenogears or Xenosaga. The name doesn't even make much sense otherwise, it is mostly for tribute.

I haven't played any of the original Xeno games though >.<

To be fair, I'm sure the games would all have the same title if they were all made by the same Publisher. All the different Xeno games tie in to each other thematically and it's not their fault that Monolithsoft took so long to find a stable home.

Different subject, but under careful analysis, I have come to the conclusion that the models of Fox and Falco on the Orbital Gate and Lylat Cruise (Wii U) stages are of their Brawl models as opposed to their Smash Wii U models.

Makes it even more odd that Wolf doesn't use his and instead uses his Assault model....

Not to mention Xenoblade X....

That's an upcoming game for the Wii U. Shulk can represent a well-received game and promote X.

Are you talking about their models in the Star Fox codecs or their playable models in those two stages?

If there is a DLC announcement, it's either going to be another cut veteran (Roy, Young Link, Pichu, Ice Climbers, Wolf, Lucas, Squirtle, or Ivysaur), or someone completely out of left field none of us could have expected.

Wow didn't notice that, this is interesting. What's your theory on that?

That it makes the situation even bleaker than I thought.

It's bad enough that the Lylat Cruise codecs were updated to the Orbital Gate style with Wolf using his Assault model rather than his Smash-original design, but to see that Fox and Falco aren't even using their models from this game and instead using their Brawl models, while Wolf isn't doing the same to match them when the option is present? Kind of adds up to my theory that Wolf was (unfortunately) decided against rather early.

Then why? If Sakurai said he didn't want to vut alot of characters, why cut someone like Wolf early on? Sanke's understandable, and to some extent Squirtle and Ivysaur, and if you push it Gematsu claimed Lucas was cut. Ice Climbers were cut late in development... Or the theory could be turned around, since Wolf's model is different, it could signify a late cut, to hide Wolf's smash look. (Every other character uses an HD version of their brawl look.) I don't think it takes that long to make a model like that, plus they probably did it in the same time it took to remove Ice Climbers, plus Wolf will be in the new Star Fox game, He was a highly requested pre melee character, so why cut him?
There is literally no good reason why Wolf can't come back as DLC. Even if he's the only other one besides Mewtwo. Mewtwo and Wolf at a borderline minimum should be the bare minimum for character DLC, that way all the antagonistic veteran villains come back. Just asking for Wolf after Mewtwo isn't alot if he was a late cut, most of his data will already be there, and even if he was an early cut( which I HIGHLY doubt, but if true, will have someone smack Sakurai across the face for that decision) he can still port some data from brawl. If Wolf was a late cut, then he pretty much has to be DLC, with all that work done, it should be pretty easy to finish him up.

Question!

If we get a Direct this month, who would you think the DLC character announcement will be?
Nobody.
We were already told Mewtwo is it for right now. We could only get an update on Mewtwo's progress, but I find it more likely that we would first see gameplay of him around late january / february. For something so soon, maybe an image or two if we're lucky.

But if we get anything, it's going to be a small update on Mewtwo. I expect no Smash news past him until E3 (and that is only if DLC continues to be a thing).

Wolf, he's the last villainous veteran we need, and since he's going to be in the new Star Fox game, Sakurai would be a fool to exclude him, Wolf can be free DLC.

Free DLC
cut Veterans
(Wolf,Lucas)
patches

Free DLC if you own both versions Mewtwo

Paid DLC stages other extra stuff costumes

I just made your life easier Sakurai.
