Wouldn't :4ness: count as a JRPG character since, unless I'm incorrect, the J just stands for 'Japanese'?
The J does indeed stand for Japanese, but apparently there's some secret definition that only the cult of people with over 10,000 messages are allowed to be told.

It's as easy as looking at Wikipedia. :U
Pokemon and Earthbound are RPGs.
Fire Emblem is a Strategy RPG.
No, I'm pretty sure at least Pokemon and Earthbound are JRPGs. Especially if Dragon Quest is considered one because Earthbound has a similar format to it.

Also, Xenoblade is an Action roleplaying game. A JRPG does not = Action roleplaying, but action roleplaying can be a part of a JRPG.

All these series: Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Earthbound, Xenoblade, are JRPGs because they were made in japan.

I don't mean like that, I knew about what it meant.
Like what's a JRPG about in general?
I heard it's very similar to many of the MMORPGs like FusionFall.
JRPG literally has nothing else about it besides being from Japan. Thats it. Nothing else. You can have an american made game play like Pokemon, Earthbound, or Xenoblade and it would still just be a RPG.

A JRPG is literally just an RPG, made in Japan. The only "distinction" is made by cultural differences.

You know that Wikipedia isn't the most reliable of sources, right?

I could go on there and type in whatever I feel like.
Don't even start.
Wikipedia is heavily policed; yes, you can type whatever you want, but if it's blatantly wrong it will quickly be reverted.

I thought it had a different meaning seeing how people commonly regarded Xenoblade as the best JRPG of the generation, I guess I heard wrong.
Because it's an RPG, made in Japan. If people are calling it the best JRPG, then they are calling it the best RPG from Japan.
Don't even start.

You really shouldn't trust anything you read on the internet. I'm not starting anything, Wikipedia just isn't good.
Liked for House. And the message. But mostly House.
So..... what is the gameplay differences between RPG games and JRPG games?
The same as whatever differences there are between one RPG and another. Again, JRPG is literally RPG with "hey, this was made in Japan!" slapped on the front. It's like calling a shooter made in Japan "JFPS." Nothing more.

I would normally say that this isn't relevant to character discussion necessarily. But this is the definition.

A JRPG is a role playing game in which most cases, you cannot change major parts of the main characters such as name or appearance, with an often linear plot/storyline that takes on a worldly theme.

That's an amalgamation of what I've found from other peeps on the internet.

ALSO MADE IN JAPAN

Actually...why IS it only RPGs that get labelled with the J? A platformer is a platformer, a first person shooter is a first person shooter, but RPGs for some reason get Japan slapped on the front.

I think it's because people noticed that JRPGs and W(estern)RPGs tended to have different trends in playstyle and also people who play video games are really weird.

Furthermore, why aren't there any ERPGs (European Role Playing Games)? It's just a label.

The only major distinction is that RPGs in general are complex in nature, and thus can vary greatly between one game and another. Thus comes in the "Japan" part, cultural differences often lead to differences in how a game is made, as Jones mentioned, JRPGs tend to be more story and character driven while western RPGs tend to give you more freedom, this is purely a cultural difference. I could make an RPG just like he described, but it would be an RPG, because it wasn't made in Japan. Similarly, EarthBound for example is more akin to a western RPG (being able to name the characters, at least) but is still a JRPG, again, because it was made in Japan. Platformers on the other hand, are running and jumping. Nothing much to change between cultures there.

Like 75% of people's internal definition of JRPG is related to how spiky the protagonist's hair is.

Oh my ****ing... This argument is ridiculous!

JRPG = Japanese Role Playing Game = Role playing game made in Japan

Is this really hard to understand? Seriously, it's like people don't even know how to read...

By definition, all the Pokémon and EarthBound characters are JRPG characters.

And yes, usually JRPGs tend to be more linear when it comes to storytelling than WRPGs. Overall cultural differences that are prevalent in each region. Doesn't mean there aren't exceptions. There are Japanese RPGs that are more similar to Western RPGs and vice versa.

Fire Emblem is a SRPG (Strategy RPG), which has a different form of gameplay compared to normal RPGs. It also has some typical JRPG characteristics such as linearity in storytelling.

All of this to say that Shulk isn't the first JRPG character in Smash. JRPG characters have been in Smash since the series debut, given how Pikachu, Jigglypuff and Ness were playable there.

Pokémon and EarthBound are JRPG series and share a lot of conventions commonly associated with RPGs from Japan.

Oh boy, the definition of JRPG, one of my favorite gaming forum arguments /s

Back to topics that are actually relevant to anything - I agree with Scoliosis Jones that if you think a character like Wonder-Red would be cool, ****ing say something about it. Sales don't mean anything if there's significant fan demand - Marth, Shulk, and arguably Mega Man got in 99% due to fan demand (from Japan especially in the former two cases), and if enough people say they want Wonder-Red in Nintendo's gonna have to listen eventually.

The Wonderful 101 is the best game I've played on Wii U since I got it like a month ago. It absolutely deserves representation.

I'd say I would like Ninten for an alt, or a full-fledged character. Lucas, the more I think of him, the more likely he seems. I used to be pessimistic about his chances, but now I'm optimistic. But I would accept Paula or Giygas in his place/as alts. But Lucas has the best chance out of all of them. Do I even need to mention Wolf, even though I would take Lucas, Ninten, Paula, or Giygas over him?

I knew what the name was obviously, I'm not dumb. :glare:

I was just wondering if being the first action roleplaying RPG character had anything to do with Sakurai's Miiverse comment about "a character who usually doesn't appear in the Smash Bros. series."

The way I've always heard is that JRPG's traditionally consist of a main character that cannot be customized, but can sometimes be named, and consist of mostly linear gameplay and a set of party members that cannot be traded out. Western RPG's consist of a fully customizable character Nonlinear player progression and most the time don't consist of unexchangable party characters. So compare FFXIII with Skyrim. That's usually the difference. Usually.

In the case of "if you think a character would be cool, say something about it"...

There's barely any love for Rayman around here. The guy's got three bloody trophies!

He's one of the most unique characters possible, he has no limbs! Imagine a long ranged fist fighter. He could punch you from across the stage and his attacks couldn't be reflected because they aren't projectiles. There's so many ways that Rayman could be made, so many abilities, so many powerups, so much potential! They wouldn't have trouble adding him since he's already there.

Bias aside (towards UbiSoft or for another third party) what does everyone think about Rayman as a fighter?

I loved the original PSX Rayman when I was a kid, if he were added I'd definitely buy him out of nostalgia alone. I'd double buy it if Band Land were a stage.

Would buy if only for stage ideas I have.

Rayman himself would be super fun too.

JRPGs - FInal Fantasies, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Xenogears-Xenosaga, Skies of Arcadia, Kingdom Hearts, super Mario rpg, the tales of franchise. Japanese RPGs with limited character customization where your party and it's members are selected for the plot and their use and the time you can use them is decided by the plot sometimes with variables or options. A direct player character is not necessary (Final Fantasies), is often mute (Chrono Trigger, Earthbound) or so obvious that other characters are of minimal importance at best (Kingdom Hearts). And most importantly, these games come from Japan. They often have anime archtypal characters, plots filled with tropes, tiny pretty boy characters with big big big swords.

RPGs - American RPGs take more from years of American Tabletop RPGs and you get games in the traditions of Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights. Leading to the current trend of Knights of the old republic and mass effect.

Action RPGs keep the leveling or some similar character progression over a story arc, but have less menu based attacking as they're not paying attention to tabletop rpg like battle systems creating games like Zelda, kingdom hearts, and mass effect.

Currently point and click adventure games are starting to push rpg elements as well and have done so since games like shenmue, but are reaching more mainstream attention as they even further near RPGs in games like the wolf among us, the walking dead, and the upcoming game of thrones.

MMORPGs are games that started with ultimate online, moved to Everquest, and got really well known with world of warcraft. Many others have appeared since. Literally countless. Multiple Man Online RPG, where servers full of people across the world play.

Strategy RPGs go further away from the parties of cover and instead have unit types and have you commanding over your army. Like fire emblem, advance wars, project x zone, disgaea, phantom brave, and many others.

I hope these examples helped.

Sometimes a forgot that Rayman exists because the Rabbids are more popular XD

But yeah, Rayman would be unique and cool, but Bomberman would be better...or Belmont.

Rabbids are more popular? What?
More well known, maybe, but definitely not more popular.

Anyway, I'd like Rayman, but I honestly think Snake is more likely, and MAYBE Bayonetta.

I was thinking that if Sakurai isn't doing Smash 5, maybe I would like to see something different with Smash 5... well, maybe not Smash 5 but a Smash spin-off featuring third-party characters with Nintendo ties...?
