Yeah, But those are 1st Party titles and emulation or licensing problems wasn't holding them back, While Star Fox 2 certainly is a nice surprise the game was always finished, Nintendo just didn't decided to release it by choice because of the N64's anticipating release back then, Nintendo could of easily reach in their back pocket and rerelease Star Fox and Yoshi without any problems too since they own those IP's ,But for whatever reason never did kind of like how they took forever to rerelease any N64 titles during the Wii era and barely any on the Wii U , Nintendo clearly wanted all of their major 1st Party franchise's represented in the SNES Classic, That's why Mario has Super Mario World, Donkey Kong has Donkey Kong Country, Metroid has Super Metroid and etc, It was only natural that they were going to represent Star Fox which debut in that era and Yoshi's island which is the sequel to the highest selling game of their system.FX chip games never came out on any version of VC. Not only did the SNES classic get SF1 & YI, but the never released SF2. That's hardly what I'd call playing it safe.
As for the N64, Nintendo and Rareware did all the heavy lifting during that era with very little major 3rd Party support, With the inevitable release of the N64 Classic, No doubt that Nintendo is going to go with the usual route of like the SNES and have most of all their major franchises represented with at least 1 game each and that's expected and "Playing it Safe" since they can easily just rerelease all the 1st Party stuff on the Classic with no problem, If they really wanted to go all out, turn some heads and represent the N64 era as a whole they would go through the trouble of striking a deal with Microsoft and putting Rareware games on the N64 Classic, I can understand not snagging Goldeneye 007 since it's a licensing nightmare, But I don't see why they couldn't land Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Diddy Kong Racing and to lesser extent Perfect Dark as a replacement for Goldneye 007, Without a doubt it's very possible to release an N64 Classic without any Rareware games, Slap Mario on the front of the box with a price tag and call it a day, But that would be taking the easy way out and resulting with a neutered, decimated and less memorable lineup without them.
