The way I see it, knowing/learning to account for items is part of the game. Hardcore competitive rules are pretty boring, imo.
Eh, I think when it comes to an actual competition, sometimes items can interfere a little bit too much, not to mention the entire thing about certain characters being favored depending on the stage. That said, I hope these invitationals can bring attention to Sakurai and the team about the potential of competitive Smash, if anything.
The best of both worlds, to me, is if Nintendo started giving some support to the competitive community while also promoting these for the more casual crowd... though I know the chances of that are really slim.
Nevertheless, we now have confirmation about at least one character at E3. I still think it could be more than one, especially because I don't see another Smash Direct happening this soon, with so many first party games on the second semester like AC, FE, Luigi and Pokémon.
