Ball Pit

My friends and I were talking about a prospective idea for a horror movie. Basically, there is an old man who works at a Chuk-E-Cheese's and one night he came and built a trap door at the bottom of a ball pit which leads to a torture chamber. I'm not going to go into the details, but basically during "rush hour" when a lot of kids are in the ball pit, he opens up the trap door and drags children into the torture chamber.

Would this idea appeal to anybody? Opinions would be nice and any suggestions for improvement would be appreciated.

That movie would be rated Adult Only. There is no way that would ever be in the movie theaters. This is a country where Resident Evil had to change a 12 year old prince into a 30 year old ****** because it is wrong to hurt children. Video games have stricter regulations, but there is still no way that would ever get put in a movie theather unless it was a film festival or a Grind House night.

Good point, I kinda blocked out the whole "kid" part (probably because my mind didn't even want to go there). Yeah, it wouldn't at all appeal to most anyone, try a different age range.

This is just a bit too messed up. It's like Saw with children. The kinds of people this movie would appeal to... I don't even want to think about who would enjoy watching kids be tortured to death.

On the more pragmatic side, I can't imagine that this movie would be anything remotely approaching profitable, and selling it online certainly won't make things easier. And why wouldn't people notice the whirlpool of children and plastic being sucked into the ball pit?

I'd rather enjoy watching it.
Same.
I'd camp out if liam aiken stared in this movie.

movies aim towards shock value, so chances are that the saw-market already has been milked dry, and they need a new aspect to shock themselves.
I think this could be a reality and would not get shut down.

See, now I don't want to think about either of you. :D

But seriously, I don't really see why movies should go for shock value. I don't see the appeal of the torture porn that is most of the most mainstream horror genre these days. But there is no way any major studio would ever, ever back this movie. The basic concept is just sick, and the type of movie isn't exactly the best to treat the subject matter tastefully. So it would have to be indie. And then what theaters would show this? Not gonna happen.

All of the balls would fall into the pit; people would notice. It sounds like an interesting concept but the logistics don't work out too well. Although if you wanted to make it over-the-top outrageous then throw logic to the wind and go for it.

if the trap door is pulled in a horizontal angle, and there is a buffer room full of balls also that is about 6ft by 6ft you can use that to keep the ball level in the pit even

or just have a ball output to keep the top layer at an equal level, if the trap door is smaller, there shouldn't be that many balls escaping into the room so long as it is done fast.

Some kind of cloth like material could be draped over it, keeping the balls from sinking in but if a kid steps on it, they could fall through and the person at the bottom could quickly shut a horizontal closing style trap door.

either way, liam aiken is the star or i wont watch it

I like your ideas. But I would assume that the ball pit would be pretty deep and wide so nobody would really notice if 20 balls went missing. And since the guy works at the place, he could just put them back later.

This is exactly why I say it would be only sold on the internet. I'm not if you realize how many people on the internet would buy this movie, assuming it's done to their liking.

If the torture idea wouldn't work(I still think it would) then it would definitely involve children, pain, and a ball pit. My friends and I were talking about how people would put needles and syringes containing who knows what into ball pits, so it would contain that at the very least.

This idea is disturbing. You're ruining my memories of Chuk-E-Cheese.

There can't be anything good in a ballpit. The only thing your leaving with is AIDS or Anthrax.

I really don't think that the premise you described could be stretched out into a feature length film. Part of an overall larger plot, maybe, but not as a standalone piece. You might want to consider this as a short. As soon as a parent notices a child is missing they would freak out and the establishment would be shut down/heavily investigated (starting point for a longer film, maybe? Guy does that, gets a taste for it, continues on adults outside of Chuck-E-Cheese's? In this scenario the torture could be implied).

The topic of torturing and killing children is very taboo. Honestly, you just can't do it. Especially at a major chain like Chuck-E-Cheese's. They would never let you make that film. Besides, those torture types of movies aren't really "scary," just cringe inducing. Unless that's really what you're going for, then you might want to consider a simple kidnapping.

As was said before, no studio would back this. While it is possible to make a film like this independently, distribution through the internet wouldn't be your best option, IMO. You would probably want to try several film festivals first.

Overall, not a bad idea, just misguided. Keep on working on it and you'll come up with something good.

This man is clearly speaking from experience. He clearly is an expert in the field of ball pit traps. I'm calling the police.

Well done original poster. Your fabricated story of a film plot you came up with has succeeded in revealing the true identity of the mysterious Chuck E Cheese Child Catcher.

some places like the Discovery Zone had lots of tubes and mazes of tubes, that led to various enclosed ball pits that had small plastic windows. something like that would prevent the parents from seeing in. that could help too. :p
