Sup NYS. This thread is for anyone that is not or does not consider themselves part of the NYC Smash scene. I'm not that sure of who exactly consists of this, but names that come to mind would be Nintendude, Niko, OTG, Tuna and the rest of TFS, Kwan, anyone from Buffalo, PC, and anyone else who I can't think of.

I think about this a lot, and the more and more I think, the better of an idea it seems.

We should have a Power Ranking for the ENTIRETY of NYS outside of the NYC smash scene. We have enough good players at this point where it would not only be possible, but it would also serve the true purpose (imo) that a Power Ranking System is supposed to serve: Getting people motivated to travel to tournies, and improve.

I have a lot of pride in everything I do, especially Smash. I've lost to Nintendude and Niko in the past and have yet to beat them, so as far as I'm concerned I can't call myself the best outside of NYC, and that's killing me. With a Power Ranking System, we can rightfully rank all of the Smashers outside of NYC that are worthy and capable of placing high at regional/national tournaments, which there are players that do that.

I also believe this will be a HUGE help in preserving the Melee scene, especially in NYS. The region I am from, WNY, has a bunch of people who play DAILY and are getting better and better and can't wait to attend OOS tournies. Who knows how many people there are like that in other parts of NYS. Think about it:

A region has 5-10 low level players who play every weekend, or a few times a week trying to get better. How long will they stay motivated if they think they're playing a stale, dying game, as opposed to being able to have something to strive towards? (top 10 Power Ranking in NYS.)

This was never possible in the past due to lack of good players outside of NYC, but I think it's not only a very feasible idea now, but an idea that should be pursued for the sake of the NY community, and all of the players who have put in a lot of work and are good enough and should be repped via a power ranking system.

Last year in NYS, we saw tournaments in between NYC and WNY popping up frequently, and there are 2 more coming up quick: BEST in Troy, and AXS in Syracuse. I think people would be a lot more motivated to attend these tournaments (which in turn keeps the community alive) if they have a chance to be on a new Power Rankings, and the tournies will be much more hype as well, which, as far as I'm concerned, is the "magic" of Melee and what has kept me playing for so long.

That being said, I'm a little fuzzy on who all of these players would be. I know TFS is close to NYC but idk if they consider themselves NYC or not. Either way, I think we should discuss this idea and see if we can make something happen.

Seems kinda weird when westchester and such are way closer to nyc then upstate ny. Hell when I'm home in yonkers it's literally a 5 min drive before we enter nyc.

It'd def be cool if we get some of them to come to upstate tho, esp if it attracts toronto ppl

Well tourneys like Best are actually closer to NYC than Rochester. And rochester is sending a couple cars of people, it would be nice if Some NYC/NYC suburbanites showed up too. It would be cool if the whole state could get together enough to make an accurate PR that includes everyone.

Word. Well, they've come to tournies halfway in between NYC and Upstate tho before, so I'm saying let's make something out of it.

I have my car now too, so when I get my license on Halloween I'll be able to attend Cuse and Albany smashfests. **** it, I'm down to drive to whoever in NYS wants to play, even if it's for a fest.

While this is an interesting idea, I for one have no real interest in partaking in it. TFS/FNNNA/whatever you want to call our crew, actively plays with people from NYC and attends the same tournaments that those players attend. I personally live 5 minutes from the Bronx, and 10-15 from Jman, Alu, DJ, etc etc. I for one definitely consider myself to be a part of the Tristate/NYC scene and would most likely be ranked in a PR for this region right now.

This is not to take away from you guys, I totally respect the fact that NYS is pushing hard to get out there. I just don't feel right being ranked/included in some PR when we've only encountered one another once before, and realistically a choice between a 3 hour drive to Albany, or a 30 minute drive to No Johns or Sudden Death (with bigger turn outs and better players) is no choice at all. On top of that, the only person who would most likely be ranked in NYS from actual upstate NY would be you Jesse (and maybe Kwan? tho he is really really inactive). Especially since Tuna is in Manhattan now, we really have no real reason to travel that far.

I hate to say it, but if you guys are really serious about this you have to come down here and beat us a number of times.

Once again, our regions are more or less separate. Some of you live over 6 hours away. You realize that Washington DC is closer for us than you right?

Edit:

Alright, so just for the sake of argument, here is a list of players from Westchester who would be on this list (not including our entire crew since a lot of our players are from NYC/other areas).

Me
PC
Niko
Tuna
Nintendude
PC Kip (absolute monster and completely underground. Takes sets off myself, Niko and PC regularly).
Sol
T. Webb
Phish it (pretty inactive tbh)
Hazzard (lives in Mt. Vernon, which borders the bronx, but is technically Westchester/"upstate")
Skinhoff (I'm gonna stop here because the list drops off considerably after this).

Just saying, besides Jesse, who the **** even plays upstate?

Back in like 2008 we actually had top-10 NYS power rankings. It may have excluded WNY but I'm not sure. I also forget the order but PC, Kip, Sol, Ky, a Peach player (Reject I think?), and myself were all on it.

Anyway, I think that Westchester is effectively part of NYC in terms of Smash. After all, that's what the term "Tristate" is supposed to mean - NYC and the surrounding metropolitan area.

Max- Thanks for the detailed post man, and you too Mike.

Alright, I guess it's not as feasible as I thought. I just want more hype for the rest of NYS, but I guess I'll just scrap this idea for now

thanks guys

yo who does pc kip play? sounds ridiculuos

I think the best way to really promote the upstate Smash scene is to develop intercity rivalries. Like, Syracuse vs. Rochester vs. Buffalo vs. Ithaca or something like that. It seems like every city has a small pocket of players. I'm not sure of the best way to do this though, and also it kind of excludes people not from the cities.

Sorry Jesse. You guys need to travel, it's that simple. My offer to house you still stands for whenever you want to come down, and if I can't do it personally I can point you in the direction of someone who can.

Kip uses Falco, but he has a really really great Fox and Sheik as well.

im equal distance between albany and the city.......welll actually its 2 hours to albany and a hour and 45 from the city.from the last best i went to ur top players like beta and kwan would def rank below tfs not that there bad its just we have more top ranking ppl to play against. my tier list of westchester excluding pc cuz he is 2 good.
otg
niko
nintendude
pc kip
myself
sol
tuna
skinhoff
phish it

where u guys fit idk. i rank myself better than sol because i think vs other ppl i do better than him but he beats me cuz he knows my style but still he is a beast. i put otg over niko because otg is the most consistent out of all of us. kip is sooooo smart sum days i **** him but most of the time he skools me. i dont consider hazz because he is from li as well as mount vernon. i think he is in li more tho i could be wrong. tuna is MIA most of the time. so which players from up your way think will fit in the list besides u jesiah. ive seen beta kwan and erk play they r good but i'd put money on any1 on my list

The Mana Lord! and a couple others are better than kwan and last I knew better than beta too (but beta is getting good really fast). And I think they would prolly not be on the bottom of that list. Can only guess though

Who needs tri-state when you got the tri-city (buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse) anyway lol. Buffalo is a ghost town in more than just smash though.

Not sleepin I said they r good and r above the average smasher but at least when I played them(this is before I actually started playing with pc otg and niko often) I was beating beta maybe 8:2 my favor and I only played kwan a lil bit but I was beating him too. Now what im sayin is otg and niko r better than me NOW at my current level. And I have made ALOT of improvements. Idk if beta and kwan have been puttin in those hours maybe they have or havent but from what ive seen I just believe we r better.

I would love to play them again tho and ur other high ranking players

We started playing with PC two to three times a week in January, and well, there is a reason why Westchester > NYC atm.

I went to sudden death 1 and 2 over the summer when I was home downstate. It's 6 hours from rochester while I'm at school but if theres a weekend I'm not too busy I'd be down to make the trip if anyone wanted to drive down to tristate tournies. I def miss those while I'm up here

This. I'd definitely do 6 hours for a No Johns. I'll have to take you up on your offer, Jesse.

@Max: There's a No Johns this weekend? That's rather unfortunate timing, cause we're having a smashfest this weekend. And I thought No Johns were monthly? Hasn't one already happened for September?

I'm very sure that I'm going to AXS3 though.

Saturday is the first day of October, there won't be another tournament in our region until ROM4. As much as I'm sure you guys love playing one another and having a smashfest this weekend, this No Johns might be a bigger priority as y'all can probably play each other with more frequency.

Just saying.

Also Mana, we were supposed to play last summer while I was in Lake George and you were fake.
