Smash Master
Sup NYS. This thread is for anyone that is not or does not consider themselves part of the NYC Smash scene. I'm not that sure of who exactly consists of this, but names that come to mind would be Nintendude, Niko, OTG, Tuna and the rest of TFS, Kwan, anyone from Buffalo, PC, and anyone else who I can't think of.
I think about this a lot, and the more and more I think, the better of an idea it seems.
We should have a Power Ranking for the ENTIRETY of NYS outside of the NYC smash scene. We have enough good players at this point where it would not only be possible, but it would also serve the true purpose (imo) that a Power Ranking System is supposed to serve: Getting people motivated to travel to tournies, and improve.
I have a lot of pride in everything I do, especially Smash. I've lost to Nintendude and Niko in the past and have yet to beat them, so as far as I'm concerned I can't call myself the best outside of NYC, and that's killing me. With a Power Ranking System, we can rightfully rank all of the Smashers outside of NYC that are worthy and capable of placing high at regional/national tournaments, which there are players that do that.
I also believe this will be a HUGE help in preserving the Melee scene, especially in NYS. The region I am from, WNY, has a bunch of people who play DAILY and are getting better and better and can't wait to attend OOS tournies. Who knows how many people there are like that in other parts of NYS. Think about it:
A region has 5-10 low level players who play every weekend, or a few times a week trying to get better. How long will they stay motivated if they think they're playing a stale, dying game, as opposed to being able to have something to strive towards? (top 10 Power Ranking in NYS.)
This was never possible in the past due to lack of good players outside of NYC, but I think it's not only a very feasible idea now, but an idea that should be pursued for the sake of the NY community, and all of the players who have put in a lot of work and are good enough and should be repped via a power ranking system.
Last year in NYS, we saw tournaments in between NYC and WNY popping up frequently, and there are 2 more coming up quick: BEST in Troy, and AXS in Syracuse. I think people would be a lot more motivated to attend these tournaments (which in turn keeps the community alive) if they have a chance to be on a new Power Rankings, and the tournies will be much more hype as well, which, as far as I'm concerned, is the "magic" of Melee and what has kept me playing for so long.
That being said, I'm a little fuzzy on who all of these players would be. I know TFS is close to NYC but idk if they consider themselves NYC or not. Either way, I think we should discuss this idea and see if we can make something happen.
