I think having your better hand for movement gives you better control of your character.
I really disagree with this, because there isn't anything remotely difficult involving the movement keys. The most difficult it gets is pivots, which are really easy. Why would you need your better hand for the movement keys when good hand control isn't required? Kind of a waste.

I think which hand you use for moving doesn't matter. I tried both my left and my right hand and found no difference.
Also, I play the piano and I'd say it has nothing to do with playing smash on keyboard.:p

What's the main difference between the US and Japanese versions?

All I've heard of is that DIing is way harder in the Japanese version, or something like that, so Fox is even better (?).

the tier list thread is your best bet to read about every characters matchups and their options, but we need to make character specific threads, as reading the tier list thread is really a chore.
i cant find a tier list thread. maybe we can rally to the "top men" that own this website for a decent characted discussion thread xD. or we could just make one by ourselves...

We have character discussion threads, including one for Fox. All you have to do is go to the thread that says COME HERE FIRST.

The problem is, they're all dead, seeing as most players of 64 already know how to play most characters, and we don't exactly get a stream of newcomers.

Do attack-get-up animations (from lying on the ground) have invincible frames at the beginning?

yeh, but i just thought it would be pretty cool to have character discussions for fox and such. but yeah i can see that everyone has pretty much been mastered over 12 years.

Can you do Fox's shine TOO fast?

I've been using it recently and it seems that, when I slide my thumb from the jump to B, the dust flies up like I did shine, but I guess the shine didn't do any damage. Like I tried stading right next to someone and did it, and they didn't get hit?

So the shine doesn't come out on Frame 1 or what?

I'm 99% sure it's only possible to do shines too fast on slopes, such as the bottom left of Hyrule Castle. (if you move up the slope while doing the shine)

You can do frame perfect shines, and the shine won't show, just some dust. Multishining with that looks too pro. I'm not sure whether they have a very small hitbox or no hitbox at all, I haven't figured out yet, but it gets in the way when I try to shine jab sometimes...

And you can do them on flat platforms too.

Really? That's really weird, because since I play keyboard, I do shines too fast all the time (just an empty short hop), or just really fast shines, but I've never seen in-between.

Yeah, it's kinda the same idea as DJC'ing too fast, but it's probably not as common with fox's shine because doing djc attacks too fast with yoshi is really easy to do (which is the hardest thing for me to get used to with yoshi). I'm not sure if you can djc dair too fast with ness, but I know you definitely can with ness's uair. If you're low enough to the ground, you'll do the uair but notice that you don't see ness's head move back at all, and then ness is standing perfectly still. It can have little to no hitbox depending on how you time it.

You can see what it looks like here. ;)
...the platform was rising, same concept as the slope I mentioned earlier, something is helping the shine end earlier than usual.

It's possible with Ness.

I can confirm that it's possible to shine cancel quick enough that it doesn't even register as an attack but you still get that dust animation. I've done it numerous times on a flat non-moving surface.

I was bored about 3 months ago, so I decided to learn the timing of shine-cancelling, and I do remember doing many shine-cancels that I was completely inside the character (DK, if I remember right), and he did not go anywhere.

Question. Iv been z-canceling for awhile and am now switching from a falcon main to a fox main. Since i did not rly need timing as much as I do with fox I have a few questions for people who are conformable z-canceling all the time. I have conditioned myself to button mash the z button while I am in the air after an aerial but this has led me to sometimes hit the z too late and generate a shield before I can go into the combo (leaving the opponent time to roll away). Do you guys mash the z button or are you just comfortable hitting it once at the right time. The problem I have with that is depending how much of fox's d-air gets contact with the person depends on how long his air time is which makes the timing window different with every jump.
Any help is appreciated

Yeah, the timing can be tricky since you don't always get the same number of hits depending on how you hit them, or their character height. I always just press it once, timing it by watching how I ended up hitting the opponent (or not). Practice is the solution. Practice, practice, practice.

Most people time the Z (or R) button to Z-cancel.

Though what I do, which is slightly different, is as soon as I do my aerial, I press Z right away (just in case I get out-prioritized)... just in case another attack comes in and knocks me on the ground. This way, I will tech it (accidentally, but hey, it works), instead of being stuck on the ground. I then time it normally as I land.

This has been really useful for me... especially when I clank with certain moves (usually dairs).

booo.
Macros are blatant cheating, you suck if you use them.
Try to practice and get used to the keyboard. Don't do multishines, try easy and useful stuff first.

Time z cancels so you can move as fast as possible.

You can mash z for techs though

@Shooting Star : Yeah I know it's a uprising platform on the vid, but it still works on any surface.

Time your Zcancels, it might take longer but you won't have bad shielding habits, which can be dangerous when spacing aerials, it might give the opponent enough time to retaliate...

Ok guys, a silly question :
I'm not quite sure about the "pivot edgehog", does it refer to the dash then turn, which makes the caracter slide and grab the edge while doing so, or is it something done during the initial dash (while being able to dash dance) that i don't understand / know how to perform?
Thank you in advance :)

The former, where you do an initial dash+turn and slide off the edge. A fastfall is helpful after you slide off. Easiest with Falcon and Luigi.

pivot edgehog can also refer to a normal dash+turn that can edgehog for some characters e.g. Fox

Do we need complicated names for everything? When coining terminology we should go for something that can be understood by the name alone.

Not for me who already knows what an edgehog and a pivot is, but for new players it might be confusing.
Also, I didn't mean this technique in particular, it was more of a general remark.

Fairly sure all the explanations are good enough for anyone with basic knowledge of the game. All we need now is a series of youtube accompaniment videos of said techniques. Most of the tas stuff already has it.

lol just realised parts of my gamefaqs guide were put in

How do I get Battlefield working on PJ64k? I checked out Nokaubure's little list of codes and tried inputting, for example,

D00A4D09 0003
800A4D09 000E

Into the "new" section of the PJ64k Gameshark codes window, and saving it and then checking the little box, but nothing. (I thought it might make it so that when I selected planet Zebes in the stage select screen, I went to battlefield instead).

What am I doing wrong? Excuse my nubbishness. Perhaps there should be a Gameshark Code FAQ in the index for this sort of thing.
