I know in Melee I've seen two players come down in the same angel location? How is that possible if it's port-determined?

it is port-determined, but there's overlap on certain stages. on dreamland, everyone comes down above the middle of the top platform unless someone JUST spawned (in which case you're off-center). on battlefield, your port's influence becomes apparent. second and third positions spawn above the middle of the side platforms, which allows for super easy edgecancels on either side (like dreamland's top platform for non-spacies).

I always wondered this. I'm pretty sure it's based on ports. Summon Magus.

Only some stages have 4 respawn points with each 1 being for a specific port (FD, BF, Brinstar for example). A lot of stages only have 1 point which is shared by everyone (DL, YS, PS, FoD), so port doesn't really matter. On those stages if there's already someone sitting in that spot you respawn a little to the side of them. If there's someone there as well then you go to the opposite side, and you go above them I think if the default and both sides are blocked off.

Btw, knockback animations are randomized along with wait and maybe others I'm forgetting. One animation might cause the next hit to whiff while another would allow it to connect. I can see that being a problem with online play without having random seeds the same for each player.

no it's determined by amount of time spent by players on one side or the other

sure, there are set time limits where platforms change, but height/disappearance are reliant on how long players are on one side of the stage or the other

kinda like the tree on DL64, but with platforms
