Hey guys, got my hands on a laptop decent enough to play smash, so I'm looking forward to playing a few games on Netplay and maybe even meet someone here that'd be up for some local games (up in Darwin at the mo so probably not haha!).

I've been living my smash life vicariously through multiple viewings of the doc and matches between the pros so I'm total crap (haven't played in 6 or 7 years...) so if anyone wants a punching bag to fight against on Netplay let me know! Also is there a definitive place to go to find Aussie Netplay smashers?

I am a competitor in brawl and im asking for anyone who has any knowlege of Yoshi's weaknesses. Despite the fact that i have been seriously maining him since the dawn of smash, I feel as if there is a missing weakness that i have not yet covered on him after all these years of playing smash. If anyone can give me a rundown on anything that I probably might not know, that would be much appreciated. I am making 2014 my last hoorah for Brawl before moving onto Smash for Wii U and 3DS and i want to make it a good one, for I am even Competing in B.A.M this year and will compete in Shadowloo Showdown. I have had frequent placings in all my years of tournament playing and dont seem to get 1st place. So if anyone out knows anything, I would love to hear it. I just need to know if there is anything im possibly doing wrong.

Cheers Baron :)

Geez baron yoshi has more weaknesses than strengths but if you would really like the main ones glaring right at you I would have to say he has low priority moves and he is shut down by characters with projectiles.
Yoshi isn't good at chasing down characters who can run away and shoot (falco/rob/etc) and gets wrecked by characters with fast jabs or higher priority moves (ike/snake/mk/marth/etc). Also because of his play up close play style he is a high risk against characters with good grab game (ics/falco/etc)
And then there's diddy Kong. Projectiles, priority, grab game, run away options, combos...srsly *** that guy.

Why the hell do I use this yoshi character lol.

Hey everyone. BAM is a week away so I should probably introduce myself. I'm new to competitive Melee and hoping to improve and get to know the scene.
I'm a bit of a lurker online, but I'll think you'll find me a lot more friendly in person :) (if you spot someone with red hair at BAM, that might be me).

I think brawl is a great game, but i hope we can get along regardless...

Ruleset:

Prize pool depends on entrant numbers, and is usually a few hundred or so. Live stream is a strong possibility, at least for finals, although this is still being worked out.

Hey, don't think I've actually posted around here yet.

I'm new to competitive smash, played other fighting games competitively for a few years now, most playing Skullgirls and Guilty Gear these days but I have a tendency to at least try pretty much every fighter that comes out. So far I've only played a couple of games of P:M online since I started practicing so I'm incredibly fresh right now.

Playing Lucario (predictable I know) in P:M and Falco in Melee.

I'll be at BAM, going to enter Melee and P:M at the door, happy to go 0-2 for some experience haha, been doing it for a while now in other games anyway.

for melee we'll be doing 5 man round-robin pools, so no quick 0-2 for you!
at larger tournaments (though i don't think so for bam) we also run an amateur bracket for those who don't finish top 2 in their pool

good luck, gets lot of experience tomorrow!

Will be around tonight as well.

Round robin pools sound great. I don't understand the stage rules but I'm sure I can pick that up haha

I haven't posted here either :s

I really enjoyed melee back in the day but I never got involved in the competitive scene, not because I wasn't interested but because I didn't know it existed.

I'm getting into Project M now and I'm entering my first tournament on Saturday at Streetgeek. Much like Tomo I'm just looking forward to getting experience and I fully anticipate to get destroyed.

Hi. I've been lurking for about a month now so I figured I'd introduce myself.
I go by the name LocktheChest, and I have been a fan of smash bros for about 5-7 years now. Up until last year, I knew nothing of the competitive scene, until I saw the documentary, which got me really interested. I would now consider myself semi-competitive, as I play by the competitive rules, but I don't have too many of the advanced techs down. I'm from Elderslie, which is near Camden and Campbelltown in the south west of Sydney. I'm wanting to start going to tournaments so I can learn more. Looking forward to meeting you guys.

Hey all. I'm from St. Helena in Melbourne - Victoria, which is near Greensborough/Eltham/Diamond Creek (North Eastern suburbs). I've been to a few meets at SLHQ, met some people there and have been kinda hiding on the Victorian/Melbourne facebook group ever since. Finally decided to join smashboards after long last and try to get into the scene. I dropped off from meets and was going to attend BAM6 but late notice work got in the way unfortunately. I wouldn't say i've been smashing competitively due to not attending a whole heap of meets but myself and a friend of mine meet up quite often to practice and have been for the past 1-2 years with the aim of being able to fight competitively. Probably going to sign up for the next major event to most likely get sandbagged and get some more experience.

Looking forward to getting into the scene and smashing competitively with you guys.

Hey, thought I jump in here and introduce myself.

I'm a Melbournian Smasher from Northcote. I go by NanoHologuise (der~) or Nano for short. Fairly new to the game, started playing P:M and Melee on Dolphin with a PS3 controller about 3 months back. I main :marthmelee:, :sheikmelee: and :falcomelee: in Melee while dabbling in :luigimelee:, and I'm trying to get a grasp on :wolf:, :lucario:, :lucas: and:roypm: in P:M. Been lurking here for a little bit, but more active over on /r/smashbros. Anyway, I was thinking of attending BAM6 but stuff came up, and I should probably practice a bit with A GC controller before attending a tourney, idk. Probably gonna attend the next big event, but I'll leave that for the future for the moment.

There needs to be an announcement in huge flashing letters that new people have to see.
It should say: There are lots of really nice people in this community (except Bu$, he's killing the scene). If you have the time and are legitimately interested in becoming part of the competitive scene, you should endeavour to attend one of the small meets to get comfortable and have an opportunity to hang and play friendlies in a great environment.
As evidenced by the drop off of attendance between d1 and d2 of BAM, big tournaments aren't the best way to get comfortable with the game and the community. There's a ton of people and it's pretty intimidating.
That being said, come to the next big tournament too

Wait, I'm sorry I don't quite understand (lel). Is there a tournament being hosted coming up this year? Possibly in Melbourne?

Shadowloo Showdown (SS)
There should be some more monthlies coming up, not sure how Shadowloo and Couchwarriors are going for venues at the moment.
There are also quite frequent meetups organised via the vic/melbourne smash group.
Also keep an eye out for Miles' House 2, rumours are circulating that it'll be the hypest smash tournament known to man.

Fair enough. How would I go about looking for some small meets?

There is a thriving facebook group, just click ask to join and someone will approve your request soon. If you don't have facebook, it's a bit harder. You can check the group anyway and also there are occasional posts here on smashboards but the majority of the scene uses facebook to organise meets at the moment.

Oh, and a bit about myself:
I have been a Smasher ever from a young age, and have mained Zelda and Sheik in Melee and Brawl from the start. Secondary characters are Kirby, Luigi, Peach, and I rarely use Lucas, Falco and Marth. Though I believe I have mastered Zelda/Sheik's moveset, and defeat all of my friends with them. But its a shame that Zelda is quite underated, and I encourage all of you to try her out. Sheik is more popular, but Zelda is still (in my opinion) one of the best characters in SSBB.

Okay, let me take a breath. I prefer to use a GC controller, but I'm happy to use Wii remote and nunchuck. I have never competed in a competitive tournament for Smash Bros, and I have been dying to attend one. If someone could somehow fill me in on the details for the next big or small tourney in Melbourne, I'd be very grateful.

Nope. Bring your parents if you're not comfortable. The more the merrier
Sick. I'm pretty keen to compete, not entirely sure that I'll attend, but I hope I can. So there will be rules for Smash Bros I'm guessing, do you know what they are?
