when i mained mario i used to go doc for this matchup, its just soo much easier. techchase - stock, 2 grabs - stock. pill camping works really. you need to get ~24% from pills ~22% from dthrow -> dair a isolated attack then grab -> kobe.

as doc i spam a fair bit of dair and some bair. mostly dair and pills tho. mario sux in this matchup cos he cant kill her, but spam fsmash away.. grab away, fireball away and camp that puff!

Onstage caping
what causes the opponent to get knocked up into the air/get tripped by this?
what situations is this safe?
I use this shiz quite alot now. started playing mario again a bit

I find that it is our longest ranged aerial attack and messes ur opponent up. its good to cape people who jump oos cause it boosts them really high into a bad situation. Its good to aerial cape the wall of marth.

It's also really good to use on an opponent before they hit the ground (tripping); what it does is delay them slightly so they miss the tech. One interesting property is how it cancels ur jump. If you use it instantly, you still have enough room to aerial afterwards. Experiment, I am no pro of onstage caping but this is a move which has so much potential. onstage and off, it ranks with the shines and rest in gay.

The move can space really well, and turns them round when successful. Thats so gay. We have alot of control of our momentum as it cancels the jump, but it can also ride the peak of the jump.

Something cool is to cape out of a FH, at the perfect height to get you an auto-cancel (with FF). You could do that to mindgame them to rush you, then fsmash they azzzzzzz.

Hey fellow Mario mains. I'm reletively new to these boards and I have a couple questions. These questions are mostly regarding fundamentals in Melee and not so much specifically Mario (even though improving my Mario is my aim by asking these questions). So basically, I've been a Mario main since the first Mario Kart and started taking an interest in Smash on 64/Melee. Even though Melee is still my fav of the smash games, I take Brawl more seriously only because finding people to play is easier for me. This is because it seems that more people play brawl that I know and there's the crappy wifi as well. But when I saw videos of the Cape, I realized that there was so much advanced stuff I had missed out on in all those years. I was so uninformed about Melee that I didn't know what wavedashing was until about a few days ago. I did manage to play and try it out for myself. I just need to get the hang of it. Anyways, can anyone brief me on the best way to perform an up air without pressing the tap jump? I don't like the c stick but if thats the best way, let me know. Another, after seeing the cape do all those tech skills with dash dancing, up airs and wavedashing, I am really finding it hard to be that flexible. Not to complain but do you think getting a better controller would help. Mine is seven years old and pretty beat up. The analog is loose and the R and L buttons sometimes stick. I'd like to find an official gamecube one but new one's go for over $20 on ebay. Would getting a used one be best? Sorry to bother but I really want to improve my Mario in melee. And besides, I need the better controller for other games anyways. Thanks.

We would gladly answer dude all you had to say is im a mario main and I have some questions lol

- what do you mean by flexible?
- yeah Uair is best done with the C-stick
- Go to your local game stop and asking if the have original controller and if they do, it will come out to like 15$. You can also order one but those cost 25$

Regarding Controllers:

The best thing to do right now is to get a brand new one. Because if you are practicing melee tech skill it is probably going to get broken in. The analog stick (grey one) is probably the most important to break in, next is the jump buttons (x and y) then your Z button depending on some controllers. I know on my backups the Z button sticks a lot, but if it doesn't for yours don't worry about it

Regarding Uairs:

it is much easier to perform ANY aerial attack (including uairs) with a jump button (x and y, either work) and the c-stick. What I do is tap the jump button and quickly move my thumb to the c-stick. I'm not sure how long you've been playing brawl but you can also look into grasping the controller with your middle finger on the shield button, index on a jump button, and thumb free to press A, B, or C-stick (This is otherwise known as the CLAW) some people say they play faster with it, others don't. Try it out.

Start with Dash Dancing (DD) move on to Wave Dashing (WD) then move to l-canceling (l-canceling ...lol) then work on miscellaneous stuff that you may find difficult.

i do up airs with a and up lol. its faster

to explain why its faster

jump with x/y, be holding up a lil on the control stick, slide thumb to a button, fastfall with control stick. the only movement is your thumb moving one button down

with c stick you thumb x/y then move to the bottom of the c stick and push up then fastfall. it is a slower motion

Yeah, I figured that. Its just I'm one of those people that hate asking for help but oh well. Thanks. When I say flexible, I mean being able to execute good tech or move with good reflexes. My reflexes need work.

I thought you'd say that. I've had brawl since day 1 but didn't start researching advanced moves til about a year ago. I've heard about the claw and tried it. Yeah, its seems like its the best way to use the c stick for airs. I do try without it and I guess my reflexes aren't up to speed. I'm pretty in consistent when it comes to that stuff. I actually do my jumps like *pointing down* he does.

Yeah, I was just about to say that. I know what you're saying and this is exactly how I do the up air right now. I actually press A like RIGHT before I move the analog up and then I move it straight down. It works but can be risky. I guess its all about self preference but I'm still experimenting to see what I like best.

Since I'm already asking questions, I thought I'd throw this one out. What is the best way to grab. When I played melee, I always used z but in brawl I use shield grab. Now I mix. I ask because I always like doing reverse grabs in Brawl but they seem a little harder to execute in Melee. Is there a better way or is that self preference too?

very true.
c-stick only for short hop uairs so that u dont accidently use your jump.
Or for bairs with any character while u want to keep your momentum at the same time.

YES
The only part that matters.

Mix it up, if you're in your shield/running/whatever. The 'reverse' grab you're talking about is a pivot grab. In melee, it's through Dash Dancing (spam DDing lots) where you dash back and forth covering distance. From there, you can pivot on the turns of the dash to grab, you can pop a shield up any time and grab from there, or Jump Cancel grabs (by pressing X/Y/Up just before grabbing usually with Z) or WD/Aerial/whatever.

Dash Dance > Grab is best. It's like the spacing for goodness.

c stick is always slower and never better

end of story. if you can master control stick + a you will notice a difference
Z for Jiggs for aerials, C stick is beast for all aerials but Nair (like anything while moving max distance in any direction)

Don't listen to Pine, he has button and concept limitation naivety syndrome.

I Uair with Cstick, Z and A alternatively depending on what my fingers did before/are doing after.

People always laugh watching me play cause I don't do anything normal though...so I press buttons however I feel like at the time. lol

I know what Dash Dancing is and I know how to do it. Alright, I'll use that then. Thanks.
