I just switched some things around to a bit of what my opinion is and cut out all of the things that i hadn't deeply considered, anything in light blue i'm also a bit unsure of since mostly becuase Jarrod and Nick pretty much only play people from Edmonton. As well as John hasn't played anyone from Edmonton (in awhile?), with the exception of Sid.

I think the biggest change was I added Tyson way up there from out of no where since from what I hear, in my opinion Tyson has had the biggest improvement in Alberta recently, he deserves it.

I also put Shawn above Carl (sorry Carl), becuase Shawn seems to be a little more consistant, but I'm not an expert and haven't heard from who beats who in edmonton recently. I do hear that Mike has always been best of edmonton and still deserves top despite placing relatively low at CT3.

I think John from Calgary should also be up there /raised but still unsure.

Do I have authority to post an opinion? It's just an opinion tear it apart =:3

PS I should've commented on the huge wall of text before the rankings, this is my biggest post since the CAST3 one, so I'll take a break and congratulate / thank Mr. Randall

Edit: Stu does look too low here as well=\

I like the idea of only allowing people to submit why a person should be higher, not ever why somebody should be lower.
That might help to keep the attitude a positive one, because lord-knows... when you start putting numbers next to peoples names, they get a bit defensive...

Personally, I'm flattered that a tech-skill ****** like myself would even be on the list, albeit the lowest slot. With so many good Smashers out there, I would hardly say I qualify.

Now let me submit a request to raise a person's rank.

Honestly, I think Levi should be a bit higher. His flexibility with a variety of characters is impressive while he maintains a strong technical game with them all. It baffles me that he hasn't won a biweekly yet, although he came darn close the last one. I think one of his biggest strengths is the consistency of his play, and that level of play is steadily increasing.
Additionally, he rarely dies from a missed or failed tech move. Suicides are rare.
Levi for advancement!

I support mariownage's list, especially Tyson. I just played him recently and can attest to his improvement and overall skill. Nothing else really, because as per the mission statement, it doesn't really matter if 4 switches with 5 or 6 with 7 etc... that list is pretty accurate in my eyes.

PS Good on ya Randall for having the initiative to do this, and in such a precise manner. Me likes.

this is looking awesome.

I agree with raising levi because even though he doesnt always show well at real tournaments, I find hes definately skillfull.

I also agree with tyson, not sure where, but he should be up there.

I dunno about john, I agree he should be raised, but we also need to get him some out of calgary contact.

also, lol at humbleitch.

I don't want to draw attention away from the power ranking discussion but....

sdrawkcab (Mike?) you might want to get together with the few St. Albert guys [since they're closer than edmonton], they're friendly, funny, and not insanely good but they still know there stuff. I started playing smash back when I lived there :3

Nihility aka Parka would probably be the one to contact, and I love giving away parka's email address: here you go jiangshadow@hotmail.com

[lol, i hope he gets spam]

Anyways back to power rankings

I disagree. IMO Steve is >better> than fastfox. IMO steve effing wrapes. IMO Mike is more consistent than carl. Carl is really frickin good, top 3 fo sho, but Mike still tops, I think.

and I don't know about SHWN> Carl, I would say it's really even. But as per recent tournament performance, Shawn placed better at TCT and at CT3. So... i'm not sure.

also, who's spiritflare? and he's better than stu? no wayz <3, no wun is better than stu fo sho.

"Better than" is such delicate terminology.

I disagree.
Now now, no disagreements, only feedback. :) People are touchy, remember?

Oh, no harm done. Just if it was [/fixed], I expected it to be done right. ;)

...based on the criteria above...

I spent a lot of time reading your criteria. Although a lot of it makes sense, there should be "no johnz" in a tournament situation. If a certain matchup gives you LOTS of trouble, then you work on it. Getting good at smash is learning how to overcome things that gay you. In a tournament, it is your duty to whip it out like everyone else. Your time to shine. If you don't, for whatever reason, it is not anyone's fault but your own. By these standards, you shouldn't be airdodging off the stage more than once in a set, and if you do, you only have yourself to kick.

In terms of a bad matchup [Marth on YS], you have to learn to cope. And if you deserve to be named as one of the top smashers in Alberta, then you'd better be bloody good at getting over it. A win is a win is a win. The "randomness" of the situation [like the initial random stage at the beginning of a set] becomes minor when a set is played out, especially in semifinals/finals best of five sets. You mentioned this. I'm not sure whether you guys have this rule, but it may be an idea to implement the one stage banning thing. As in, both players may ban one stage.

Tournament setting is the ideal setting to determine true skill, and ultimately, a PR. To be very blunt, I don't care whether you get gayed by your partner Stu in brackets on Yoshi's Story, when you could have gone so much farther in the tournament than him. I don't care whether you punched a tree the day before the tournament. I don't even care whether your girlfriend broke up with you last night.

You go to a tournament to play, and you best do your best or you will be bested. No johns attached.

Nobody knows who he is, but xpiritflare does indeed own.
Are there any vids? Was he at CT3? and good that you guys have newer ownerer smashers.

Hehe, you've got it right Manuel, I wasn't really pointedly disagreeing with you, but rather reinforcing the point that strict numerical tournament placings are not the be-all deciding factor, I guess. :)

xpiritflare is actually not a newer smasher either, he just hasn't been able to travel yet. He's been placing top 2 in pretty much every tournament he's attended in Calgary since the beginning.

Ok. While in the process of making my top 20 list, I discovered my opinion of the rankings defied the results of the recent tournaments; I have so much of a discrepency that I decided I will create 2 lists.

One list will be an honest opinion based on my perception of each player's skill relative to each other player's skill. The other will be a list heavily influenced by the results of CAST2 and CT3.

I will most likely submit my opinionated list as the one which shall be weighted because it is my belief that the results of CAST3 will be almost precisely the same as my opinionated list.

Carl's list:

That's just my perspective, SHWN has been the most consistent out of the top 3 in my eyes; and yes Stu will always deserve to be higher, I agree on that. SHWN vs. Carl is even yes, but based on my knowledge of their tourney placings wherein SHWN has placed higher, I chose SHWN. Mike is too sexy, but Cral placed higher at OC2 so yeah. Pool johnz as well. and I chose Fastfox over STV just because he's a bit more active, but I could be wrong because Joel does suck LOLOLOL (jk joel I love you)

and yes Mike is more consistent then Carl.

I’ve excluded some players which are fairly high on some lists, but who I know do not play regularly enough for me to judge.

Players who barely missed the cut(no order): Lee, Stv, Wilson, RJM.

another quality post by Steve. STEVE FOR FOURTH! he is way too good

as a smasher that both fastfox and steve have never played, I came, and steve quickly adapted to my style, and even defeated manuel with donkey kong. then, he went zelda in friendlies and defeated my pikachu [wtf?]

also, he is dang sexy. Furthermore, he gave me as tough a time as -any other alberta smasher - .

I did have many matches with Joel, and I came to the conclusion that
a) he is a decent smasher
b) he must have hit that tree pretty dang hard, from all the resspect you guys are giving him.

I like joel and steve and all, mais je pense que steve est le smasher le plus talenteux.

edit:// Shwn is possibly even sexier than steve!

Hey, you might as well see how you rank up to eggz.

I'd like to see myself against him, hope not to get owned too hard.
Eggz isn't amazing. I like beated him in a mario vs ganon MM set and advanced slobs MM set the last time I played him. This was about a month ago. Yep I'm whipping out my **** in the wind boyzzzz

Kithkin you did not too bad against me. It would basically be like playing me... except I'm fox or Mario.

yeah, i was thinking of contacting eggz. But the question is, does he wanna go to the trouble of driving across town to play a nub. lol plus i'd make Alberta look bad.
Guys I'll do my best to get as many peeps as possible from WA to come to Randall's tournament.

Noobkings opinion on the PR: I've known many of the AB smashers for a long while and here is my current list..

1. Mike
2. Carl
3. Shawn
4. Steve
5. Fastfox
6. J-rod
7. Tyson
8. Nick
9. Sid
10. Stu
11. Aaron

I don't know about the new players enough. But ya. Oh and Kithkin should be around there somewhere probably >.>

OH YEAH GARY! He's Alberta. So when I played him, he did quite well. Plus he has cool hair. That has to count for something.

I don't know guys, he's pretty dang good, ain't he? Again, I didn't play Joel when he didn't own his hand , but I found them to be around the same. I only played tyson a few times =[ . But Gare-bear is too good, tbfh

I suppose Gary is Alberta, but I omitted him from my own submission until I got the chance to ask him directly who he would rather be represented under. I'm not sure how intense his school schedule, or how passionate he is about regional loyalty based on university applications. :)

OMG I got repped.

Yeah eggs would be interesting, but he'd play fox and whoop me.

and I agree that I should be in carls tournament results list, because I played above top 15 at both Ct3 and Cast2, but in the opinion one, I agree that I should be lower if even in it.

Thanks though Adam <3

<3 Manuel

I really don't know what I am. I do spend more time in BC but I've been playing smash more in Alberta than I ever did in BC. So I think I'll stick with whichever PR I happen to get on first. Beggers can't be choosers right? ;)

So after about a month long absence, I've come back to POWER RANKINGS.

I'm actually so happy that this has taken off, however I have some things I'd like to point out.

To the BC guys: You guys are great players, definately some of the best, however you don't take part in Central Canada smash often enough to have a solid say in the power rankings. Sure, it's opinion, however you're not around enough to derive a proper and accurate observation that would in turn give you a much better over-all understanding of how things are currently working.

To Steve: We haven't heard much of you, buddy, but last I remember I a greater ***** of a time against your Zelda than Sheik. We're going to have to rough it out though. You haven't played with us in FOREVER.

To Randall: Thank you so much for taking the time to do something nobody else would have done. You've helped me out so much with this thread that started as a shot in the dark. I owe you tons.

To everyone else: JOEL'S BACK

These are regional rankings across three provinces. We have to trust that intelligent comments are coming from players who know the game at least well enough to consider their input, without regional bias.

If BC doesn't have a solid, proper or accurate say, who does? Not me, I don't play with you Edmonton guys, not really. It would be easier for me to put Adam and Eric on a power rankings list than it would be anyone from St. Albert. For all we know, Cappin' Wings from Grand Prairie might be the best smasher in Central Canada! And based on the criteria above, we just have to trust one another to produce an honest opinion, because we aren't going to get a valid one. Which is why I stress how unimportant your position on the list really is.

The point is, there is no criteria for who has a valid say because everyone's opinion is completely and totally invalid. Now, that said, Cappin' Wings obviously isn't the best smasher in Central Canada because he's 4 years old. I don't want to confuse the issue, but there obviously is some reasonable sense of what is valid and what is not. That's where we just have to trust one another and discuss the process as amicably as possible. All positive! :chuckle:

The true goal is a national circuit; cooperating with the other communities is the first step towards making it happen and I think you probably know that, Joel, but your post kinda reads like a "we don't want your opinion so gtfo," if ya know what I mean.

Yeah I get it, but that's not what I'm saying at all.

Power rankings should be based on solid evidence that we have of the skill of the Edmonton players.
