A History of the Crown

so a while ago i read a post by someone (hugs maybe?), suggesting that there was a crown for melee. a world championship title. to achieve this, you had to win two consecutive top-level tournaments (internationals). based on that criteria, and making some corrections from hugs' blog, we've got the following list of chrownholders:

1) Ken
2) Azen
3) M2K
4) Mango
5) Armada

I'm teaching someone the history of smash, so I decided to put together a little syllabus of games for each one of these transitions. This list is somewhat frontloaded as I am a fan of the newer players, and older videos are of somewhat lower quality and are harder to come by. also i'm including hbox vs armada at pound v, because even though armada didn't win the tourney, it was significant in him beating hbox later. also i rearranged the matches in ROM (and included M2K vs. Shiz) because there was no grandfinals and this makes it seem better (and its just too awesome not to have, I realize m2k didn't have the crown, but as a previous crown holder, I'm allowing it due to epicness and the fact that i make the rules) i tried to include nationals only when there was no clear international happening / no clear international better play. that being said, i'm sure i missed something (not sure where SCC, WGF, TippedOff and some other stuff fits in, if they do at all)

anyway, all that being said, here's what I came up with. feel free to revise/suggest improvements:

stuff that definitely should have more in it should be the "reigns" of pc, m2k, ken
i.e. top level matches they played while they held the crown / that helped establish they held the crown

If there is an m2k vs shiz set that should be uploaded its the set from the FAST 1 tournament (Florida) in 2008. M2K vs KDJ from MLG Long Island was good too

I loved that m2k vs shiz set too, but I can't find it for the life of me

and not going to add M2K vs KDJ bc KDJ beat him in 2007, even though M2K would go on to hold onto the crown until mango showed up.
(note: if you can prove that someone took the crown from M2K before mango, lmk)

also not going to add Amsah vs Ek because even though its one of my favorite matches ever, neither player ever had a serious claim to being super champ #1

im going to add bombsoldier vs ken as that was one of the most international tournaments at the time and helped establish kens crown

so I think the only thing the "history" is clearly lacking are some major victories for PC. either stuff where he is claiming the crown (winning a top level tournament when ken was starting to lose) and/or major tournament wins during the post ken period where he was winning before M2K went all OP as **** for like a couple years

You could go as far back as TG4 and some of the early tournaments thereafter for Ken having the crown. Azen vs. CJ at TG6 and Isai vs. Ken at MOAST3 are also seminal matches, even if they aren't for the crown per se.

i agree with maskedmarth

imo cj, kdj, azen, and maybe chu/chillin were much bigger crown threats than shiz and should be featured in GF situations.

also i cant believe people still actually like that FAST set, i thought people just liked it back in the day cuz EC went so dry for melee after brawl came out.

I like that set just as much, if not probably even more so than m2k vs shiz from RoM... for one m2k went ALL MARTH in that set, whereas he switched to sheik a few games and shiz went all Falco, whereas he switched to fox in that set at RoM. Also the music in the last game probably has as much to do with my love for that set (EPIC).

oh ok, guess i had to be there. i never really knew why people liked it in the first place besides florida hyping up shiz. but the fact that he went all marth and it was a close set makes sense. all i really remembered about shiz before that was combo videos and that he couldnt beat forward so i never caught the hype

wait why isnt azen on there? he won mlg orlando followed by mlg NY in 2006, plus correct me if im wrong but i dont think PC won 2 consecutive MLGs that year so why is he a crown holder if azen isnt?

i had "crown" in almost entire year of 07. FCD was the biggest, but they lost all the vids. It was the best my marth has ever played. I remember both getting a 3 stock 30% vs Taj in crews before dying and also 3 stocking PC at low % first game in 65 seconds and winning the rest of the set 6-0.

At FAST1, I forfeitted to Cort, after cort 2-0d shiz with peach, because I figured the crowd wanted to see me vs shiz and it was not going to happen if i beat Cort in WF then cort beat Shiz again. I forfeitted like 500 dollars i would have made otherwise by doing a 3 way split and going to losers on purpose so i could have a set with him for the crowd. I do not think many people know this though. It was a bad financial decision, and good community decision.

I think Chillin is right on this. Azen should definitely be included in this list according to the qualifications.

okay, so after reading over a bunch of different sources, i think chillin is right.

and it seems that the correct sequence is
ken -> azen -> m2k -> mango -> armada

and there are some people saying pc / kdj should be crownholders. if you think that, please give me some evidence.

other things needed right now: matches during the reign of ken and azen where the champ wins and the matches are entertaining/watchable

this is an interesting thread.

I feel like PC Chris should be considered a crown holder, but I'm not sure if he fits in to the criteria you have laid out. It's just my opinion, though.

imo long reigning kings were(1 year or more)...Ken, M2K, Mango, and Armada right now

short term crown holders...Reciphirus (Old school sheik was considered best in cali before ken and isai showed up) , Azen (I think before Ken. EC boss for life), PC (in between Ken and m2k) and KDJ (made m2k's life a living hell during his reign. One of the few people with a great record against him)

when I think of the "kings of smash" I definitely think of the big 4, being Ken, M2K, Mango, and Armada.

It's more of a feeling than a precise measurement of how many tournaments they won though.

I have much respect for Azen and PC and KDJ, but for one reason or another, they just don't make my personal "Kings" list.

If we had a smash hall of fame (we should), they would DEFINITELY be in there, obviously.
