Hey guys, i really would like your help on something!
We’ve been trying to finalize our rules at the Video X Games lately, and are almost done with the exception of one thing: Stage Selection.
We have three options that we are exploring, and I’d like you to give your opinions on what you think would be the best format for stage selection in a Smash Bros Tournament.
1. The Traditional VxG Rules
The VxG traditionally had its rules pretty simple:
1. Players were give 10 seconds to AGREE on choosing a stage from any that they wish.
2. If within 10 seconds they could not choose, the referee would randomly choose one of the following stages:
Final Dest.
Dreamland 64
Battlefield
Yoshi’s Story
Pokemon Stadium
We hardly ever had a situation where the players would not agree on a stage before. Never had any problems. The arugment would be, however, is that we put too much control of the match in the hands of the contestants. However, since VxG has always been a tradionally democratic tournament, where we involve our contestant heavily in the rules and game selection, it was within our niche.
2. The MLG Rules
Almost all other rules of the games was based on MLG rules – No Items. We have considered using the MLG Rules to the following with regards to stages, but we’re not too sure. There rules are:
1. The higher seed has first choice for their seat and controller port.
2. The first round stage is selected by random.
3. Random select stages limited to: Final Destination, Battlefield, Yoshi's Story, Fountain of Dreams, Rainbow Cruise, Dreamland 64 & Pokemon Stadium
4. Stages not listed on the random select list that are not banned are open for counter picks by the losing player.
5. Stages banned for Singles Only: Great Bay
6. Stages banned for Doubles Only: Fountain of Dreams.
7. Stages banned for Singles & Doubles: Fourside, Hyrule Temple, Flatzone, Brinstar Depths, Icicle Mountain, Big Blue, Mushroom Kingdom 1, Venom and Yoshi's Island 64
These rules are pretty ok, but are a big complex to enforce based on the fact that counter players get to pick stages etc. We also have to keep track of the matches. But aside from the room for error on the part of referees, it seems ok.
3. The Simple Rules – Final Destination
Our referees have proposed a very simple rule, just one line long:
1. All matches are played on Final Destination
This, in my opinion, is an attempt from the referees to save themselves some extra work on managing our smash tournament which is our second biggest game (80 plus entries). Of course, its very boring, and probably very easy to exploit...
Well, those are our three options, please vote in the poll and let us know what you think. Any other suggestions are also welcome.
Thanks again for you input guys!
