  • Hi PP, your're my hugest inspiration for competetive smash and I cant thank you enough for your personal involvment in helping to improve the SSBM community! My question is more of a mental one; how do you best keep in a level headed mindset during or before a match? Secondly, which would you say is more beneficial during a given day of practice, fewer longer sessions, or many short sessions? Thanks!

    1. take deep breaths, remember your training, relabel your anxiety as excitement and enjoy your challenge.

    2. that really depends on how you work and what kind of training you do. i tend to think longer ones can be okay(depending on length) and you do different useful stuff at different paces during them. im pretty sure you could make either work though.
Love your avatar. How do you get out of Sheik chaingrabs as Marth? Also need some good approaching tips with Marth.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
slight DI forward and jump at lower percents, just DI out higher than that.

for approaching, you must control your own space with aerials and grabs and also be able to poke well moving forward with fair/dtilt. then when the opponent sees you act AS IF you want to do those moves you don't have to do them and can take more stage. be aware of threatening range and the threats attached to your dashes/WDs
Hi PP, you're a huge inspiration for a Falco also dealing with depression!
I've recently been experimenting with rising shine-lands. I'm itching a little to get some input on this. Details can be found here: http://smashboards.com/threads/rising-platform-shine-lands.415638/
It's a jumping shine into grab onto a platform sans waveland. Might be strict in the frame data, but the execution is quite lenient on shield.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
it doesnt work since you actually have to wait to fall onto the platform plus shield dropping beats it anyway. it's an alright mixup though.

thanks for the support and suggestion =)
    Jono
    Jono
Thanks PP! I also found that it's way too slow outside the side plats of BF/DL64 because it's too dependent on platform heights
Hey PP, I love melee and i want to be good at it, The problem is i don't have anybody to train with and the Smash seen here is pretty much non-existent, And i'm struggling with depression and anxiety so making friends isn't the easiest, So my question is what's the best why to train alone?
    P.S you're ****ing awesome
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
well firstly shame to hear things are so tough for ya! but you can get better on your own by practicing basic tech and getting extremely good at that as well as thinking of the uses of each individually and together. also training with 20XX for CGs/combos(test different percents and DIs)/tech chases will also be pretty good. if your character can edge dash then of course get that down too.
Dr. Pee Pee please respond to this.

PP you are my inspiration to get into competitive smash! Plus you have a Godlike Mental Game!
Hey PP, I've been struggling with the Sheik match up for sometime now, what are somethings you as Marth look for during neutral and edgeguarding?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
getting dtilt and fair and running grab, runoff fair and also grabbing edge and standing up then fsmashing them off into rinse repeat with edgeguard
    Cl0uD
    Cl0uD
Thank you PP, you are godlike with response's. I know it's far off in the future but will we be seeing you at Genesis 3?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
    should be!
Dr. Peepee. Respond to this. Please.

Really though your one of my favorite smashers. I like to use phycology in smash ever since I was little. I think that help me decided to what I'm gonna major in, phycology. That's why I pick Marth, I love out thinking the person I'm playing.
    Yeah, gotta love dem' waveshines.
I wish Melee had an online mode because I also play Falco in a proffesional form

You can download Netplay to play online.
    Dude, huge fan!
    Followed you!
I wish we could play SSB4 together.

    Dr Peepee
hey thanks a lot! not really my game though haha
Hey PPMD, Planning on picking up Falco. Curious if you know any good guides, videos and match-ups analysis! Cheers in advance. nice beard. hope you win big house.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
anything useful would be on my smashboards thread(s) and mango has done some match analysis already. i think ssbm tutorials youtube channel also has some falco stuff you can use.
Hey, peepee. I was just wondering if you can give me pointers on the Falco vs peach and the Falco vs jiggs matchup.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
hey i actually helped someone with this on my wall here recently just scroll down to see it!
    Guzzler Guzzler
    Guzzler Guzzler
    That was Peach Marth dumy
heya pp, im just interested on your opinion. What do you think of people who main a top tier and want to switch to a lower down on the tier list character because they find them more fun? Should they do it or should they just stick to the better character?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
if theyre pretty committed then the switch is fine
Hi PP, I've been having trouble against Peach/Shiek. Do you have any advice on comboing floaties with marth?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
try hitting them when theyre in the air with fair to start combos sometimes, and if they happen to be high up then uair can work. throwing sheik up is good for combos just look at kadanos thread. for peach you can fthrow tech chase for a while or pop her up with dtilt/fair and begin combos there. if they go high try not to FH too often.
Hey PP, just wanted to say you're one of the primary reasons I've picked up Melee, I even main green Falco. Is there any chance you'll come up to Maryland this fall? More specifically UMD Smash? Great job at EVO!
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
hey thats awesome thanks! and unlikely but you never know haha
I've started reading the book"inner game of tennis" and so far it talks about not thinking and judging during a game of tennis. Shouldn't you always be thinking in a match of smash?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
you can think during downtime like between matches or on the respawn platform, but actually thinking takes a LOT of focus away from the match. if you think then you can't observe or react as well.
Hey PP, what are some ways to improve your mental game in Smash? For E.G maybe a book or a thread Idk. Cheers
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
    inner game of tennis

    and

    art of learning

are my two favorite books for this
    Hey there,

I've gotten pretty good with Falco but no where NEAR as good as I've seen you play. What my question is here is: Could you give me some advice on Falco? I'm pretty good with the SH, dair, FF combos but if you could give me advice on some other aspects of Falco, that would be pretty cool. I have no idea how to multishine, shine grab, (insert more crap here)
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
just ask around on reddit or this site about how to do the basics. the basics will be the biggest thing for you going forward!
Hey Dr.PP, I had a question on how to improve my neutral game ? Or is it just something that comes with playing a actual person, or can i work by myself because i don't have someone I can play with all the time. (( I can just solo practice expect when i go to tourneys))
    Pάρί
    Pάρί
Also could you explain shadowboxing to me? I didnt fully understand it when I read your post on how to improve from just playing by yourself.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
ive explained this a few times on my wall please scroll down =)
Hey Doctor, for the entire summer I've been working to get an upthrow > rev. fair > fair > dair on fox. M2K notably did it to Leffen at Apex 2014 on FD here: https://youtu.be/MHhVPpSUh_E?t=325. He's done it a few other times, but my point is basically that I haven't gotten it all summer despite practicing on 20xx fox for hours a day. Am I missing something or should I keep grinding it out until I get it?
    G
    GSGreg
Of course I understand that it's really DI dependent, but I feel like it's one of those things where once I learn how to get the rev fair to fair, it opens up a world of comboing potential
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
well uthrow you have to not DI and then both fairs you have to DI in. thats pretty specific and wont work often on 20xx. if you turn off 20xx di maybe you can get it.

its not very important grand scheme.
Hey PP, alot of Marth's matchups have a general rule of not jumping unless your opponent jumps eg. Sheik, Marth ditto, Falcon. What of Marth's matchups does this rule not apply as much. Would it be against Spacies? Or does this rule generally apply to every one of Marth's matchups.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
you can jump in any matchup provided you are farther away so you can control your space.

also, vs ics and most characters below them, they can't deal with jumps too well so it pays to use fair and dtilt to beat them
Thank you so much for responding lol you made my day!
I have two more questions sorry hahaha
    1. I'm having trouble with aggressive Cap.falcons at the locals I attend, any tips?
    2. Would you consider coming down to Australia?
    Thanks again, cya
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
    1. dont jump unless he jumps, poke him if hes grounded
    2. i hope so one day!
Hey PP! Just leaving a message to let you know that you're my favorite Smash player and I look forward to the excitement you will bring to the future.
Hey dude your Marth is so inspirational and amazing to watch especially your movement. Do you have any tips and advice for movement? Cheers
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
thanks! for movement you can work on varying rhythm, but it also honestly helps to know what you're threatening with each action. learn the importance of dtilt to control ground and fair to control air and when the opponent respects the actions without doing them.
Hey I went to a tournament last night and played the best guy in my state and he said I need to work on my punish game but how exactly do I do that? Do I just focus on getting more hits or is there a certain way to practice it?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
use hits that start combos well like falco dair when you win neutral. then learn percents for what they can do after that combo startup and eventually fill out your combo "tree"
Hey, Man! Would there be any books you would recommend for mindsets in concern to melee.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
inner game of tennis and art of learning

those two will likely help most
Hey! Do you know how I can practice the 0-Death on Fox, using Marth? I lack a training partner, so I only can play AI. (The 0-Death involving Chaingrabbing > Up Tilts > Up Airs > Ken Combo.)

I don't generally have difficulty with anything besides the transition from Up Air to Forward Air. Also spacing multiple Forward Airs.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
look at kadanos thread for percents. otherwise its practice.

You're a cool guy Dr. Peepee!
I feel like you answered this somewhere but i can't find the interview or what it was you said it, but what is your favorite combo to land with each of your mains and why? genuinely curious because I feel like the more a player enjoys a combo the better results they see with it, and i want to see if I can use that as a study tool when I watch old matches. Or maybe I'm just making things up, but still interested haha
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
favorite marth combo is probably anything that involves nair lol. for falco anything long or involving shine to up-b.
I remember you saying something about marth dittos following certain rules, what are those rules?

You seem like a great guy and are my favorite smasher for reasons completely separate from smash (although im a big fan of your play too!) As someone who suffers from similar problems you are an inspiration for sure.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
    rules=
    1. dont jump unless they jump
    2. dtilt
    3. if you know they will dtilt you can jump
    4. throw them up and kill them

    and thanks so much!
Appreciate how much you've written about falco over the years. I tagged you in a question on reddit, feel free to ignore it, but if you're written something applicable already or want to hash out answers for yourself I'd love a response.

You don't owe us anything, and I don't want to imply that you do. You've given the community so much and you deserve thanks. Stay awesome, gett'em next time.
    Hey PP, so I wanted to give you a few days to let yourself relax after EVO to ask questions. How often do you theory craft new ideas and strategies in Melee nowadays that actually work, and what makes you think up those ideas. Also, I really did you extremely frustrated game 2 against Hbox at EVO. I thought you looked like you were gonna cry ;___;
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
go with basics. how to use moves, how to combo and control stage, edgeguard, things like that. that stuff always helps. and yeah i was super sad about how i played overall but getting grinded out is rough lol
PP I"m a huge fan, and I have to say that I really enjoy watching your Marth. If there is one question I could ask you, it's your opinion on Marth Fox. Sometimes I play foxes that just run all over me, and I feel like I can't initiate movement. What can I do to slow them down? Because in some cases, I can't grab without whiffing into an upsmash.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
When they come in then pivot grab their aerial or cc grab their nair. you can also fair them. when you can do that they have to slow down. you can also nair in place to stop most approaches as well.
    AirFair
    AirFair
Yoo thanks bro! hope you are feeling better.

gettin a bit better every day =)
Hey PP, was wondering where would be a good resource to learn Falco specific matchups. I find that I learn best visually so I'd love to know if you know of any matchup videos on the net. Of course there's always smashboards but generally they're text posts. If there aren't any, maybe it's something to consider for the stream? (speaking as a sub lol). Great job at Evo; only two more years baby!!
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
i dont think there are matchup videos but they may be on ssbm tutorials on youtube. ill try to make videos of my own for sure =)

Thanks man, looking forward to your return!
I'm reading The Inner Game of Tennis right now and I heard that you love that book. How would you rate it's applicability to smash? Honestly, I have a lot of difficulty getting around Self 1 telling Self 2 what to do and trying to verbally notice what the other guy is doing.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
it totally applies. just remember to notice what's going on and get some goals(and micro goals) so you have feedback and you know what and when to adjust.
