  • iirc, lucky and axe have beaten you when you weren't of god status right? What do you think you did differently from them to break into that next tier before them? Especially when lucky had mango as a practice parter, but you just had your brother.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
they did, and i just watched the videos and kept thinking on the game constantly. i know axe doesnt really use recordings much and i dont know luckys approach to the game very well. thats all i could say haha
PP I've been having my own personal success applying techniques to ease my nerves (or excitement :p ) in tournament, beating players that could beat me at my level and its all cause UUU so THANKS for the killer tips about Melee and Life. I hope you get all better soon :D

    1. play to learn more and play to win less. 2. train so that your automatic play is one that adjusts. do this through changing up actions as you know they'll be countered. 3. meditate+exercise to help focus.

Oh thank you PP! And it's really exciting to hear that your treatment is gonna be a guaranteed success! Hope to see you well and lively soon :D
asking here cause it's not a Marth thing, do you have any rules you follow when it comes to tournament day? I.E no social media (I think armada does this), only eating certain foods, paying attention to your mental state? I see myself getting first place at a local every week but it hasn't happened yet. I'm coming to believe that after studying it all boils down to how you handle tournament day.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
armada does no social because he doesnt get wifi at events lol. and yes tourney is about how you carry yourself in addition to melee. i like good sleep, meditation, eating heavy early on and then light throughout the day except for breaks, light exercise helps me too, social media isn't super helpful either so that's a good look, don't burn yourself out on friendlies, so on

At that first thing, oh rofl. I see no reason for any players to NOT apply those things! I'll do my best :D
I see Westballz do a lot of fullhop/ tricky double jump dairs and gets a lot of trades with that. (I've noticed it mostly vs sheik and Fox but havent seen any other matchups since Ive noticed how much he does it.) Is that just basically just a good way to abuse dairs priority/hitbox? Or is there more purpose that Im not seeing.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
yeah it's a good way to abuse that. there's certainly more to abuse there like falco's fall speed or no character being fast enough to fully account for where he will land among other things, but that's the general idea
Ok well im back again lol
I was wondering if you have any tips on ways to adapt to a player quickly. I can adapt to someone's play style, but it takes way longer than it should( at least i think). Basically what are some things you do to learn a player and adapt
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
watch more matches/break them down, develop understanding, play to learn instead of play to win more
Is meditation useful for improving your play at low-mid levels or can it impair learning? Would it be better to try and make decisions with a conscious reason instead of just breathing and watching your opponent while your mind plays?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
its extremely useful at any and every level of play. its better to let it happen
Hi sorry i got another question( I plan to leave you alone for a little bit after this question)
How do you deal with someone like mango who has great sheild pressure and is really aggressive.. My falco is getting wrecked by this stuff. I have been told i up in corners and pin myself down. I know about shine out of sheild and cc'ing but i still have issues.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
go to them first, cut them off when they come in early
I always hear the word fundamentals being talked about in melee. Leffen always mentions them but whenever i look it up or ask someone to explain fundamentals they don't have a good response. I know explaining something like this could take forever, but do you have any fundamental melee info that you could explain to me?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
divide the game into categories like neutral combo juggle DI tech chasing edgeguarding stage knowledge and so on. work on each part individually and those are fundamentals. im working on something more comphrehensive =p
Is there a point of competency with falco where his movement seems fun/natural instead of him seeming slow ? Its just so easy to feel good movement with fox and marth. Or does falco always seem slow in comparison ? I sort of have a theory that Falcos movement will be very fun once you are good at it like the top falcos are but right now it just feels gross compared to fox/marth effortless dash dance.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
yeah it takes longer to get that feel with him but when you do its also really good
    hey PP :)
I'm not a very emotional/expressive person - I think my voice sounds very monotone (some others agree) and it's kinda hard for me to express myself/be very enthusiastic or bubbly, or just more expressive in general. I would really like to be more expressive though! I remember you saying you wished to be more expressive - how did you approach this?

Thanks, love you Kevin. Hope you feel awesome soon!!

    1. get models, or people who act like you want to act and do what they do/ask them about how they work. 2. develop a serious meditation habit so you can see where your sensitivities stop. 3. cultivate body feel through a consistent exercise habit.
    Sylarius
    Sylarius
thank you pp!! I just borrowed out a couple meditation books, going to try and get into the habit. (Mindfulness in Plain English)
where did you get started with meditation personally? I'm getting good exercise atm + will talk to good friends of mine so I just need to get meditating out of those suggestions.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
i started with "breaking the habit of being yourself" and "the art of learning" and one of bruce lee's books. mindfulness in plain english is great too that should work fine!
    Hi again
I was wondering if you have discovered goods and useful ways to tech chase with falco. I often just tech chase with dair if i can hit it or a smash attack and that doesn't get as much reward as something else
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
dash attack/fsmash/dair are all really good but it depends on percent and spacing
    Hi pp
So i main falco and i am having this issue. So im can't handle any pressure at all when the opponent threatens my range. So i just run away and laser and then corner myself and then i get wrecked. Its like i don't want stage control but thats why im lasering but the lasers are all defensive. Do you have any ways i could fix this issue

laser and then attack afterward more. the opponent will have to respect your possible attacks(which are very good) and you'll get more breathing room
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
or just do more approaching aerials when they think you want to laser
Is going back and reading the entire marth thread on smashboards a good idea? I enjoy reading basically anything melee related and it seems like theres probably lots of good stuff there. If I went back to like 2012-2016 would that help me learn marth without getting false facts in my head if I stuck to mainly known marths etc. ?

As a follow up is the date you recommend for the falco thread about the same mid 2011?

hmmm maybe yeah thats pretty good or even early 2011
Sorry if this is personal but how have you dealt with your depression? I find I rarely have the motivation to go to tourneys the past few months and I just spend a lot of time trying to maintain/improve tech skill while my neutral declines.

I still love the game but I'm never in a good mental state.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
sleep as well as possible, EXERCISE, therapy is pretty good, get sunlight, hydrate and eat as well as you can, and challenge negative thoughts. if you do only one of those things do exercise and the rest will follow. just keep at it and don't give up!
hey pp first time long time.
I have 2 questions for you. 1. any advice on understanding neutral? everytime I analyze I can't keep up with why people are doing things.
    2. how do I beat you?
    Hi PP
Sorry back again with another question, but this one is more about your mind. I know you have one of the best mental game of any smasher. Anyways when I play I am that kid who can do tons of tech skill but in a match I can't think and adapt to what the other player is doing. So how do I think more about the game when im playing. I kind of just yolo it when I play, and do what I practiced
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
practice doing things that help you approach or defend like in a match. practice doing it and find where it loses then practice how to cover those weaknesses. then try it out vs people
Comboing spacies off-stage more is helping. I find that even if they DI Fair away and I can't get a true follow-up, I can react to most recovery options... or at least be in a strong position. So thanks!
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
there you go! good luck =)
    Hi PP
I was just wondering if you could explain to me falcos laser game
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
cant really do that =p if you have something specific i can help tho
    K
    Kyle Miller
Ok how about this can you explain when to stop shooting lasers and approach. I have had an issue where im either to agressive and i get sheild grabbed or something like that. Then im too passive and the opponent has time to approach himself
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
stop shooting and approach once your opponent respects your laser control. usually you don't need more than two to achieve this.
Do you have any advice on what to look for watching mangos marth ? As far as what tools he uses to use neutral and what hes basically trying to accomplish ? just a tldr would be amazing
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
watch his jumps, his tech chases
wise pp, i need your wisdom. I've been playing for about a year and 8 months ish and am sruggling with dealing with falco's lasers as marth... other than that I'd say my punish game is pretty good on him, but any tips on neutral for that matchup and making those opening you need to get that grab? Thanks #stackitup
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
work on crouch/dash back PS, dash attack under lasers, take laser jab/dash back, get close enough to falco to jab/fair his laser startup
    Hi PP,

Just started playing melee about two weeks ago and love it! My main is Falco and I'm getting basic tech down . I was wondering what you did to practice at the really early stages of your melee career. Thanks!!!
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
just the basics all of the time. being as good at those as possible. i also practiced combos a lot!

    Hi PP,

I really enjoy your taste in books. I've been looking for something to read. What are your favorite books?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
"the six pillars of self-esteem" and "the psychology of romantic love" by Nathaniel Branden. "unlimited power" by tony tobbins. "tao of jeet kune do" by bruce lee. "happier" by tal ben-shahar. those are some ones i really like that i dont often talk about.
Hi PPMD, have you ever had falco's shine spike downward?? It's happened while practicing more than once and happened again today. I was just off the ledge to shine bair fox and instead of popping fox up, the shine spiked fox down into the blastzone. At first i thought it was a phantom shine, but the fox was in hitstun. I haven't found anything looking online. Have you come across anything like this?
Hey doc, do you have any tips for marth's neutral game, especially knowing when to approach?
Hey PP, what do you think about falco d-tilt. have you ever experimented with RC dtilt at kill percent or as a techchase?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
laser dtilt is good to kill with tbh
Hey PPMD. I was watching some sets between you and Leffen and I came to a very interesting conclusion, but I'm unsure if it can be considered right. The neutral (in my mind) is essentially trying to understand what your opponent wants. You can set up neutral in a "textbook" way to deal with matchups, but that begins to develop to what the player wants, and how they adapt to what you want as well.
    Siccamende
    Siccamende
I've also been kinda letting myself down recently since I haven't been performing well. And seeing that you got really good in 2 years (I've realistically been in the scene since Big House 4, but didn't enter any tournaments until the summer) makes me kinda worried.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
its just about how you train. change your strategy and change your results
    Siccamende
    Siccamende
Yeah, I've been slacking for too long anyways. Recently, I've taken Melee a lot more seriously by taking notes from watching matchups and my own set. Yet, as I have been taking notes, I don't really know how to implement a specific mixup or general gameplan into my game. What should I do?
Sup PPMD. As the "neutral game god" of melee I wanted to ask you something. Neutral is probably my biggest issue, and I often autopilot and end up just throwing Ftilts and Fairs out hoping for them to hit. I want to play a thoughtful neutral, but I never seem to, which is very frustrating. How would you recommend I think about/what methodology should I use in neutral as Sheik to be thoughtful and improve? Thanks.
Hi PPMD, do you think watching sets of Westballz's Falco would be informative? Or is his playstyle just too distinctly based on an excellent punish game? What do you think are some good Falcos to watch and learn from? (And you can include yourself if you think so! :p ) Thanks!
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
westballz definitely teaches important things, but im not sure id consider him the best source. i think my stuff and mangos stuff is more straightforward to learn, but we've both played pretty badly for a while now lol. if you don't mind, then my older stuff is great i think!
Hey PP. What are your tips on complicating my dash dances to make my approaches more elusive?
Hey PPMD, do not know if this is an ambitious question lol, but I have recently improved a lot. I lost to a recent player, then beat him the next local by studying up. The next time he has played me, he beat me again. If I want to be consistent vs X player, should I be looking back on past notes as well? I have a document, but im uncertain how much old notes can help, or if I even need to keep old notes.
    onlyaaron17
    onlyaaron17
My second question would be, what are good ways to retain information? I feel like that when I improve as a player I remember most of the fundamentals, but the way I play in game "shifts" to another type, rather than expanding and retaining knowledge. For example : One week I may play a very controlled strategy, and another week after studying I may switch to a heavy pressure strategy.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
past notes help since you can find the commonalities or what they changed and that can give important information. some of what you deeply learn you just get internalized and don't have to worry about it anymore. if this isn't happening for you, then i suggest writing down core principles of the game as you see it so you can remember it and apply it to matches.
Hey PP. I think the Falco ditto is perhaps the least talked-about matchup in all of the top tiers. Do you have any knowledge on how to punish things such as: laser spamming, full hops/double jumps, up-tilt/bair spams? Any input on how the matchup looks like in 2016 is appreciated, even the neutral.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
laser spam=jump over low lasers or bair oos vs approaches from them or go high then come down with your own. FH/DJ= get under them at an angle to bair/utilt or meet them in the air with bair/nair/dair OR challenge their landing. utilt/bair= lasers, fsmash, your own bair, i guess you could ftilt/dash attack too lol
    Hey there PP,

I know you are basically the mental game master, and lately I have been having trouble in regards to it. In tournament I often have a problem concentrating. My nervousness often causes my to forgo combos, which is detrimental to my play. Is there a certain mindset I should have when going into a tournament set, or does this just come with experience. Thanks
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
the best documented research technique for this is re-labeling your anxiety as excitement. i would try that!
    Hey PP

Quick question about Marth vs Pika. You went for a lot of Fsmash's on Axe's QA recoveries, trying to catch the extended hurtbox with a tipper. I was curious how you went about practicing that, if you did. Also, do you believe Marth beats Pika harder than Falco, or were you just trying to avoid Axe's proficiency in the Falco MU?

Hope you feel better soon homie
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
i didnt practice at all i just watched when it worked in videos and replicated it. i think falco beats pikachu harder currently but i also don't know marth pika very well. i picked marth to learn the matchup better

    Hey pp,

Falco main here, struggling with the sheik matchup. How do u deal with sheik tech chases on falco? Is no tech the best option since u can smash di the jabs or is teching necessary? I need some thoughts on this because my falco techs always seem to be easily read by my opponents. Also how do u practice defensive options such as these by yourself?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
ambiguous DI/DI behind her is good. DI away tech away is good since falco's tech roll is long. missing tech is good because you can SDI jabs. if you mix these things up well it's your best chance! idk how to practice this alone but you can with a partner or just watch videos and try it in friendlies
Hi PP! How do you actively improve your neutral/footsies/decision making in friendlies? I find it difficult not to play mindlessly as the game moves so fast.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
you have to practice doing appropriate inputs for various things like offense or defense. then you can be fast enough to apply them in the game!
Sup PP, huge fan :D I have a question about falco vs fastfallers, just wanting to know your thoughts basically. So you know how at very low percents if you dair > shine a fastfaller you can wavedash out of the shine and then follow their DI and shine them again? At least this is the combo I usually see from most pro falcos. It is especially common on FD because they won't fall onto a platform.
    cub0ne
    cub0ne
The wd would put me directly under them if I happen to go the same way as their DI, but if I wd away I sometimes can't make it back under them and may have to end the combo prematurely with like a nair. So, to me it feels like the short hop method is the most optimal, but I wonder if there's a reason the waveshine is better. Thanks in advance PP, I am awaiting your resurgence and can't wait to see you play again!
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
typically they can go very far if they (S)DI away from you depending on which part of the shine hits them and also their momentum before getting hit. basically it seems like people aren't abusing this far shine momentum(look at falcos at high level matches to see how far shine can send FF'ers). you can SH vs your opponents now but maybe not later
    cub0ne
    cub0ne
Thanks, that makes total sense now. I probably just never noticed the difference in distance between what top level players are doing as opposed to my opponents. Appreciate you my dawg.
Hi PP, I was wondering if I could ask you for some MU advice; I'm a huge fan of my local scene, but the issue is, one of the best players here is a Peach, and I just can't seem to make this MU work. Do you have any advice as to how to fight Peach with Falco?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
laser her when she's grounded, use platforms/high jumps and falling lasers to hit her out of her float. shine grab her shield. juggle her with utilt/bair
    Daze 072401
    Daze 072401

Oh yeah, outside crying, is there anything I can do against Sheik? I can't deal with Sheiks crap.
