  • When you were starting to become better and reaching your God status, what was your training regime? How did you get your movement so crisp and fluent? To be able to shine combo someone full stage or to zone and juggle someone with Marth. Also I think it's amazing you take time out of your day still to answer these questions and I hope to see more of you in future smash events.
Hey PP, super fundamental question I have. What do you think is the best way to improve at the RPS side of smash, in which attack beats grab, grab beats shield, shield beats attack? Predicting correctly which option beats what and stuff like that. Thanks :>

learn how to make the most of each tool, how people generally think of each tool, and how to get the tells of your opponent so you know what they'll throw before they do

alright thanks! i like the media you're producing as well, keep it up :D
Hey PP. Relatively new Marth who likes to study options / theory. Been searching a combo flow chart for Marth (any matchup), but I couldn't find one anywhere. The closest I found was a chaingrab chart vs spacies and one of your comments regarding fair comboing. Do you know of any tech chase flow chart / combo flow chart or can give me any advise regarding it? Thanks a lot in advance! I hope you get better soon. :)

kadano has a lot of good stuff in his thread op on throw followups. its too nuanced for me to give easy answers, but tech chasing at very low percents and then adding in uthrow at low and mid percents is a decent general rule
Hey ppmd, just stopped by to say hope everything is going okay. Cant wait for your recovery. Ill keep you in my prayers. Watching your matches always inspires me to keep practicing my falco. Just wanted to say thanks.
Hey PPMD I've been playing Marth for over a year and all my tech is awesome but I can't short hop double fair. I've practiced for hours but can't manage to speed up my thumb. I use X to jump and A for my aerials, I've tried to change to using Y to jump or the c-stick for aerials but they don't feel as natural as X and A. Do you have any tips and if not should I still play Marth or should I focus more on my Falco?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
just try to do the first fair as fast as possible before adding in the second. separating tech into parts and speeding those up is way better for success than trying to do it all at once.

I know I'm not pp but try using z for aerials. It's really close , not hard to press and you can just use the control stick
    B
    Bekk
thanks, ill try that. I've never thought of using z
Hey PPMD, when analyzing your matches. Do you think there is always a common theme you are to look for when you lose? Like say you are writing down what you got hit by, and why. If X situation did not happen again, do you think it is still worth noting unless it led to a kill?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
everything is worth noting. and yes there are always consistent themes
Hey PPMD, do you have any advice for the falco v marth match up and the falco v puff match up. These 2 are the bane of my existence, i literally picked up marth for the marth match up. But I dont want to have to rely on marth for that match up. And puff, I just have so much trouble with, I cannot got any consistent combos on her.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
both of those reward patience on falcos part. dont rush! also shine grab is really really good in both. count puff jumps, bair/utilt her and dair to dair combo her(on platforms when possible). for marth, watch for PS and shoot low lasers(hard to PS). approach with nair since dair is easier to shield grab unless you know youll hit

Sorry for the late response. Practiced this and went to my weekly and literally 3 stocked a marth who has consistently beaten me. I realized that Im always too aggressive and I never dial it back and I always get punished for it. Literally all it took was patience. Unfortunately, I none of our puff's showed up to the weekly. But seriously, thanks, I Cant wait to see you back at majors again in the future.
hey i try to watch pro matches to improve my neutral and see what better players do but cant find anything. is there something specific i should look out for. Also any tips for anything would be awesome.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
try lower level matches and look for what happens right before a hit and find patterns

also my 20xx stopped working, i was wondering if u could help me out. like it starts and everything, but whenever i start a game, it dies.
Hai pp thanks for answering all our questions! I was wondering what are falco's best options when he is in really tight skirmishes. Would you back out until you have room to laser and then approach, or would it be better to create a wall of backairs/uptilts? If neither then what do you think is the most appropriate thing to do?

Also what should I be doing when someone is all over me? Is it better to counter when possible or is it better to try to get back to neutral asap?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
kinda depends on matchup. utilt, AC Bair, FH away, CC, reverse SHL are all good

Hey PP. I was wondering about your thoughts on training by myself. I have a consistent training partner who is slightly better than me, and I have a few infrequent mentors who are substantially better than me. What kind of things should I practice by myself without forming bad habits? (Assuming I am learning techs correctly).
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
different approaches/compound approaches and defenses. ways to start combos and how to use them to reduce influence of DI. 20XX also helps with tech chasing so I'd recommend that too if possible.

Thank you so much! I'm using green falco with pride :') you're one of my heroes
Hi Peepee, for up-throw followups on Falco, do you react to where they DI the lasers? Or do you just try to go for a 50/50 and read a DI to one side? I figure if you were to react you'd need to be very quick on the draw since a moment's hesitation would allow them to put out a hitbox or jump, right?

Best of luck on your path to playing again! Melee would be a worse place without you man :)
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
you mostly have to read it but if you practice it enough/react quickly then you can react. its dependent on percent stuff as well.

    thanks! =)
Hey PP. I am very new and was wondering if you could provide a little help. Specifically in the fox/falco and sheik/falco. I feel as though falco's short hop laser ruins all of my approaches. Then after i get lasered i get shine daired for about 70%. I try and use platforms but find myself unable to come down. Anything helps!
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
work on powershield, runoff fair with sheik or FH Bair with fox to keep falco out and hit him. you cant approach him until youve stopped his approaches.

This seems to be draining mentally, and time wise, plus i've been going to a lot of tournaments, so there is a lot of analyzing to go through. Is the information off one game enough to merit what I need for the future?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
the only way youll know is to look. if youre tired then dont bother, but you should check to see if you find the same patterns in the next game at some point. its most important to do what you think will work best, and then adjust your strategy as you see results.
What goes through your head when you play Melee? I'd assume a lot of this game is muscle memory to you now, but I'm curious as to what you focus your thought onto when you play the game.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
not a lot when i play since the thinking part of your brain has to be quiet in order to focus well. occasionally i think a one-word thought to help change my focus like "lasers" or "focus"
Hey PP thanks for being so cool and answering questions, I’m fairly new but I got out of pools at pound, but I feel a huge gap of fundamentals between the newer players and players that developed their game over years. Obviously playing the game for years would give you experience, but I see the issue that newer players only really have tech skill video content to learn from...

Any advice on falcon vs Falco matchup from the Falcon perspective
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
SH aerial over some lasers, CC nair approaches and grab, take laser aerial or dash is good for stopping falco approaches, platforms are good for avoiding falco pressure or getting a reset situation, be sure to space when close to avoid utilt/bair, watch 20gx for edgeguards and any good falcon for tech chases

Is it bad to try hard in friendlies? I often don't know exactly what to practice since I have a decent understanding of options at different times but want to work on playing faster and almost automatically choosing what I believe to be the best response to different situations.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
alternate between playing to learn and playing to win. its great
Hi PP! Do you do only breathing meditation or more advanced stuff? Eyes open or partially closed?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
easiest answer is breathing meditation, eyes closed
Hi PP you seem like a really smart guy, do you have a good method for keeping mental notes on your opponent during a match? To keep track of how they react to certain mix ups or is it best just to figure out their habits after the matches for the next time you play them?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
thats all just stuff you practice and internalize through learning more about the game and having setups to see how they respond. that comes as you learn more

Haaaaaaaaaai PP. Before I ask you a question I want to thank you for helping new players and answering their questions. I really respect you as a person and a player. You are a very good role model and I like your way of explaining things. You give what you think is the best answer without confusing anyone. I sincerely from the bottom of my heart hope you get better.

you need to lose more so you get used to it. play friendlies, especially with people youd hate to lose to, to learn. this will result in more losses and you can get used to the feeling for tourney. if you have to have it be tourney to get used to it, then use that as well and hold onto the feeling to use for friendlies.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
as you play to learn also, you'll still be improving your game so when you finally play to win again youll be even better
How many viable characters do you think there are melee?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
can win a tourney solo= maybe 6 or 7. can win as a side character is probably 10-12
Dude, at Battle of the 5 Gods, from what I can tell from the stats, it looked like you were getting your butt handed to by Westballz, Plup, Wobbles,....... MacD, and Silent Wolf?! What happened, man?

Hi PP, I bought a white controller 5 months ago and I've played with it everyday since but I still get snapback issues like firing the wrong way with Falco when I do retreating/approaching lasers and it's really frustrating, I've even lost tournament games because of this. How long did it take for the snapback issue in your white controller to resolve itself?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
that's odd if it's new. I just practiced shooting the correct way many many times and it worked out.
Hey PP, I've just started playing melee competitively. I know the cornerstones of Marth, though I seek to improve my playing skills. Any advice to an aspiring player?

Thanks, keep up the good smashing, I hope to see you go to more tournaments.
Hia PP, I've been reading the Inner Game of Tennis and was wondering if there were any other books you'd recommend when I finish it.

Also, how can I remove the negative judgement of obvious mistakes? For example, things like CCing Peach's downsmash are obviously not recommended. I can note it as a mistake, but that in itself seems to carry a very negative connotation.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
    you note outcomes you want.

and the art of learning is a great book
Hey PP. I've been focusing on little micro situations but I've hit a wall and need some input. When Sheik is being approached with lasers by Falco, I try to punish it but I keep losing mostly when I've got my back to the wall. Nair oos after the laser loses to dair but if I wait n/dair shinegrab comes out before nair oos. I've been trying to get in vs Falco & can't because of things like that. Any suggestions?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
fade back with dair or just roll when you see the dair, or just shield grab the dair since it isnt very safe on shield, or nair oos after the dair hits your shield. you can also nair oos between shine and grab but it can be really hard.
Hey PP, I love watching your Falco and I hope you get better soon. I was wondering if you have any advice for this one problem I noticed I have. In the neutral I will sometimes notice a habit that my opponent has, for example, if they tend to roll everytime I come in with a SH laser,
    E
    Eric22
I wood notice their habit but the next time i wood do the same approach I still woodnt cover that option sometimes even though I previously noticed it. im not sure if its because im not consciously thinking enough wen im playing or if im not focusing on the right things while im approaching someone.
    E
    Eric22
or if it's something that comes with time? (Im relatively new to melee, ive only been playing for about 8 months) do u hav any advice on ways to fix this problem? thnx in advance!
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
well you have to know the counter to it and think of what the option is as well as train yourself to change up on your approach. make sure you practice doing different things off of approaches and this helps you be more flexible in matches when you notice things
Hey PP, do you have any advice or guides on properly analyzing high level matches? I'm a low level player trying to improve my neutral game by watching top player sets, but I have a difficult time figuring out the reasons behind most of their actions and how they force mistakes to get their hits in. Thanks!
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
just look for when a hit happens and why. if you have a hard time dissecting those on those grounds, then try more high or mid level matches since those are simpler but still useful
Hey Kevin this is Kidd back in South Carolina. I hope you're doing well and I wish I could catch up w/ you again at a tourny. Do you have any plans to go to anything locally any time soon?
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
couldnt tell ya when right now but just keep checking in and youll know =)
PP do you have any advice for improving punish game with Marth i'm pretty new to the game and feel like at this point the only thing keeping me from beating some of the better players in my state is that I don't get enough off my hits. I feel like Marth doesn't really have many tools to extend his combos and honestly it feels like there is less hitstun in game then there is when I watch videos of good Marth players.
    DutchCG
    DutchCG
It's all about using the blades weaker hit boxes and stronger hit boxes based on the person you are comboing's percent. Use end of sword for the beginning, and than as you get them to higher, move down the blade till you can tipper to send them flying. Marth is entirely based on grabs, baiting, and proper movement.
    Dr Peepee
    Dr Peepee
get tipper fairs, uairs, and grabs. learn how to get the most out of each of those. taking a starting position and percent vs 20XX cpu and try something and observe your options. also use kadano % guide on his thread.

    Thanks guys.
PPMD, I've recently started playing melee and enjoy Falco and really enjoy watching you play. I saw a post somewhere in which you said something about regretting your character choice; does this mean that you wish you had picked a character other than Falco if you could do it over again?
