nah that's not a good idea. it encourages more Em talk and ignores other great white rappers like Slug
And the Beastie Boys and 3rd Bass. For how famous they are, I'm surprised the Beastie Boys always seem to be forgotten when people discuss notable white rappers. Brother Ali is also a fairly notable white rapper.

Oh, and don't forget the GOAT, AESOP ROCK!!!!!!!

Joe Budden is always either underrated or overrated. Opinions on Budden are way too bipolar. People either think he's the GOAT or completely insignificant. IMO he's good but not great.

Started listening to more Brother Ali....cause he's so relatable ;3
Whatcha Got is definitely my favorite song by him. I also really like Uncle Sam Goddamn.

I'm going to sit back and see how this goes.

But I'll just quote Joe.

You're now hearing the greatest of all time
Well maybe not all, just mine.
Maybe that opinion is nobody's at all, just mine
But I'm coppin albums and I'm bored, they just rhyme.

Didn't say it was mind blowing or impressive. Like Matador said I just felt it was relevant to the debate.

There's differing opinions on him, fair enough. But the majority of artists that people claim to be better aren't putting out/haven't put out anything better than Joe's best material imo. Like Joe said, they bore me.

If Joe bores you, fair enough. But I think if you listen to Joe's top ~30/40 songs and say he is 'mediocre' then I'd say you're being very harsh. Forget sales, impact and all that, judge the music. The rest is secondary. Joe is a great MC.

Again, you guys are being way too bipolar. It's not like any rapper has to be either "top 20" or "mediocre". I think he's good, NOT mediocre, but at the same time, NOT top 20. I mean, saying top 20 is essentially saying you think he's a brilliantly talented MC who has had a significant impact on the game. For example, my #20 MC on my "top MCs all time list" is Andre 3000, and other rappers in the vicinity are Big Pun, Pharoahe Monch, GZA, LL Cool J, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Black Thought, etc. So while I don't think Budden belongs with that company, he's certainly not "mediocre". Does this clear it up?

Which brings us to the point, will we even have another MC who will have "significant impact" on the game again? Honestly when people say that I don't really take that for much credibility because look at what game we have now. -_-

I'm talking about spitting, artistically, lyrically. When it comes to this game with any type of commercialism, selling or much to do with the game itself I don't take that into consideration because honestly it's not exactly that eyebrow raising.

Although I do see your point with them influencing artists after them but I don't really see many new artists with Big Pun influenced flow, Talib Kweli's spitting or Andre's creativity.

With the exception of Kanye, when it comes to creativity and artistry who can you honestly say has been influenced? (Wanting many names for this)

For Andre 3000, here's some people that have listed Outkast as one of their influences:
Kanye West
Lil' Wayne
Kidz in the Hall
Janelle Monae
Nappy Roots
Fonzworth Bentley

People who listed Big Pun as an influence:
Jedi Mind Tricks
Flo Rida
Soulstice
Termanology
Garcia
Delinquent
Remy Ma
(and like every latino rapper since him)

People who listed Talib Kweli as an influence:
Madcon
Skyzoo
Danny!
Super Chron Flight Brothers
Time
Repeat Offenders
Penn the God

These are just some that I found while doing a little searching.

And influence isn't just people taking parts of their style from you. It's also about other rappers considering you a legend, quoting you, etc. which is true for all of these rappers.

Of course, overall, skill should certainly the main factor in determining the best MC. But if you're judging just based on pure skill, you have to look at guys like Tech N9ne, Ras Kass, O.C., Canibus, etc. Many things, including influence, factor into being one of the "best" MCs.

I haven't heard of a majority of those artists but for some like Lil Wayne and Flo Rida... do you really wanna put those up there? lol

I see your point though.

@MBlaze: theres plenty of artists that are up there... but nobody knows about them really, and if they do they dont know all of their stuff. i mean i KNOW yall have heard of Blu, Fashawn, Kendrick Lamar, etc but its not like yall look into their discography and listen to hella of their stufff. for example, i have 19 albums/mixtapes/EP's by Blu, 10 albums/mixtapes by Fashawn (and i listen to most of the songs and know the pretty much all the lyrics to Boy Meets World, and for Kendrick Lamar, well i know his mixtape, his LP, and another mixtape that i just got that im listening to.... you just gotta look out for good stuff now. instead of letting it come to you. and nothing is really gonna influence people until people let eachother know about sick *** stuuff. and eventually people like fashawn, kendrick lamar, blu, etc are gonna be liked by both commercial and underground divisons of the Hip Hop community similar to (currently) Jay-Z, J. Cole, Wale etc

Yeah, it's a sad thing really. I wish the talent in our genre was as easy to identify as the others..

another thing i dont like about the genre is how there's two extreme sides of Hip Hop. one is the really commercial stuff that is always on the radio, and theres the other side where its only underground stuff with artists like Immortal Technique and stuff, who only have a lot of vocabulary and say stuff like "im so sick", "im doper than blahblahblah", etc. And the majority of fans listen EXCLUSIVELY to either side of the spectrum without listnening to something inbetween it liike J. Cole, Fashawn, Blu, etc. People that are underground but still heard of, and they dont rap about how real they are or dope they are, but they just RAP and its dope. They dont needa claim to be dope, feelmee? & on either side of the spectrum all the heads that listen to that kind of stuff are like Democrats and Republicans, their tastes are completely opposite but their views are exactly the same, only saying that theyre dope and the other side is wack. and the people in the middle are like this club track is hot, this underground joint is dope, this old school is sick, this neww stuff is raw.

Exactly how I feel. I wish some artist would just come out and have the best of both worlds. I think it's possible for someone to have mainstream appeal at the same time as underground lyrics/skills. Most of all, lots of modern rappers seem to have lost the fun. Earlier MCs just seemed to have a lot more fun than MCs now. People think they have to make all this serious music to be taken seriously. Look at Eminem. Dude had a perfect blend of funny songs with troubled ones in SSLP and MMLP, but now he's too serious. He seems to have lost the "fun" aspect. And I think it shows in his music.

You know what would be dope? Having an annual "State of Hip Hop" meeting where all the MCs of all kinds, old and new, got together and figured out how to make the best hip hop music. And it would lead to some sick collaborations. Unfortunately it's not possible since a lot of MCs hate each other.

Yeah, it's all whiny matches and defending honor and superficial **** like that. I think that's better though; people probably learned from what happened to 2pac and Biggie that real beef is not good.

wait wha? lol, demos and reps have different views... thats why ones a democrat and ones a republican haha.

but for the most part i agree with you post.

and yeah, i'm one of those people in the middle. i love ALL facets of hiphop. i know a quality emcee when i hear one. but at the same time i really like hiphop that can make you move, or that hits hard, or that gets you hype. which is what allows me to like artists like gucci, waka, soula boy, etc.
