I haven't read the topic but:

If you haven't unlocked everything, you have no business playing Smash online againts random people :p Although, battling friends you know through online, thats very diffrent.

I could care less. I'm the type of person that picks up a game guide(I.E. Zelda TP) and looks in the back.

I just can say that having online play as the last unlockable will piss off half of the world.

I like the idea, but there will be LOOTS of people who will want to play online right after they press start.

This will piss off just too mnay customers.

Wi-Fi in itself will be a suprise, I think. If you go online and see a character like Sonic, Rockman, or Geno and then get completely owned by said character, it will make you want to go unlock that character immediately. In my opinion it would be a glorified "challenger approaching" tag.

As for online to be a quick way to unlock everything; I say Sakurai will not be that stupid. Most of the fun of Melee came from unlocking everything and exploring every part of the game. Also, some people (like myself) will want to become familiar with any new mechanics and get reasonably good with a character or two before going online. Of course, playing against stronger opponents is the fastest way to grow as a player, so...

I had an Idea. What if after you beat someone who uses a hidden char you get challenger appeoaching. However I can't think of a way to stop people to use it unlock characters fast.

I've never liked having a game spoiled for me, but I take smash so seriously, I would love to delve into the conversation surrounding the new game's physics and new tricks you can do. The thing is, I know that if I continue going on SWF after the game has been released, I'll be bombarded with all the hidden info. Sigs will display secret characters, and people will talk about them, but I wouldn't want the surprise spoiled just the same. ERGH!!! I'm torn! :urg:

Well, given I'm European and we're not getting Brawl 'till some undetermined point of 2008, I'm going to be spoiled anyway, since I really, really doubt I'll be able to muster enough wilpower to refrain from visiting the Dojo or Smashboards. Which sucks, because I really like that "...who the hell is that?" feeling in the CHALLENGER APPROACHING! screen (could barely believe my eyes when I first saw Mewtwo in Melee). But I guess I'll be able to, at least, try to guess how each one is unlocked.

But I'd personally prefer that you didn't get the whole screen just by going online. I want to deserve each and every one of my combatants, and fight my way through every single event and adventure if necessary. Also, the whole "ZOMG! THAT guy's in the game?!" moment when you face someone using a hidden character you don't have will probably be just a tiny bit shy from the thrill of the "CHALLENGER APPROACHING!" screen.

Think. You're a n00b. You go online short after buying the game, wanting to try fighting actual people. And suddenly, on the other side of the Bridge you see a bigass purple dragon, which, before you can shake the "What's that thing? Wait, is that Ridley?! OMG yes yesss!!!" feeling, rushes towards you and eats you. You have certainly had quite a nice moment of discovery, which would not be half as good just in an aseptic character screen.

I'm not going online until I see someone posts on Smashboards like an ok thing where online doesn't show all the characters. But I may need more than a n00b saying it's ok. If it isn't I won't go online until i'm sure i've got all the characters, or atleast the ones I won't.

well heres an idea, maybe the online capability will be by servers and you can only acess some servers if you unlocked the secret characters (they won't be named) and stages. that way alot of the game won't be spoiled and people can still play online.

I've only played DOA online.. and I guess I'm with the idea of only letting the person that unlocked it use that character.

Ex: Your opponents unlocked.. say... G&W and you didn't. Its a ??? on your screen but they can still choose him..

I guess its a bit unfair in someways.. But it won't unlock everything and show off everything that you want to work for.

Wowwwwww nobody has suggested the MPH formula(metroid prime hunters). If you dont have this said character/stage and go online find someone who has the unlocked character/stage you dont have. play that person who does and guess what you just unlocked that character/stage

It should be like Mario Kart DS.

You go online and only other people who already the other characters unlocked are allowed to allow to play as the secret characters.

Like when I first hopped online I saw Daisy, which wasn't in my roster yet... It will ruin some of the gameplay but you can avoid it if you like.

Mario Strikers isn't really revolved around the characters, it's about the gameplay. With Smash Bros, it's about both. I'm sure the team at HAL Labs will make a way to work their way around this little bug. If not... I laugh at all the people who will be disappointed (inculding myself XD)

I think the best solution would be to have two kinds of online modes... One with just the basic characters and stages, and the other with everything unlocked. That way beginners could play the first and once you've unlocked everything you could play the second.

Nothing says this game will even be online. I mean it got a release date during E3 but when Reggie talked about the online games for wii, Brawl was notoriously absent.

Wow that's something interesting to bring up. I've actually given this a thought before and I promised myself that I won't play online until I have every character and atleast ONE stage like Final Destination.

That would take a serious amount of resources and time. Why wouldn't anyone want to do the single player mode (which nintendo confirmed will actually have the storylines correlating (( i know what?)) ) but still, nothing was cooler then the "new challenger" screen with the music. If you wanna get pwned online, i think people should have that option, because, let's face, there's gonna be those set of people out there that play the game for the title rather then the enjoyment. Or those that would rather cheat their way through just to "impress" their friends. The seriously loyal and brawl-thirsty players will unlock everything and master what they feel fits them best.

If it's an online compatible game, however, wouldn't they have the ability to fix those features over time, even with the game out? Also, couldn't they just add characters or stages whenever they wanted? Brawl truely has more potential then melee, we just have to hope they don't mess things up.

Im not really bothered about knowing the roster before I unlock everything as I live in Australia, so by the time the game comes out here I would know it all ready by going on this site. Soooo im not too fussed.

Within 8,000 miles of you, unless you're in space.
I think the best way to do this is the way Metroid Prime Hunters did. If you beat someone online who has a character you don't, you unlock him. If you suck too much to get the character in the first place, there's no way you're beating the person who did unlock him/her/it. Stages could be the same, I guess. Win a game on a stage you don't have (your opponent would have to pick or randomly get it I guess) and you get it.

The problem with the MPH system (you beat it, you get it) is that it'd be possible, although potentially unlikely, to unlock things in the wrong order. For example, you unlock Flat Zone before you see Mr. Game & Watch, or you unlock Tails before Sonic (hopefully not, but it's a good example).

I don't like the MPH thing. If you get online, you know you might see a secret character or stage. Its your fault if you do.

Unlocking Characters is like a tradition in smash like Chrismas. You have two general choices: 1 wait like a nice kid until its time or 2. spoil the surprise and risk getting spanked!

Heres one way to view it, if your too crap to the game...
...the game will be too crap to you!

Online is a privilage not a right you must earn it! =P
Screw that... Once I get used to Brawl's Yoshi I'm going straight to online battles due to a severe lack of local smash buddies. I can unlock everything later... If you encounter a character you haven't unlocked yet online, big deal, you still don't have access to it and you could find out a list of all of them by going on the internet anyway.

Anyway, I doubt they would let something like what happened in Strikers happen in Brawl. It would make a lot of the game pointless if everything was instantly unlocked.

Nope, its actualy 1 Secret Character/Stage per week AFTER its released.
That's not true at all...there is going to be daily weekday updates until the December 3rd release. You think they can maintain daily releases without revealing all the characters?
