Amidst all of the bad news, Nintendo needs to generate more hype for the Wii U ASAP. So far, all we know is that after Tropical Freeze, there will be no notable first party game released until Mario Kart 8 in May. That's an awfully long time, March only has Yoshi's New Island for 3DS, and nothing has been confirmed for April. Smash probably won't get a release date until E3. For now, all we can do is pay attention to Sakurai's Twitter feed because apparently he likes to let people know in advance that he has prepared a major reveal for the Direct.
Meanwhile, North America needs a release date for Kirby Triple Deluxe and the new Mario Golf game. There are also announced games for the Wii U that we have had very little information on for over a year now: Yarn Yoshi, X, and Fire Emblem x Shin Megami Tensei.
So I think there will be a Direct this month because they tend to be bimonthly and the 3DS and Wii U install base need more than Mario Kart and Smash to look forward to for this year.
