Now that people will be able to play online against eachother whenever they want, do you guys think that people will still host tournies and travel miles and miles for tournies. i hope so, because i think that helps bring the smash community(whether it be friends or rivals) closer together. im sorry if that sounds "gay". i hope that online capability doesnt stop people entirely from getting together, or stop EVO or MLG from picking up Brawl on their agenda. DISCUSS. thanks for your opinions.

Yes, They will. WiFi will not work that great due to lag and such. And even if it did, people still like the personal contact and trash talking.

Yes.

The feeling of being in person and being "online" is completely different.

And after all, who doesn't like the trash talking and the 'OOOOOOHHHHH!"s of the crowd when you get an awesome combo off? =]

Honestly, I don't think it will lag that badly, I know Mario Striker's Charged has no lag, at all, and is over Wi-Fi, and you get to choose who's connection you want to play, on a scale of 1-4 stars, 4 stars being "a perfect connection."

Most deffinately in person tournaments will still be very popular. Nothing compares to the organization and human contact of in person events. Even if there was a way to make it work, nothing beats the fact that everyone is together watching, playing, and socializing.

I plan to do both. Below is an online tournament idea I've been working on for a while with some friends... let me know what you think please.

That's reassuring

Also, my friends and I have small tournaments here and there, which I'm sure we're not the only ones, and judging by the tournament brackets on the Dojo we'll be getting together.

On the other hand Wi-Fi does save gas, and I do love the environment(not to mention I'm lazy) so I will definitely be playing online rather than driving 15 minutes for those less than a couple hour duels.

No lag at all?
I laugh at you.

practice online.
play in person.

QFT. Online will be a great way to train, but when every frame counts you MUST meet in person. Plus, it's way more fun.

people will definitely still travel. believe it or not, it is much more of a hassle to put together an online tournament than it is to gather up and have one in person.

also, everyone has friends from all over and im sure they dont wanna lose that.

I think there will be both online and non-online tournaments, with the non-online ones being money matches, while the online tournaments will be more casual, user run tournaments for those that absolutely can't travel for whatever reason (people like me).

Brawl online for Mother Earth!!
Al Gore would be proud of you, Steve. It'll be awesome to smash without waiting for you to come over.

All popular online fighting/FPS games still have tournaments. Even World of Warcraft has tournaments.

I expect Smash to be the same.

Well, I dont' think it'll lag all that much. Look at it this way.
Wifi is basically using a controller that is very far away.
If you have an itnernet connection faster per frame than the information output of a controller in the same amount of time, then the lag is minute, if any. Depending on exactly how sensitive your controller is, there is more or less data output. You input with the controller, which is transmitted to your wii and shared with the other consoles. There is very little data transmitted: 5 or 6 binary digits for the button, and 20 or so more for the analog. This is a very small amount. The data is sent and your wii translates it in the same way a second players Gamecube contoller sends input to your gamecube which reads it as movement for someone else. Sicne there's so little information being sent, it takes virtually no time to send it and decode it. Imagine that instead of you fighting someone, you're fighting a CPU who deos the same thing as your opponent. Sorry if it's hard to understand.

Shiny Ivysaur, you are quite confused. It's not the amount of data being sent that affects lag: it's the time it takes for the data to get from your Wii to someone else's Wii.

The data packets have to travel through hundreds of miles of wire, but the greatest creator of lag is the routers that the data goes through. It takes time to figure out where a packet of data needs to go and to send it there.

Lag can end up being over a second when you're sending data around the world. Between the East and West Coasts, there is about 150-300 milliseconds of lag.

Yes, wifi is bare bones and even if it was as good as XBL people would still host tournaments.

Of course. Lagless play, social gatherings, and money will drive players to go to tournaments. Halo 2 has Xbox Live, and it has tournaments. You should stop worrying about this.

Look at DOA4, that's got virtually lag free online (for me anyway) with voice chat and lobbys and lots of options. People still go to DOA tournaments though.

super champ combo was so EPIC. and a very good reason why the smahs tournament community will never ever die.

its the same as halo. people could stay at home and play halo 3 all the time, but they go to an actual tournament to compete where it matters.

and plus, how do you even know you are playing the actual person online? for example. hey manacloud do you want to play? oh wow, i didn't know you and ken played so much alike >.> (but whose to say manacloud wont be better in brawl, this was just an easy to see example.)

people will be doing that stuff all the time.

With all the people playing from different locations, lag will be inevitable.

I'm sure that no SERIOUS tournaments will be held online.

What's the point of this thread? Brawl certainly isn't the only game that exists with online play and a large following for live tournaments. You need only look as far as Halo.
