Will names be a hindrance?

I kind of skimmed the first page, and I didn't see anyone else make a topic like this, so I hope no one minds....

Hmmm. It seems that names will be pretty important if you have to have one in order to not reconfigure a button setting every time. Maybe if some default controller setting is pretty good it won't matter so much, but anyway, here is my concern.

In Melee, there are at least two characters I can think of who performed better without a name tag: Zelda and Mewtwo. This had to do with mind games, and not betraying your location when teleporting. As a Zelda player, I never play with a name tag on. However, in Brawl it sounds as though I might have no reasonable choice not to.

Who knows whether or not Zelda will even have a similar up+B, or if any characters will have moves affected by being forced to have a name tag, but I'd hate for name tags to serve as a kind of limitation this time around. Maybe there won't be any name hovering above your character's head or, heck, if Zelda does teleport in a way similar to how she does in Melee, the tag could at least disappear for the duration of the teleport!

Anyway, did anyone else even consider this name-necessity announcement as a possible limitation? I suppose a lot of people don't play as the two Melee characters that are mostly affected by name tags, but who knows what new characters would be limited by this.

If your character were affected, would you reconfigure your button settings every game, or would you accept the limitation of the name tag (assuming choosing a name implies a name tag).

Heh, I guess you guys haven't dealt with Zelda's legendary up+B lag, where if your opponent knows EXACTLY where you are landing, then you are screwed. Also, I'm a daughter, not a son :)

He said that YOU have a name and your CHARACTER has a name,,,

The characters name will float above, and your name will be for settings/online records..

So, just name your character " "

Meh, it doesn't say anywhere that they name HAS to appear over your head so there's no need to start complaining already =P.

I use sheik and she has the same problem with her up+B. Maybe they can just make it so the name tags disappear when you do.

I think the nametags also show up above you when you pick up a cloaking device, which kinda ruins it (cept for the no-dmg part).

ZOMGS, there are girls on the internet??

Yeah, a disapearing nametag makes good sense :)

And yes, girls on the internet, well, pm ihavespaceballs to discuss the reality of it >_>

Yeah the disappearing name tag would in fact be the perfect solution (I mentioned it in post 1). Also, I actually haven't played with items in a while, but I do remember that the cloaking device was pretty useless, as far as stealth went, with a name tag on (and even without a name tag at times), plus if you were doing 1-P the computers had no problem "seeing" you at all.

Like I said, I don't know if setting a name requires the appearance of an actual name TAG (did he say so one way or the other?), but it was just a thought. Not to say it's the end of the world for me :-) (Me reading the update: "Oh, woe is me, how could these soulless *******s require the use of a name tag!?!?") :-P

I find the use of nametags rather obtrusive. As a Zelda/Sheik user I don't appreciate the nametag immediately revealing my landing point after before the Up+B's even come out. It also interferes with recoveries from below levels with pass-through floors, as it also reveals your location. There's also the obvious matter of the cloaking device.

If you don't think nametags had the potential to be problematic, you just weren't thinking outside the box.

I hope there isn't name tags.
Because I also play as Zelda (Sheik most of the time) , and when I use sheik, my friend uses Mewtwo because neither of these two chars are our mains, so we make it interesting. But it starts to get frustrating with name tags when me and him both know where eachother is going to teleport to...so eventually we deleted all the names rofl.

How 'bout this? For the characters that turn invisible at some point, you just don't use a name tag.

But now name tags carry your control preferences, so it would be crappy for those who wanna use invisibility moves.

What bothers me is that it looks like you are still limited to only four letters. I still can't be Keige! I guess I'll just resort to being Billychu, but in Japanese.

The only problem I could see, as far as adjusting controller settings without a name tag, and maybe they'll find a way around this, is that the controller setting will either A) be set for the controller slot, or B) apply to everyone. :-?

BTW: Hi Elana!! ^_^

You could put Angl. Tho that kinda looks like Angle. :ohwell:

I can fit my name (alan) but I also use my initials from time to time.

Personally, I doubt most of you will need to screw around too much with the default control settings. They give you four choices. Chances are one of them will work for you right out of the box...

Not if removing up+jumping is an option. Heck, that would almost be worth having a nametag kill my up_B mindgames. Hopefully they just let you have a name without a nametag.

I think they'd be a "hinderance" if they're allowed to become too big. I don't wanna be fighting "SUPERAWESOMETOTALLYCOOLSMASHPLAYERWHOISGONNAPWNYOURFACEOFFLOL" and have his name mess with my gameplay. I hope and strongly believe that the names are only 4 characters long again, because that works fine.

Of course, my name is four characters long exactly (Dr.C), so I'm kinda biased.

or (i don't think he will do this) maybe he will add a option so when you turn invisible your name tag dissapears while you teleport or turn invisble.

I really doubt that will happen

if ur a sheik player who isn't affected by the nametags, either you suck or your friends do because the nametag ruins anything you try to do with your upB

I hate to break it to you guys, but I would rather experience the coolness that is my name above my character than have it disappear to please the 5% hardcore minority of Zelda users.

Sheik is cheap anyways, I hope Zelda can't become her in Melee.

Dude, that absolutley, by no means, gets rid of the chances of a name tag.

I hope you can toggle it on and off. And, while the name tag thing only mostly affects Zelda, Sheik, and Mewtwo (don't know if I'm forgetting any others) FOR NOW, there may be new characters who would play better without a name tag as well. Like I tried to say before, this whole name tag thing isn't the end of the world, or of Brawl, one way or the other for me, but it is a potential issue I have pondered.

He actually has a valid point..one of my friends plays zelda and it definitly matters.

I figure even if you make your name a blank space, then there'll still be an empty name tag box with an arrow pointing at you, floating over your head. Who can be sure, though.

... Very true, never thought of that >_<

But hopefully this won't be a problem, because they will make the nametag disapear while you are gone!
