Will names be a hindrance?

Sheik is cheap anyways, I hope Zelda can't become her in Melee.
Since when has this devolved into a Sheik-bashing thread? Ah, well.

Do gamer tags really hinder one's mindgames when it comes to the "invisibility" based B-moves? Usually, good players will anticipate where you are going to end up anyway and react based on that. I'm far from being pro, but I can keep tabs on where characters like Zelda and Mewtwo are gonna go when they Up-B. Zelda's Up-B (don't hurt me Elana) is lag-tastic, and the camera pans a certain way to follow you along. As it does, well, you can see when Zelda's gonna pop back up again and respond appropriately. She's very slow going in and out of the teleport. Mewtwo's Up-B is a little more difficult, considering that it's quicker. Some people make the mistake of teleporting to the ground with Mewtwo rather than above it, so 9 times out of 10 somebody's gonna charge in and punish you for the lag.

Just my thoughts.

I hope the name tag doesn't appear during the entire match. It seems more irritating than anything else. But since we've seen gameplay without it,I presume it is optional.

If your character were affected, would you reconfigure your button settings every game, or would you accept the limitation of the name tag (assuming choosing a name implies a name tag).
Yea, if they still follow then they will be quite a hindrance for characters with a teleporting up b. But if I decide I want a different controller configuration, And not having a name above my head helps my game play, i'll probablly reconfigure every time.

Thanks for being the first to answer that question, Zodiac!

Smooth Criminal: Yup, it's definitely lag-tastic, but I don't think the camera betrays your location as much as you think. I've been able to keep many a Falco at bay through such trickery, and also people who like to play 'runaway and spam projectiles' get thrown off because they don't know whether I'm coming at them, going the other way entirely, or heck, maybe not moving at all. :) But they often try to rush me where they think I'm gonna be, because of the lag they're expecting, and when I'm in fact not where they think I will be that's an opening to hit em.

Being a good player doesn't necessarily make you a mind reader, especially when your opponent is good at mixing it up. :)

Also, I don't know if this is different in a version of Melee aside from version 1.0, but if you land on the ground without going the full distance of the teleport (i.e. angle it at least slightly so you don't go as far as possible) the lag isn't very severe at all and you can get your shield up basically right away, so I can land right next to someone, who will try to rush me or aerial attack me, and I will still have time to get the shield up and go for the shield grab. If my opponent is grab-happy and likes to grab after the teleport, I can sidestep dodge instead.

First off, I wanna mention that I forgot about Zelda's ability to cut some of the lag out of her teleport by angling it above the ground. I forgot that her and Mewtwo shared that ability, respectively. Thanks for bringing that up. >.>; I can be a total dunce sometimes.

You provide a strong argument here, one that I can't really dispute. Yeah, teleporting can be a good mindgame (a very good one) but it's very situational and risky---in my opinion. If you can get it to work, great---more power to you and your game. Just boils down to different styles that exist between us, I guess.

I think everything about playing Zelda well is situational and risky. That's why people just switch to Sheik :) In any case, hopefully there won't be so much lag to circumvent in Brawl Zelda's teleport (if she has one still). But anyway, I don't wanna ostracize the non-Zelda players in this thread anymore. However, there is a bit of uncertainty as to whether the other two teleporters (Sheik and Mewtwo) will even be in the game, so it's hard not to focus on Zelda. :p Although some as yet unannounced character might also have some disappearing, mind-gaming type ability.

Note the underlined text, Ms. Elana.

I RESEMBLE THAT REMARK!

Lol.

It is very easy to focus on Zelda when it comes to this topic, considering that she's confirmed for Brawl and many, many people have the idea that she may have the teleporting move. It isn't so much "ostracizing" as it is citing relevant speculation (yes, there is such a thing).
