Miss you Ryan
I would jsut like to get some feedback from the community;
What are your oppinions on longevity of Melee in light of Brawls impending release? Will the Melee tournament scene fizzle or will it survive?

naturally there will still be people who prefer melee over brawl and contintue to play it exclusively juust like with ssb and melee. I personally though melee was a good game but that it paled in comparison to the 64 version so i still play that. I'm planning on playing brawl exclusively when it comes out because overall i expect there will be more brawl players than melee

It might rely solely on what kind of advanced tactics they add/remove to Brawl.

If they remove wavedashing and the like, there very well may be two ongoing player bases, as I'm sure some players would prefer to play with and some would prefer to play without. Some players might prefer playing with Melee's roster as well, if certain characters get removed from Brawl.

If they build on the Melee system - repeating and improving upon the advanced techniques, it would probably be safe to assume that Brawl would completely replace Melee.

It's probably a little early to tell, it might be better to judge once we have more information - specifically gameplay info.

Like they said, it depends on your preferences. Me? Even if Brawl takes out my fave character, I'll still play it more, and I'll probably stop playing Melee till I have too. It all depends really.

I DON'T KNOW!!!
The people that will play melee are the ones that dont have a wii lol
I have the Wii & a copy of Zelda TP that I have yet to touch because I just started to get back into Melee... (After my town game store FINALLY got enough pepole to support monthly tournaments)

That said, though I know just like the original there will still be pepole who play Melee... In my experience, tournament play will stop on a large scale on or at best a few weeks after Brawls release...

Melee will join the ranks of countless games near & dear to our harts... Siting on our bookshelf's for the soil point of strolling down memory lain every once in a while...

It's a said fate but not a bad one... Progress is progress... No matter what direction it might be in... :psycho:

In my opinion people will still play Melee for about a couple of months after Brawl's release. And after they all get used to Brawl's way of playing Melee will surely be just a great memory! Of course some will still play it as some still play the N64 version but that will be just the minority!

I will stop playing melee, along with everyone else (except those who can't handle the advanced techniques that will be in brawl such as wavecancelling) once Brawl comes out.

im with the idea that there will be a split between melee and brawl players. probably in the first couple months ssbb comes out everyone will be playing brawl to see how it plays out and the ppl that dont like it will just continue playing melee. as long as they dont take out ganon ill be happy.

It's not so much about what WE the players want as it is where the developers, stores, & event host want to lead us...

If they stop hosting Melee events & start to spam Brawl left & right, then it's only a matter of time before Melee is treated like a distant memory...

It would take close to 50% of all smash fans to hold there ground for Melee in order for large scale tournaments to stay around... (Providing for whatever resin we don't end up liking Brawl)

Sadly despite just how many smash fans there are, the total amount of hardcore tournament level players out there is probably (And I'm being optimistic here) 20% or less...

If they exclude things like wavedashing & even L-canceling in Brawl... Well... The average fan really won't care & would prefer to play Brawl simply because of the better picture & sound quality...

Tournament host only care what the guest want wean it effects the outcome of an event & how much they will make off it...

Hell that said, excluding things like wavedashing might actually get n00bs who have all but given up on going to such events to actually return to the gaming seine...

3 New customers for every 1 pissed off pro is still enough of an incentive to make Brawl the norm at tournament events...

And where likely talking about 6-8 for every 1... And that's still providing the games lacking compared to Melee...

Sorry... From where I stand Melee's time is limited... :(

Depends entirely upon how competitive the game can be. People still play Smash Bros. 64 because they like it better, so it will never fully die, but if Brawl can't keep a competitive community alive with skillful and dynamic gameplay, then Melee will live on as the competition favorite.

I don't know what your all griping about, My buddies and I just got back into 64 Smash! Melee won't die, if anything its just going to evolve to brawl! thats basically what 64 smash did! and that $hit is hella fun! but everyone has there own oppion on things, so those that stop playing completly will just be missing out on there past, there roots you could say ^_^ and I'm sure even new coming to the smash world will want to at one point look back at where it all started and possibly play some good ole' school smash.

p.s. TOAD FOR BRAWL!!!!!!!!

T_T after that ps I feel no ones going to take me serious anymore lol

[Edit] does anyone know what happened to my sig, I cant see it O.o;;

Level 9: The percentage of hardcore tournament players for Melee (vs. Smash fans) is 20%?! So 1 out of every 5 Smash fans goes to tournaments? Wow, I wasn't aware there were 800,000-ish tournament players!

I'd say that number is much closer to 0.1% (1 out of every 1000), even if you're being as optimistic as possible. :)

People will still play Melee for a bit after Brawl (those stubborn people who refuse to let go of their Melee habits and embrace a new game), and people will still play it for nostalgia's sake every so often (like with 64), but I'm sure 3 months after Brawl is out, the proportion of Brawl to Melee tournaments will be insanely high. Remember, tournaments are the MOST fun when no one really knows what they're doing. It lets people come through and prove their mettle, form early tier lists, and have a blast.

Though, the fact that Melee is playable on Wii, via backwards compatibility, will help its longevity quite substantially. People won't have to break out an old console and (presumably) old controllers. It's just another disc on the shelf.

I dunno I feel that Brawl will most likely take over. I have yet to meet a person in my life who says they play SSB over Melee since Melee was released (granted I don't hang out with hardcore gamers.)
The new generally always replaces the old is what I've always thought.

This is some pretty good discussion. In my oppinion, I agree with a few of you that say it all depends on the advanced techniques that stay or are added. I'm only disappointed because I've had SSBM since it's release, but have only just been able to travel for tournaments. If Brawl takes over, I pray it has a tournament scene to it as well. Online will be nice, but I'd rather actually go to a tournament anyday.

It will be like now: Melee is what we mostly play but people still play SSB 64.

So its like Brawl will become Melee and Melee will become SSB 64.

The only advanced techniques I could see them maybe taking off is wavedashing or jumping out of your shine. I highly doubt that they will take these elements out, however. In such a case, I think Melee will go the way of SSB. Isai still plays 64, though, even today, and he owns at it, but he also plays Melee.

Brawl will almost definatly end Melee. Just think. We're INFO MAD and we still have MONTHS before the game comes out. When it comes out, no matter if the graphics we're 8 bit, hard core brawlers will still play this game. Lets not worry though until it comes out.. okay?

SSB 64 still has a loyal fanbase even this far after the release of Melee. It will likely be the smae way when Brawl is released.
SSBM is still appealing after 5 years because of the room for improvement. Advanced techniques, new combos, and strategies all kept Melee fresh. This also led to Melee becoming very competitive. The same thing will probably happen with Brawl. For the first few months, everything will go as the developers designed. Then, as in Melee, dedicated Smashers will discover new things.
Will Brawl ever be as successful as Melee? My guess is yes. Sakurai and his team are very aware of what made Melee successful, and will improve that in Brawl.
Personally I will be playing Brawl when it comes out way more than i will play Melee. I think that Brawl will have the same lasting appeal that Melee has.

You bring up a good point. Brawl can easily wipe the floor withe Melee if Sakurai does it right.

to add to your point, I think that more people will be playing brawl, if only for a little while, just because of the fact that almost everything has been discovered in melee, I say almost because odds are there is still SOMETHING that might be new that could totally tip the scale but the odds of that are slim.

People will be looking for new things in brawl, just like they did with melee. Even if they don't actually find anything, odds are they'll still play the game just because it's new and refreshing to have a new setting then what we've had for the past 5 years. Hence why people are so hungry for new info is because they're excited about all the new content. If Sakurai is going to go all out on this (and I think he is, just look at how many people he's got on the music team alone) then I think that brawl will replace melee no matter if they take wavedashing out or the like, just because people will love the game so much. Granted I don't think that melee will be replaced for good, since if brawl is just that drastically different (kind of like how melee was to 64) then people will still want to mess around in melee for a time. Sorry for the essay practically, but thats just my 2 cents

I doubt Melee will end for at least a year. Everyone will want to try Brawl before settling in on what is more comfortable. Because of the fact that Brawl is supposed to be slowed down a little, 64 players might move onto it as well as people like me who want new characters and levels. But I believe some people will stay with Melee, especially if Brawl is a lot different.

very, very good point. I just hope that ssbm doesn't completly die out. Don't get me wrong, when brawl comes out thats all im going to be playing, its just that i like the idea of a split fanbase because of the fact that some characters are cut (hopefully NOT ganon).

Why thank you. I love cookies.

To expand a bit, I don't think that Melee will completely die out, as SSB64 never totally died out. Still, 64 was never as huge of a success as SSBM. I'm sure that some people will not like the changes in Brawl, and will stay loyal to Melee. And since it's likely that Brawl will not just be an updated Melee, there will be new features to like or dislike. Just like how some 64 players didn't like the spot-dodging, advanced throwing, B ->'ing ways of Melee, some Melee players will not want to adjust to Brawl.
Yet, even though I absolutely love Melee, a change of pace after 5 years will be nice. Final Destination has been etched into my brain, so it will be refreshing to play new characters on new stages. The real question is: A few years after its release, will Brawl still be fresh. My money's on yes.

That's pretty much exactly what I was saying... Only you where focusing on the fans as apposed to the tournament event host side of it... Where I live we only have one small hole in the wall shop that's as quick to change as possible in order to attract the maximum number of customers...

I guess that's not how most of the tournament seine works then...

True is that... In fact I'm playing Melee right now that way...

People still play Street Fighter 2. People still play Marvel VS Capcom 1. People still play Smash Bros on the N64.

People will still play Melee when Brawl comes out.

This is akin to asking "When Spiderman 4 comes out, will anyone watch the old Spiderman movies anymore?" Of course they will. Even if something is old, it's a different experience, and there will always be people who prefer that experience to the new one. If anything, Brawl will entice new, younger players who may eventually get curious about Melee. And since the Wii can play Gamecube games, and they might already be using a GC controller(theoretically), they're only $20 away from a different gaming experience. Brawl will cause a fundamental shift in the community similar to the 64->Melee shift, but that doesn't mean the old games will be left behind.

If anything, Melee's sales will increase slightly.
