Event - E3 Invitational 2014 Why are people expecting so much info about Smash from E3?

But when they revealed the characters playable in the tournement and quite possibly the demo, there were no new comers or veterans. What if there are no character reveals D: :urg:
The playable demo and tournament are not using the latest version of the game, certain characters are probably not finished as of current. There is no correlation between having a limited demo and no reveals at e3. This is the biggest gaming event of the year, we are going to get a character reveal. Do not worry about that. Smash has been treated well in regards to e3 in the past, I doubt that is going to change now.

We got 3 newcomers at E3. 1 newcomer, and 4 veterans at the direct. No, I'll expect alot.
NEWCOMERS:
- Pac-Man
- Miis
- Palutena
VETERANS
- Ness
- Captain Falcon
- Falco
- Wario
- Ice Climbers
- Ganon
- Meta Knight
- Mr. Game & Watch

+Exact Release dates, and more info about possible items & stages.
I think captain falcon and ness will be unlockable characters.

Isn't Smash going to be in one big, hour long video? If so, they might have a lot of games to put in, so we can't get a lot of time devoted to Smash.
Well there's still
1. The whole E3 session as a whole
2. The tournament
3. There's going to be a Demo - This'll have endless info
4. Other times to announce stuff
5. A Q&A thing for journalists (Though it's possible we just get stupid Q's) just to say a few

Also the fact that the games are coming out soon and this is Nintendo's biggest thing for the rest of the year. I think all that on it's own is reason enough.

To be honest, all I'm expecting is a newcomer, specific release dates, and maybe talk about new/returning game modes.

We already have a pretty darn solid starting roster, they're not just gonna reveal every character before release.

They reasonably couldn't have every character. It's a sixteen person tournament and we've already had 30 characters revealed. We have the 12 characters from last E3, the 3 other newcomers revealed so far, and 5 of the more popular characters. 3 Mario characters, 2 Pokemon, 2 Zelda, and 1 of everything else. I think that's pretty fair and balanced when it comes to character selection given that the top three are also Nintendo's biggest franchises.

Also, there's no way that there's not going to be at least one major character announcement. Both the Nintendo Direct and the Smash Tournament will easily have several hundred thousand viewers so for them to stay dead silent during events they have been hyping for a month now is out of the question.

AND WHAT WILL THE PROPER NAME BE?? i don't want it just to be Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3ds! How about a nice epic name, like brawl or melee! Something like Rumble or at least Super Smash Bros Four Wii U and 3ds, get it, huh, okay I will stop.
There'd be a lot of problems including a newly announced character in the demo.

First: The initial announcement of the tournament. Sure they could mark it as a new character and just have it be a question mark, but that does still spoil something, even if obvious.

Second: The players of the tournament have to pick their characters before it starts. Early information to anyone that isn't directly under the Nintendo banner can't ever mean anything good.

Third: It's been confirmed via the Facebook page that the Best Buy demo will be the same build as the Tournament build. Hey ho leaks away, another move that's too risky.

Fourth: They're possibly not comfortable enough with the newcomer(s) to let the public play as him/her/it yet. That's probably the reason for some of the characters not being included in the demo too.

And Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS are the official names. I'd have prefered Super Smash Bros. U and 3D for easier abbreviations, but it's no big deal.

I think we're expecting a lot because Nintendo's been pushing info about this E3 so much and even are hosting the first EVER Nintendo sponsored Smash Bros. tournament. Also it's Smash Bros.... people get excited about it.

If this is true, expect only one or two newcomers, or 2 veterans.

I'm just saying, don't get too hyped. Be realistic, and you won't get disappointed.

SSB 3DS will be releasing this summer, so E3 is the last chance for anything big. I doubt they'd do a ND right after E3. You should expect all of the characters who were yet to be confirmed or the newcomers to be announced. (which is probably around 6 or 7)

A proper name, release date, gameplay footage and a couple newcomer trailers would be enough to satisfy me, and those are all plausible things to expect at E3. Sakurai also seems to thrive off presentation, so it should be a good show.
Proper name? The games names are already final. Super Smash Brothers for Wii U and 3ds.

(The Winner of Nintendo's Smash Fest should get a copy of the Wii U game...if only we were so lucky)

Smash Bros is an entity on it's own

Okay, let's break it down. We've got:

-The Nintendo Digital Event will probably have a trailer for this game. Last time a Smash 4 trailer was shown at E3, we got 2 newcomers out of it.
-A 90-minute Q&A. Won't be streamed, but if I'm not mistaken, Wii Fit Trainer was announced under similar circumstances.
-The Invitational. It would hardly be surprising if a character was announced at some point during this, probably at the end.
-Two more days of E3 coverage from the Nintendo Treehouse. Might be a weird time for characters, but stranger things have happened.

I'm expecting 3-4 newcomers. If it turns out to be less, I might be a bit disappointed. But it'll be hard to be too upset when I'm all hyped up about actually freakin' playing the game.

P.S. Oh, and my stance on veteran reveals is that there could be anywhere from one to, like, seven or something shown in the trailer. I don't know what to expect on this end, honestly.

P.P.S. In before "setting myself up for disappointment." Just save it, okay? I'm twenty-three years old. I can take it.

I'm just saying, don't get too hyped. Be realistic, and you won't get disappointed.
Three primary reasons:

1. It's E3. Every VG media outlet and most die-hard fans will be paying attention at this particular expo more so than any others.
2. Smash 3DS releases this summer. How can you NOT spill the beans when a release is so close and a highly major expo is before it?
3. To create more hype. Wii U needs sales. Smash Bros. still needs to convince past fans and new fans it's worth buying. When is there a better opportunity? See #1.

edit: I'll add a 4th:
The E3 schedule has been revealed and Nintendo has roughly 2 hours of coverage. Guess what their most highly anticipated and blockbuster title is this Summer and Fall...?

It's a golden opportunity for sure, but Nintendo has stupidly passed up other golden opportunities before, so...

But assuming they do as you speculate, then I imagine it will go something along the lines of Sakurai coming up to congratulate the tournament winner, but then announcing that there is one more challenge left. He'll pick up a controller, and suddenly Ridley/Mewtwo/K.Rool/ect. appears on a screen and Sakurai fights the champion with *insert character here*.

But how often have they passed on E3?

Have you seen some of the past E3s? Though hopefully there will be something big after the tournament.
We've seen the schedule. We know there's an entire Super Bros. invitational. The only time Nintendo had lackluster E3 presence was when they had nothing to hype up or announce. Since we have already seen the schedule this entire thread is almost moot... we know they have plans and surely gameplay trailers for Bayonetta 2, the new Zelda, and Xenoblade X are not going to take up the entire time slots. Neither will Smash Bros., as I'm sure Nintendo has new IP's or games to announce.

Exactly. :/

I'm going to generalize here, but when X was shown during the E3 Direct, no one gave a damn. Not the fans or the media. All the people cared about was Smash, and I'm going to expect the same for this year's E3. It's this Nintendo cycle that keeps on happening, and when your usual Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, and Smash get announced, they're the only things that set Nintendo fans on fire.

I want to hope for all games getting equal representation, but if not, then oh well.
We live in an age of sequels my friend. My game design professor told us that one of our first days of class. He asked everyone in the class what the next big game they wanted to play was. After everyone gave their answers he asked "Now raise your hand if the game you said is not a sequel." and only 3 or so people raised their hands. People don't usually give a **** about new IPs and franchises they're unfamiliar with. Green lighting anew original triple A game is a huge risk since they may dump all their cash into it and no one will end up buying it since they're unfamiliar with it. Occasionally there are exceptions but they usually start off as a small free or cheap downloadable game (Minecraft for example for the former) before expanding and finally selling the full game.

Don't blame Nintendo. Blame consumers. There's not a huge market so there's even if they advertise the crap out of X it won't sell a couple million copies in the states. It happens in every company and they start to focus on their surefire money makers like Mario/Zelda/Smash. I'm sure you don't own any/many of Nintendo's newest original games/franchises anyways. Most people forget they exist. =P But being interested in X is a start.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I fully expect the same as the last huge direct. A CGI trailer, Sakurai giving us the scoop on new mechanics/stages/etc, vets and finally a newcomer or two.

e3 will have a lot of information. Not just from Sakurai but from the tournament and Smashfest. How characters feel, the actual gameplay, how the stages are. That enough more info on the game than last years E3 and the Direct combined considering that are large number of people will be playing the game at the Smashfest and watching the Invitational

As for the Digital Event, we will most likely see a trailer like last years E3 with some new stages, assist trophies, items, and characters. At least two to three veterans and one or three newcomers. Plus, as the 3DS release date is coming closer, I'm expecting to at least get the month of its release if not the day. As for the Wii U version, we may get the month.

Also, there is the Treehouse Show that will allow for playable demos. As you may recall, Ms Fit was announced then and it's entirely possible that this may happen again. Nintendo has also gone on to say that this Digital Event won't be like the others.

And then we have the Smash Roundtable Q and A

So basically:

Nintendo Digital Event Smash Trailer + the Invitational + Tree House + Smashfest + Q and A + Smashfest will probably yield the most amount if information in the history of Super Smash Bros. 4 outside of the actual releases. Information is not strictly confined to new information mind you.

Nothing is wrong about keeping expectations low but thinking that there won't be much Smash information at E3 is a huge understatement. Considering a vast majority of Nintendo's focus will be on these two titles.

But you just have to pay attention to where it can get. Let me quote my personal favourite quote from Sakurai
"Even if it's a sequel, lots of people have to give their all to make a game, but some people think the sequel process happens naturally."
I love so much this quote. I care for new IP (if they correspond to my tastes at least) but sequel can be great too. It's just the way you do sequelization that can be annoying at time.

For my expectation, I don't have solid one. The only I have and it's basically confirmed at this point, is being happy about what they announced. It actually already met my expectation when he announced smash run.

Really? Never heard that before. Wonder what will be different about it though (besides it not being called a Direct).

Downloadable demos from E3 on your home system maybe? That'd be cool.
Not sure and I don't have a source. If anyone knows more about it, please post it! I heard that Nintendo said it would be different from previous Direct-esque E3 presentations.

I understand that. I wouldn't want Nintendo to risk it and market it too aggressively, but since their E3 presentation is a pre-recorded show, wouldn't demonstrating the game properly be beneficial considering it's inexpensive? I honestly think that X has that mainstream appeal since it combines western and eastern features into one, making it look like the other AAA open world titles in the market. I'm sure there aren't a lot of games that feature mechs in an open world, so it should appeal to a lot of people as well, regardless of its genre.

I own The Wonderful 101, and it's currently Nintendo's newest IP. It was smart for them not to advertise it because its entire concept is already a niche that is really difficult to market. X, on the other hand, is surely the opposite of that.

I'm mostly hyped to see the gameplay more than anything, the invitational is more than enough for me. But I'm pretty sure they'll show a bunch of veterans in one trailer and introduce 1 or 2 newcomers.

Why do I predict a lot of info.

1. It's close to release
2. They have a bunch of stuff going on for it (A tourney even!)
3. Nintendo will be streaming their games
