I'm confused on who the WTF character was.
Was it Jigglypuff or Ness?

If you mean the biggest surprise, I think it might've been Captain Falcon. F-Zero was a cool game, but racer turned brawler was pretty funny in my opinion.

It was ness, no one in america really knew who he was, and his game was only moderately big in japan. he was the roy of melee, awsome character idea and to promote the series.

him in there added to mother 3's popularity

She was an odd pokemon who wasn't much of a fighter type.
But she sang people to sleep *thumbs up*
Besides, Jiggs is as much a fighter as Pikachu...I mean, they're both technically like, 2 feet tall.

It was definatly jiggly puff. There were many of the the og pokemone who were wuch more popular and deserving to be in smashbros. 2 reasons why i think jiggly made it. Sakurai wanted anthother pokemon. Jiggly puff was easy to animate since she basically has a kirby frame.

Who would you say was more popular than Jigglypuff?

I would say both Jiggly and Ness. Falcon was a surprise to me too.

But, in smash bros original, the assumpion was that there was only 1 hero each series involved (ignore the unlockables and see). The reason why its probably less WTF though is because he/she is unlocked so early.
However, Ness was from a game that not many people had heard of. Even though he was the hero.

I'd say WTF? characters are labels from the fans because they have no idea about the game they're from. I never thought anyone was a WTF character because I knew who all the characters were, then people I know where like "ZOMG WHOS NES!?!?". I remember one kid saying he was made for SSB64 specifically

They were going for popularity in Japan (SSB64 wasn't even going to be released outside of Japan at first), where all were well received games (Eartbound/MOTHER never really caught on over here despite the cult following). The only one I was surprised to see was Jigglypuff.

Jigglypuff is all Japan reasoning, as is Captain Falcon and Ness, whose series are highly revered in Japan at the time. The three of them are pretty WTF to anyone outside Japan. I remember being surprised about Jigglypuff, and Ness Captain Falcon who they lolz!

No real WTF character in Smash64, but Jiggs is definitely the joke character, being so light, adorable, unimpressive and weak forward throw (I bet deep inside you all also thought that the first time you saw it), having a shield-death, etc...

Ness, Falcon and Jigglypuff for me, I didn't have any idea who they where at first until I seen them in smash. I tried out new games and liked F-Zero lots, it's actually one of my favorite game series now.

To America it was a big wtf character, but Jiggs has a huge following in Japan, so it could have been forseen. Captain Falcon was my my WTF character, i had never heard of the game before.

I would actually say the WTF char was Fox. Even though he was a hero of a popular series, I would never have seen a moveset made for him. Besides him, I would say all the unlockables outside of Luigi. I had never heard of CF or Ness, and Jiggs was just a fluffball to me.

I thought Jigglypuff was put into the game instead of Pit because Nintendo feared nobody would remember him?

Ness. He was a basically a unknown newcomer turned veteran.

As of the Others, Falcon would be WTF#2 and Jiggs, well lets say she/he wasn't much of a suprise to me. Sakurai indeed wanted another pokemon and Jiggs was the orginal 'partner' of Ash Ketchum from the series, so it would only be right to put the 'Original' Face of Pokemon in the game.

Same here. I had no idea who Ness was, as I had never heard of the Earthbound series at that point.

I didn't really know who any of the characters were when I first played Smash. The only ones that were recognizable to me were the Pokemon, Fox, Mario, Luigi, and Link. I barely knew anything about Mario, Luigi, and Link though. I remember drawing a complete blank when I saw Samus and Kirby. I was pretty young then, and all I knew were Pokemon and Bomberman, along with a few racing games.
