Falcon was pretttty effing random. but AWESOME!!!

Ness for most people when this game just game out before all your new fangled z cancelling and BEEF! combos was the hardest to unlock

Sakurai indeed wanted another pokemon and Jiggs was the orginal 'partner' of Ash Ketchum from the series, so it would only be right to put the 'Original' Face of Pokemon in the game.
LOL you think sakurai made 64? Thats the funniest sh** ive read all week.

No see, smash 64, unlike brawl, doesnt suck a**. Therefore sakurai didnt touch it.

Sakurai wouldda ruined melee too if he had known what he was creating and could have seen how good it was before releasing it.

Ness. A lot of people didn't know who he was. Most everybody knew Jigglypuff.
This is true and misleading...yes people knew about Jiggly..no they did not expect to see her/him/it/they in this game, i knew about Falcon and Ness before smash but when they where in a fighting game i thought WTF (yes that was lame)

There were definitely other pokemon who were more popular than jigglypuff in the 90s. Bulbasaur, Charizard, Meowth come to mind.

But regardless, Jigglypuff was still famous, because he was a recurring character on one of the most popular shows of the day.

F-Zero was a popular franchise too but even most people who had played it didn't know who Captain Falcon was.

Luigi : Brother of Mario. Was in a lot of the Mario games. Not much of a surprise.

Captain Falcon : A racer of the F-Zero series. F-Zero X for the N64 came out 1 year before SSB64 did so I can't say he was too much of a surprise.

Ness : From the popular series Earthbound for the snes. Only released in Japan. Most Americans had no idea who he was.

Jigglypuff : Very popular in the Anime "Pokemon" based off the game from the gameboy. Jigglypuff was mostly known to be very weak and would most likely not be thought to be in a fighting game.

Just work from that.

Now that I actually DO think about, Ness was probably the WTF character.

Not many people heard of EB [I think], until Smash came out. Thats when it started getting popular.

I'd have to say C. Falcon and Fox. Both were stars in games that involved no physical fighting whatsoever.
Where did their movesets come from?
This.

Ness had ambiguity in America, but he came from an RPG. Easy translation to Smash.

I guess this makes more sence, but when it came to smash i didnt think "Chars that can fight"..mind mind just said "chars that are popular in the nintendo world" so Fox was easy to relate...where as earthbound...i didnt even know was nintendo owned xD

Read my earlier post. Captain falcon had 2 games before ssb and one of them came out only one year before ssb did.

He was heard of by plenty of people.

Hmm...i dont know about this..sure people knew about F-Zero...but even the people who did knwo abtou that/those games (the fanbase for this game was not very high at 1999) didnt really know WHO falcon was...because it was irrelivant :p

I played one F-Zero game prior to Smash64's release...and CF was still a wth to me

Ya I understand the fanbase wasn't huge and he was still odd to see in a fighting game. I was just saying that he was known of instead of being completly unknown.

He was virtually a unknown. F-Zero was an obscure series and doesn't sell very much because it is generally considered a hardcore series. How many units has F-Zero, F-Zero 2 (Japan only), and F-Zero X sold after all??? Plus in F-Zero (until G/X) the characters weren't important-their racing machines and how you used it was all that mattered.
hes nintendos main character/mascot why wouldnt he be in?

Sarcasm

Sarcasm is stating the opposite of an intended meaning especially in order to sneeringly, slyly, jest or mock a person, situation or thing. It is strongly associated with irony, with some definitions classifying it as a type of verbal irony intended to insult or wound. Sarcasm can also be used in a humorous or jesting way depending on the intent of the person speaking.
Welcome to the internetZ! :)

Sorry...I just couldn't resist!

I'd have to say the biggest wtf is the game itself. Mario vs. Donkey Kong had been dead since like 1982 or 1983, and the idea that they were going against each other in Mario Kart 64 was still new to me (in 1996). And the idea of all these "huge" characters mixing and fighting was insane. There was nothing like it before, and there still isn't anything quite like it (other then guest characters in fighting series like Smash, Soul Calibur, the whole Marvel vs. series, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, and Dead or Alive). So-the game itself was a wtf, especially since it didn't use health meters and the "standard" KO system. So obviously the "kock your foe off the stage to KO them" idea with a Super Mario Bros. (side scrolling( style is definitely a revolutionary one.

As for characters, I was suprised by Yoshi at first with no Luigi, Bowser, or Princess Peach/Toadstool. Then I saw the "How to Play" video and laughed! I wasn't too familar with Link, and he shocked me, too.

But for the real "wtf" characters, they must most definitely be Jigglypuff (you'd never see that puffball coming in a fighting game), Ness (I was confused by him), Captain Falcon (no one had really heard of him, and names weren't important with F-Zero characters until G/X), Master Hand (since he was an original character), Metal Mario (that came out randomly), and the Fighting Polygon team.

I'm still saying, he wasn't a character like Roy who didn't even have a game at the time melee came out >_>
