As far as rock music goes, my favorite movement is probably the so-called Krautrock movement in Germany in the late 60s throughout the 70s. It yielded quite a few really interesting bands, like Can, Faust, Neu!, Ash Ra Tempel, Popol Vuh, Amon Düül II, Kraftwerk, and some others. Can in particular is a strong contender for my favorite rock ensemble, with Faust not that far behind them. Some tunes:
