Assume they have never seen Smash played at a competitive level

also what information should they learn about the tournament before going

and the other stuff like what a counterpick is and why it is important

Just have fun. You probably aren't going to win if this is your first time playing competitively. Play as many friendlies as possible.

If you want to know game theory (counter picks, etc.) you can find all that out by experience or from the boards, and after a while it will become a second nature to you.

you gonna get *****.
I would say that, but i would also add in that it depends on alot of things.

Basically, you do have to just go and play, especially for your first tourney.

You cant pay attention to what anybody has to really say while you're playing, just sit down, play and learn. You'll probably fall for some "stupid ****" that nobody is supposed to fall for. That's what happens when you dont have experience; which is what you go to tournies for.

I wouldnt go as far as to flat out say "You're going to get *****". I say that because, from personal experience, i didnt get ***** at the first tourney i went to, which was MLG Orlando.

The thing is, if you dont want to get *****, you have to put in alot of work so that you can make up for your lack of knowledge with tech skill.

____

And on a side note, if you're somewhere in a big scene, such as New York or Cali; then yes, you will probably get *****. XD

This was somewhat useful. As I am going to a local tournament, and it is going to be my first one ever. Though, I have played against the people who go to the place before, and I actually think that I stand a decent chance.

dont expect to win your first tourney, but dont worry, you get more experience from tourneys.

also, dont expect the competitors to play like your friends that you play with often. they will use different techniques and strategies most of the time, so adapt to their play style rather than getting frustrated because you cant land an attack you usally land.

So I appreciate most of the comments but maybe I was mis interpreted

I was wondering more about the technical aspects like signing up, being in the right place, What A Counterpick is??

I understand that tounament players are going to be better than me and that I will learn a lot by playing etc

also what about this post makes it in the wrong spot? idk so I am asking

In most cases, the location, time, rules, etc of the tournament will be in the first post of the topic. If they aren't, just ask in that thread. Sometimes tournament hosts will forget to list things they think are obvious, so asking about things you aren't sure of is always fine.

general brawl discussion would be a better place for this thread, since the tourney board is more for discussing issues relating to tourneys, than individual aid with either playing in tourney's, match ups you'll face in tourneys, or what to expect as a first timer. other than that, again some one else has given a good answer, so thats all I have to add.

Just don't get discouraged if players seem to be leaps and bounds ahead of you. At my tournaments we always have a percentage of fresh faces to the scene, and sadly, some always get discouraged by the competitive nature of the game, but I promise you if you stick it out and play as many matches as you can and still keep a positive outlook, you will only improve as time goes on.

basically, if you do "get *****" give your opponent the proper respect, and you'll establish yourself as a good sport, and you'll be more graciously accepted into the scene as opposed to someone who overreacts and "flames" and basically displays the behavior of your stereotypical sore loser.

Good luck!

  • You have something to learn.
  • You also have something to show.
  • *scribbled in the margin* Decline money matches. ^_^

I haven't played in a smash tourney but I have gone to tourneys of other games in a competitive capacity, and those two three points sum it up.

I looked at the mainpost, and saw your sig, and you sir, are like Ghandi. Only better.

But yes, I'm hosting this big midwest brawl tournament, and I keep getting IM's/PM's about tournament etiquette from newcomers to the tournament scene, and most of all I'd say do a little research by checking out tournament threads so you at least understand the in game rules. From then on, just understand that you are not going to be as good as you probably hoped for your first outing, don't do any money matches, and most importantly, just be cool. Make a good impression on the REAL smash community.

Tournament... etiquette? It's amazing how many people lack common sense.

Don't be an ***, treat everyone nice 'til they prove they don't deserve it and don't underestimate anyone. Do everything you can to win except cheat and don't be a scrub. That's pretty much all the tournament etiquette you need.

In so few words, yes, Yuna is right.

I don't see what the issue with saying "etiquette" is, as there is more for first timers to understand than the common sense involved in not being an ***.

We're talking about people who have never been to any tournaments, and a general knowledge on the actual mechanics of the tournament are equally as useful as proper behavior.

I just meant that why would someone even needs to "learn" tournament etiquette? Most of it is common sense, anyway.

I would tell them they are going to get ***** at their first tournament, its a given. But most smashers are cool and will help you out, so be sure to ask for advice.

Ask for lots of friendlies before/after the tournament.
Also during. During is fun too.
Try and get with the most intimidatingly amazing smashers there, and let them own you and teach you the ways of smash.
Also spot dodge dsmash is delicious on most characters.
