Imagine saying anything other than Final Fantasy.

Cloud and Midgar are fantastic additions. But let's be real here.
2 Spirits (Both of which are just Cloud's artwork for Ultimate. Square couldn't even donate a PNG)
2 songs (neither are remixes)
0 assist trophies

This pays no service to either FF7 fans or Final Fantasy fans as a whole.

Of course, Final Fantasy is certainly the most underrepresented franchise with a playable character. But in comparison, Golden Sun has :

0 fighter
0 stage
8 Spirits
2 songs
1 assist trophy

I think it's even poorer.

I think most of us ignored FF because, let's be real, it's too easy a target for how bad it's representation is. Because I didn't want to go with easy targets, I posted Game & Watch and Punch-Out as my candidates for underrepped franchises.

Punch out is probably the least represented 1st party franchise.

Okay, so even thought it's been a while, I decided to come back to this thread for one reason: giving FF some base game content, featuring songs and Spirits from throughout the series.

I know Sonic has it better compared to base game FF, but people are seriously overestimating how well-represented the series is. Eggman being a DLC character can fill in some of the holes the series has in Smash:
  • Some songs and Spirits that should feel like no-brainer inclusions aren't in Ultimate
    • In the former case, Right There, Ride On was cut from Ultimate
  • The two stages we have are just two versions of Green Hill Zone
So, assuming Eggman was the last character, here's the Challenger Pack idea I had for him:

If I may point out specific installments that are lacking in content:
  • F-Zero seems to have a SNES focus for its content. I do believe Big Blue is from X and Port Town Aero Dive from GX, and all the spirits are of the characters’ GX versions. Musically though, SNES has the majority of representation. No new X or GX tracks have been added since Brawl, and representation of the GBA games (Maximum Velocity, GP Legend, Climax) is literally non existent. I just want the GX pilot themes especially CF’s and Black Shadow’s 🥺
  • Xenoblade Chronicles X has only five Spirits: Elma, Lin, Lao, Tatsu and the Formula Skell. Pyra/Mythra could have come with X music as it is another game in the Xenoblade series but they didn’t. Whether this is due to licensing issues with Hiroyuki Sawano or not is unknown. I just want Uncontrollable in smash idec about a playable Elma at this point JUST GIVE ME UNCONTROLLABLE 😭
  • Tokyo Mirage Sessions has only 1.5 Spirits (due to it evolving): Tsubasa Oribe and her Carnage Form. That’s it. No spirits of Itsuki Aoi (the literal PROTAGONIST), Kiria Kurono, Toma Akagi, Eleonora Yumizuru or the other playable characters who I can’t be arsed to recall their names right now. No music either, though AVEX owns the vocal tracks and I think that’d be a pain to license.
  • Splatoon’s content is mostly focused on the first game (Squid Sisters AT and Miis, majority of music from first game, Inkling’s moveset is more reminiscent of 1 than 2 weapons wise). The only 2 content is the Off the Hook Spirit and a few Off the Hook songs (and I think Salmon Run songs?), and the only Octo Expansion content are the Spirits of the Octoling Girl & Octoling Boy, and Octoling Octopus. No Octo Canyon (2’s Hero Mode) music or Spirits, no Octo Expansion music or spirits of the other OE characters (including OtH and Cap’n Cuttlefish’s OE designs)
  • While a bit of an outlier, it is weird that both Cuphead and Travis’s Miis have Spirit Events that replace the fighters with the respective Miis if you own them, but Sans of Undertale doesn’t have a corresponding Spirit Event. Maybe this is due to Toby Fox’s lore stipulating that monsters in Undertale don’t have souls so they can’t be Spirits, it’s currently unknown.
  • Speaking of the above point, I wonder: since the Shantae Mii with her included song was added, does that replace the fighter with her Mii and song if you own it as well? Since Shantae is a base game Spirit

the under appreciation i am thinking of is by the devs

the franchises i think missed some really great opportunities.

1 Legend of Zelda
1.1 Zelda should have been buffed to be high tier
1.2 __AOC Impa __ should have been CP8

2 Metroid
2.1 Samus should have gotten a reworked move-set

To be fair i guess that not that important but its weird how Genocide sans is the only Undertale representation atleast a non gaster blaster costume wouldve been nice!

Kirby to be more specific NON sakurai Kirby! Even the Kirby never tries anything argument should be super dead by now (eventho star allies already made it clear that it is a celebration of 2d kirby) although considering its a new era im not sure how many members of kirbys supported cast will reapear but considering theres waddle dees in the trailer that seems to mean that atleast the DDD, Meta and bwd will stay in it! (because why would kirby save EVIL waddle dees?) and if you think im overthinking this look at this picture in Star allies:
Anyways got off topic didnt i?
So yeah basically add:
Bandana dee
Dark matter
magolor
NOT MARX
A Dedede based stage (thats the only time ill accept a super star ultra based stage)
maybe halcandra
or the new city (which is a good raeson to never get an airide 1 stage)
and how about sakurai stops avoiding that meta knight has a canon Final smash i mean Shinya added the cape in robobot and now meta knight gets 4 wings?

We got a Mii hat of Octoling!…

…but it’s the enemy Octoling from the first game. Once again, Splatoon 2 got the short end of the stick. Maybe next game, we’ll have playable Octolings (the Octo Expansion version) and more love for Pearl & Marina aka Off the Hook

but then Splatoon 3 would likely be screwed. Oh well

The fact that we have 3 identical Links, and only like 6-7 tools among them, when the whole thing about Link is his versatility with gear. Like what?

I can understand keeping them that way now that they have already been implemented, but why on Earth is Young Link’s Final Smash not Fierce Deity Link? That’s literally the whole reason people wanted him back, that being the transformation masks.

Generally, I find some series to be misrepresented, rather than underrepresented. Donkey Kong, Kirby, and Metroid (other than Frigate Orpheon) have pretty much nothing for their most recent entries. I think nearly every Zelda character in the game could be totally rehauled. They went for the most generic possible choices for Mario Kart and Fire Emblem stages.

There are a few third-parties I'd consider poorly represented, but I'm not sure how much of that is really in Nintendo's power to address.
