VGXPO 2009 - Potential National Tourney: Who's Interested?

I'm sure most of you have heard of the Smash tourneys I've held at VGXPO each year, and plans for this year are starting to be made. Case in short, I want to make it BIG.

I'm already on board as the leader of the game tournaments and I will be talking to the owners of the show very soon about making Smash a huge thing. So I could potentially be getting a ton of floor space, TVs and some systems provided, and staff members to use at my disposal (last year as a leader I was able to pretty much tell any volunteer not doing anything to work for me and do whatever I want lol, so I can have a team full of pool leaders, organizers, etc).

Before I start talking to them, I figure it would be good to sort of prove to them that there would be interest in this. The whole thing would work really similar to how SNES is going to be, with the tournament being three days all in a giant game convention.

Also, feel free to ask any questions.

Edit: oh yea, it would be in october, in center city philly (about 2 miles from the cot4 venue)

If you plan on making this happen in October, gotta make this official ASAP so hype can build.

And when you say "Smash", exactly what games do you plan for this? Is it just gonna be Brawl...?

If Brawl is the MAIN event, I'm in. Melee/B+ have to be side tournies, or I don't care.

>_> Melee as a side event......wtf. Wasn't genesis ran by melee players? We didn't say "brawl as a side event". Whatever...

Haha i work for VGXpo, and the past few tourneys there have been very poor from what i have seen. No real organization.

Barely any room, like 6 tvs. Other games taking over Smash. Tournaments not ending. People generally confused. No one being there when their turn is up.

Unless you can actually get a dedicated tournament room and more people working on the organization, it seems like it would be a waste of entry fees again. (BTW, i haven't played the last 2 years, only watched, so maybe it would be different from the gamers' perspectives.)

What will happen if there are just as many melee players? Wil it still be a side event?
As far as i know from reading this thread it doesn't look like melee will be there at all but idk... dont ask me... I was just explaining something that seemed logical to me.

Please don't give false info here...

Yes it's true that the past two years there haven't been too much room and they've only provided about 6 or so TVs, which is why I want to see who is interested so I can give the heads of the VGXPO a reason to give us more room and TVs.

Every tournament finished, I have no idea what you mean. Every single one of them ended fine, and some of them early. Saturday and Sunday 2 years ago was flawless because I was completely 100% in charge. Last year on Friday they forced me to do single elimination and I believe there was no entrant cap, and I got fed up with people trying to tell me how to run it, so I said w/e and just played in it, and won $ lol. Saturday and Sunday though I took full charge, and ran regular double elimination tournaments that ran even faster than it did on Friday (I also had some more intelligent volunteers with me as well).

As for no one being there, that's not the TO's fault if people don't stick around to listen for their match to be called. And when I ran it full force on Sat/Sun I DQ'ed people left and right as they should have been. Smash has also had some of the best turnout numbers wise of any tournament the past two years, with just about everyone leaving with positive impressions (except for the few rare cases of a DQ or some scrub who thought they were amazing only to get 3 stocked by myself, AndyG, TUSM, Rush, Coldkillr, Steel, or Velocity lol. (or dare I say... Cody McBadMetaKnight)

I understand that what has happened the last few years is not the TO's fault, but from what I have seen VGXpo is making it very hard for a well organized and well received tournament to take place. Too many games in one place, no real planning on when and where tournaments would take place. If you looked at the site last november, every tournament was listed as TBA as for when it would taking place even up to the day of the events. If you can convince them to give you a room and can get better setups then that would be great. I know Ed can be really dodgy / distracted on what he wants the expo to be though.

My friends payed to get in on saturday around 1 PM only to be told that Smash Bros sign ups were over and they were finishing up for the day but they could come back on sunday being told "We're not really sure when we would be starting though so get here early." Of course they didn't come back for that...

Yea there was a lot of confusion problems last year, since they forced everyone to sign up through the ticket agency they hired. I already said in the email to them as a requirement for this to get big, we need to 100% drop the ticket agency for Smash and do it a different way.

Ahh yea. Well I can talk to Dave about it soon and try to help you organize it this year =). I was thinking of going anyway. I know that you will atleast need your own room just for Smash for this to run smoothly.

I'm not sure if they would be cool with a completely different way of doing ticketting for smash since tournaments is not their main concern right now, but 28 dollars for the whole weekend is not too bad of a venue fee.

Or were you thinking of doing the tournament completely seperate from the Xpo just at the convention center?

na im sure it would still be part of the convention. im just not sure if it would have a separate room like the retrocon last year of if it would just have A LOT more floorspace. either one really works.

Cool, I guess the big thing now would be getting enough people on board early to show them that Smash would have alot of people and require the space.

To be honest, I've been to VGXPO the past two years, and VGXPO always seemed to be a bit disappointing... The tournaments did seem pretty disorganized, but I suppose I can't really judge because I didn't really stay for the whole thing (it was too crowded to even watch and I'm short as it is, lol, let alone not getting to participate) =P Despite past instances, I know you have TO ability and can see a bigger better tourney happening. I'm up for the idea of entering/checking it out. I'd feel more compelled to go again with a major tourney going on.

My only inquiry for now is... How would payment/entry fees for this go? I mean, if you're making this a part of the convention itself, does that mean people have to buy a badge for VGXPO (weekend most likely if you plan a full weekend tourney) along with paying a separate tourney fee that will go to the pot?
