A.K.A. VA's SSITWNWH

In laymans terms: VA's Stupid Shit Idea That Will Never Work/Happen

Big Edit: Having spoken to a few of the community it seems as if there is some sort of interest for this kind of event. I've also thought of a few ways to do it best.

Location

I believe that London would be the best place to hold a tournament of this size. A lot of smashers new and established are based in London, it's also local(ish) to me so would be ideal to host it here. Open to suggestions as always.

Housing

At first glance this seems impossible as the London housing is so spread out, however there is a solution. The idea of renting out a hostel for everyone to stay seems to solve any housing issues besides that of price. It does add onto to the total cost but it's worth it for this event.

Tournament Format

To avoid inviting people and having only a small event, this event would be open to everyone and run over two days instead. The Saturday being the qualifying day which eventually produces a top 8 or 16 that play off in one or two round robin pools the next day.
Again everything is open to discussion.

Dates

This is a serious issue as I won't be here after may until september, so to avoid conflict with TKI it would need to be early may or mid september for me to organise this. If anyone else would like to organise it I could hand over the idea to someone else happily and it could happen anytime in between.

Cost

This would likely cost a lot more than your average tournament with high entry/venue/housing/travel prices so consider all of these factors when discussing Sit & Win.

I will be researching all of those headings over this week, as always, feel free to post up any suggestions.

EDIT: I'm leaving the country at the end of May to return again at the beginning of September, this will NOT be happening in September. For now I will leave this idea. I will re-assess my interest in smash when I get back, if people are still up for it, I will look at taking steps towards running this. thanks.

well..... i like the idea that it's going be to melee lol Not sure about the whole "top players in the UK" thing, thats just gonna cause a lot of arguments. What would be the reason for limiting anyway ? But if you can make an event where there is big cash prizes and can get good projectors etc then that sounds like a good idea to me.

The only reason I say that is because it'd be the only way we could have everyone good playing each other in a huge round robin event. Which is the whole point of the idea tbh. I need help with the idea so am open to suggestions...but I kind of want to turn it into the final melee event. Where like everyone who is good turns up and we play 1 or 2 big pools of all the best people and everyone plays off at the end. I don't know if I can organise it before I leave anyway....

you'll find it difficult getting yourself sorted for early may, would seriously have to get your skates on to have a chance. Esp to get enuff people there.

Past that just run swiss format. Esp if you want people playing each other more and not opt for a round robin process (which with too many people would take far to long !)

The principle of a Swiss tournament is that each player will be pitted against another player who has done as well (or as poorly) as him or herself.

The number of rounds is determined before the tournament. You basically play till this said number of rounds playing opponents with similar win/loss records of yourself. You could theoretically not determine the number of rounds and play until you have an ultimate winner, but this would take to long.

Normally what you would happen is after a certain number of rounds you'd take the top 8/16 w/e and place them into a DE bracket and seed based on their records.

As your always playing opponenets with similar records (except for the initial match but this can be slightly avoided by seeding from the start) then imo it is more accurate placings wise.

However, it does take longer.

It's definately in september, we are looking at 19th of september tenatively.

Also, please tell me how much you'd be willing to pay for housing a night so I can look into booking hostels etc.

i tried this already VA, its a hassle to host an european tourney in london - Fuzzyness at Nhat's
It's not european, I'm looking around in lot's of other forums and trying to drum up as much support as I can for a tournament, it seems that holding a brawl side event would draw in a big audience for the second day which of course would be finals for melee aswell.

Are you looking at hiring out a hostel for the weekend or just us staying there or what? Aka will the prices be split or will we be putting ourselves up?

Well both are an option, I was thinking about renting and splitting the cost amongst the amount that actually turn up. But it's like £12 per night at the very cheapest. It's all about what people are prepared to pay really.

the way I see it the three options are: me saying, sort it out yourselves and give a big range of hostel options.

Or I can rent one out but I'd need guarenteed turn out to do this imo.

Just house as many as we can at charles/spkz's which won't work lol.

If you rented a hostel out itself you will also have to put a deposit down. I also dont think you will get enough people to cover all beds in a hostel.

As such is makes more sense to find a venue and then post details of local hostels. Players then book themselves or in groups.

Alot of hostels have 10-12 people rooms. So if you get a venue early then people could book out these large rooms in bulk. Obv. renting the large rooms are cheaper than 2-4 person rooms.

I did a quick look on hostelworld. Its going to cost people £10/12 per night. Basically an additional £20 to what you would normally expect to pay at a tourney.

However as this is in london pretty much everyone can get the coach to london using funfares for relatively cheap ie £10/£20 quid return.

The cheapness of travel means that the cost of accomodation shouldn't feel to bad!! if we have all managed to get to yeovil then this is easy money =)

Hostels are £8-10 per night all over the UK. They could definetly become a major form of housing in the future esp. in regards to brawl where tourney turnouts may be double of what they are now and thus housing people in one place isnt going to happen =)

Tis the future!
