Using Melee to train for Brawl

Now that we know about the physics of this game and a little bit about how this game works, do you guys think there is any way that we can practice for it via Melee?

I was thinking:

1) Use Samus (because her falling speed is slow like that in Brawl)

2) Don't wavedash (obviously b/c there's no wavedashing in Brawl)

3) Don't use missles to turn yourself around (b/c B moves cannot do this in Brawl)

Now obviously this won't be very much like Brawl, but for those of us who are desperate and want to get some kind of practice, Melee is the only thing we've got.

Does anyone else have any ideas of how we could use Melee to 'Train for Brawl'?

Yes, it is true that trying to simulate Brawl with melee is impossible. But as i said before, for those of us who just want something that is kind of like Brawl in some way, then there are probably a couple of different ways to try and make Melee like Brawl.

You could try to familiarize yourself with every character in Melee. There won't be that much changes in their movesets. Playing as them helps to fight against them.

Edit: When it comes to using characters like Samus, I'm not the right person to tell if it works. I haven't played the game. I'd like to hear an answer to that question from somebody who was at the E for All.

You could wait for the game to come out yeah
Lol, yeah i know, but that seems so far away. It would be awesome if Sakurai put the E for Brawl demo out on retail. Then we would have something to hold us over until Feb. 10th

At least we got Halo 3 (for those of us who like Halo). I am already a 50 in Team Slayer in it though so it seems kind of pointless to play anymore.

Nope I don't play Halo at all.

Anyway I do believe SSB64 will help soon. Since you can play people online it helps some. Also the fact that there is no wavedashing, so you can practice timing and spiking, even though brawl will be completely different in the fighting engine.

how about you go play super mario galaxy. comes out soon.

I just play Melee with my friend. He's always been better than me, but Im starting to beat him. I play as Mario and he plays as Fox (won't it be a nasty surprise when he sees how much weaker Fox is :grrr:) anyways. We actually use tournament rules (though i hate them) just because were evenly matched enough

I think merely playing SSB64 would fare much better than playing SSBM with Samus and refraining from using missiles or wavedashing. According to many players, SSBB plays closer to it's 64 counterpart than SSBM. (Plus, Gimpyfish states that many character's attacks are similar to the first version.)

No not yet, but dec. 3 is a monday (when vcs are relesed) so I am guessing it will come out then.

You can use GC, but the listed controls in game will be different the the controls on the controler.

I train by playing Melee and (trying to) mastering playing with any character.

That way, I get controller practice to keep myself warmed up, and if you're able to play well with any character, you'll be able to adapt to changes better than if you only main one character every match you play.

Even with some slightly different physics, training with every character will prepare you to relate and adapt to Brawl faster.

I'll probably put in a ton of time on Smash 64 if/when it hits the Virtual Console, too, for even more adaptability.

Training with ssbm or ssb wont do much good, you would probably have better luck watching any ssbb vids memorizing all the character moves, and if you have the time, start making new techniques up before the game even comes out.

It is a fine idea to look what effects each move has on the opponent.

Example:
How much it flinch's the enemy
How much damage is done
How quick or slow it is
How open you are after the attack and how long
How hard is it to avoid
How long it takes for the opponent to recover

With so many characters and moves, tons of combos are possible.

Im on it!!!

But seriouslly, whoever figures out the most advance techniques first, and perfects them will be the best...atleast temporarlly. Imagine if when melee 1st came out someone could run a falco like Dashiz... insane.

Melee's good to train reaction time and reflexes, I suppose.

And many characters are similar to their Melee counterparts, so I don't think it'll hurt.

Dude, the games are so different that you wouldn't be able to use Melee to train for Brawl. I played it at E-4-All, and the games are so different that you wouldn't believe it. The game is floaty, which makes it really more difficult. I mained MK and Peach at E-4-All, and Peach is kinda similar to Melee. However, MK was just about the floatiest thing I've ever played. He was floatier than Jiggz. I liked the game though, however, here's the point.

THE GAMES ARE TOO DIFFERENT, U CAN'T USE MELEE TO TRAIN 4 BRAWL!!
Thank you

Using the past game to train for the new one doesn't help at all. I remember training up for Melee on the N64, which didn't do much at all do to the vast differences.

TBH I don't think it's gonna help at all, from what i've heard Brawl is going to be a TOTALLY different game, so training on melee for brawl would be kind of pointless :p

I have a question: Should i stop wavedashing against friends and other stuff that's not going to be in brawl? Or should I just keep playing the same way i usually do? I've been meaning to post a topic like this but some1 thought of it b4 me already :p Also is dash dancing in brawl? or was that just a stupid question to ask? lol. Plz respond, i'd like to hear your opinions.....

3 Months guys... three months...

I remember when it was three months until Dec 3... good times.
I'm actually glad it's not December 3rd. I wouldn't be able to play my wii till Christmas anyway..so that leaves a good 30 days for everyone to have played brawl before me.:p

Now I can play it at the same time as everyone else...except Japan. Gonna be hard to resist the urges to check GameFaq's for cheat codes and spoilers...because the JNP version will already have it done within those 2 weeks.

I agree, glad they pushed it back; there goes more features and addons in the final version.

Hopefully a couple new characters I want to be in :D

I'm pretty sure, playing melee will help with your brawl reaction time and overall comfortability with the game. It's better then not trying to train at all... it's more like training your mind.

**** I sounded like a nerd right there, time to do something cool.

...I'll think of something later -.-;

no your right. you'll have better reaction time. I highly suggest playing SSB64 online since 64 has no no wavedashing and etc. Just pure spiking and timing right.

I've been playing melee to get my reaction timing right too, it's really a good idea.

When I started to get into following brawl's release, I picked up a gamecube controller and was pure trash my first couple matches.

When playing Melee, you have to willfully restrain yourself. When Brawl comes out, you can run free within the confines of the physics engine. I doubt any amount of Melee training will make a huge difference in Brawl performance.

Play Melee for Link. I hear he plays basically the same execpt with more speed power.

However, lay off the projectiles. They've changed. /boohoo.

(I liked the old boomerang! So sue me.)
