I'm from Australia and these statistics really suprise me... I just don't understand how 1 in 4 people in our country are considered obese. I look around my home room at school and there are probably 1 or 2 guys I would consider obese from a class of 30. I guess you see alot of 'over 60s' who are obese but still, 26% is MASSIVE.

Maybe you're so used to the overweight and obese, that you've come to think your classmates are all normal when in fact, they're all overweight! You've been desensitized to fat!

Hey Vander, I know what you mean. Just keep in mind people tend to grow into their bodies around high school an put on weight after that, being surrounded by school kids all day kind of skews your views a bit. I'm at uni in Melbourne and going into the city every day I see quite few fatties.

Ironically enough, they just announced today that after Japan, australia's the country with the longest life expectancy.

This is obviously stupid, papers in the UK have been saying exactly the same thing about our country for about a year now. I haven't read the article yet but i bet most of the studies done on this kind of thing are crap.

*reads article*

"But some weight specialists have questioned the tool used to measure obesity, saying "entire rugby teams" would be classified as obese if their body mass index (BMI) was calculated.

BMI is measured by dividing weight in kilograms by height in metres squared. A BMI of over 25 is considered overweight while more than 30 is obese.

But the tool does not distinguish between muscle and fat, prompting calls for the BMI overweight limit to be raised to 28."

BINGO, found a flaw already.

This is just a typical case of the media frying up a **** storm out of nothing.

Then tell me how they come up with these very precise figures of 25 or 26%. If they are using the figures of the BMI of people who are rugby players or very fit athletes then obviously the results are very scewed. Then there are also factors to consider like how many people are they basing those figures on, calculating the average of a nation like australia using only say even 40'000 people leaves a lot of room for error, espescially when the population is about 25 million. The margin of error leaves enough room for more than 1% change in the results and therefore there's a good chance, with more advanced research australia might just come out slimmer than the states. The article is misleading based on the research there is no epidemic on it's way, it's just another case of media hysteria, anyone remember Bird flu ?

I've read plenty of articles along the same lines in the UK saying such such and giving percentages of how fat our country is based mostly on very poor research or dare i say it.... no research at all. Even using your own eyes i think it's pretty obvious that there's no chance that 1 in 4 people in your country are obese. I have family in Australia and compared to most of the rest of the world the ethic towards sports and physical activity is very VERY good, the quality of life generally in australia is very good and i'm not surprised the life expectancy is so high, something else which contradicts largely with what is said in that article.

Yeah, except that you've heard both from me and Mic both agree on us being obese. After spending a weekend around much of the city, I have to say it's pretty confirmed that 1/4 are obese. Yes, Australia in general has a very fit culture, but that's definetly changing. When I work with kids, both in schools and out of school hours care, the crap they eat is staggering, and the kids certainly are becoming bigger. You can't help but think 'my god, why are they giving their kid a packet of crisps, a chocolate bar and a canof lemonade for Lunch!?' until you see the kids parents and you can see where they get it from.:urg:

My mum has a running joke when she went shopping on wednesdays and always saw lots of obese people. Since then usually when we see a large number of obese people, she jokes that 'It must be Wednesday'

It's been Wednesday too often.

I honestly think it`s because America isn`t getting its tomato fix.

I used to suffer from a severe case of fat but they have a cream for that now...

I, man, am regal; a German am I.
i'm surprised that the figure you provided for the population of the U.S. has nine significant figures. promptly cite this research and tell me how it can estimate to the exact digit. i'll need to know the exact minute and second that this data was taken. if you cannot do so, then your entire argument is baseless and shall be ignored.
The figure now is 304,593,898.

That's really surprising, I never pictured Australia as having a high fat population, but I guess I was wrong.

Eh, 1% less isn't that much. But this comes as a surprise to me.
you make it sound like it's a good thing, well i tell you it's not

obesity is a serious problem and shouldn't be laughed at

We dont have the highest percent of fat people anymore? I got an idea. Maybe people figure if they lose weight, they will get better gas mileage in their cars
lol.. maybe this is true since fat people ted to like.... slow the care down thier by moving slower and consuming more gas

I'm not fat I'm just overly sexy.
Is the same thing as saying "I ain't fat, just bigboned"

Anyway you know you have a problem at hand when you can actually eat Madonnah's (McDonald's) and enjoy it, knowing that they sugarcoat everything on their menu except their chicken nuggets, diet sodas, and coffee (or so I have heard at least) or maybe when you go swimming in the ocean and a whale comes to you, mistakening you for family...even though you're bigger than it XD.

McDonalds is a horrible horrible place, but do you you know what's even worse? Checkers/Rally's! They refuse to give anyone any nutrition information. You can't find it, they'll play mind games with you if you ask for it. That just reeks of conspiracy and foul play.

Those fries are great, but you're proably paying a price in the long run.
