Guest characters can be cool, but MK is MK. It's its own independent series with it's own characters and it's own fanbase. People are gonna get a bit upset if you cut those fan-favourite characters for complete outsiders, especially since chances are you aren't going to be seeing that cut character for something new in a while.

Imagine the fanbase. :mad088:
I mean, people make theories all the time about "The only way they can make the next Smash is if they port Ultimate! There's no other way!!!". I mean, that's dumb, but I guess people are that desperate to keep characters they want and make and excuse to nuke 90% of the Fire Emblem roster.

Makes me wonder who started that trend? I know Tekken had Gon in Tekken 3, and Soul Caliber just loves having guest fighters, but they truly didn't become 100% mainstream until Brawl, and yet, Brawl wasn't the first to do it.
I feel like Snake and Sonic in Brawl really opened up the floodgates when it came to guest characters in fighting games, due to the fact that they were announced during the rise of the internet and social media.

I'd assume other developers looked at the attention the addition of those two were receiving on media sites and forums, and decided to follow suit, by adding guest characters in their games, so they could generate the same type of buzz.

But imagine if Smash 6 didn't cut anyone and just gave us 1 new character.
I don't know if that's entirely fair of a comparison because Smash reused assets and I believe every Netherrealm game is made from the ground up. Though that would mean they can reuse assets to make porting the characters over significantly easier. Because you used Smash as a comparison, let's talk about 4. People were devastated about Ice Climbers and Snake even if we got Mega Man, Ryu and Cloud.

That being said nobody's saying you're wrong for liking guest characters nor are they saying guest characters are inherently bad or anything

love em or hate em, random-*** guest characters that make no sense are the norm for fighting games these days

joker in smash, geralt in SC7, TMNT in injustice, ****ing negan in tekken - the bigger the stir it creates the better
Objection. Joker in smash makes sense

Negan and Noctis in Tekken on the other hand

Mileena and Ermac have skipped a fair amount of MK titles already so I don't really care that they're gone from 11.
Would replace Joker with literally anyone else though, even Hsu Hao.

I mean, honestly, considering the nature of some people in the Smash community, I think if they had to cut character people would be pretty upset.

Yeah that argument gets under my skin.
"Smash Ultimate is perfect, I don't want another Smash game!"

Well I do, *****. You can keep playing Ultimate as long as you want even if the new one exists.
Looks at Melee.

I don't think Street Fighter had any guest characters in its home game. I know the crossovers, but just in vanilla SF. kinda quirky doe.

It's just frustrating to hear people say they'd rather not have a cool unique guest character and just have Mileena for the 8th time in a row.

TMNT are comic heroes like DC ones that actually had crossovers with Batman in the past Smash doesn't have any particular rule about third parties get in (only one so far is only videogame characters), I wouldn't put them as random. Valid in regards of Negan and while Geralt is a literary character, I would think Darth Vader/Yoda/Starkiller and 2B would be more weird given the discrepancy in technology with the rest of the cast.

I guess you consider all the Final Fight characters to be a bit of the origin for fighting game crossovers with completely separate things. Nowadays we just accept that SF and Final Fight are in the same universe, but it was sort of out there years ago.

Anyway this is rather funny as the most controversial DLC character is a character in Injustice where the most controversial DLC characters are the MK characters because goddammit why did we get Raiden instead of the highly requested Static Shock who even had goddamn CONCEPT ART

People care more about Haggar than Cody and Guy, since a solid 2/3 of their lore is now in SF.

I think there's a huge difference in guest characters in what is essentially a video game crossover...

And guest characters in a franchise with a massive cast of original characters that is known for said original characters.

But go off I guess?
I’m not going off, just noting a lot of the similarities in arguments.

You’re right of course that a crossover is a different ballgame. It’s still the same reactions though. Some people are pumped by the “how outside the box and cool!” aspect of guests/third parties. Others are annoyed or upset that classic characters from the more “standard” pool for each respective franchise get less of a role.

Smash is a hard comparison to make to any other fighting game. It's made even funnier when you realize Smash is technically the highest selling fighting game franchise.

Smash uses well known characters from over 30 different series. People grow up with the characters, make memories with the characters, etc. They have personal attachments, so to see them in this huge crossover is really something else. In addition, it's picks like Ryu, Sonic, Snake, Cloud, etc. These are characters that are stellar and can actually fit into Smash.

With a game like Mortal Kombat, it has a cast of characters specific to itself, just like Street Fighter or Tekken. You don't have the same crossover element that Smash does, and the guest characters (imho) don't get the same response simply because it's a different kind of game, frankly. The last time I played Mortal Kombat was 9. It was fun. But X did nothing for me, and this game isn't really doing it for me either. It just seems kinda...odd to leave out characters that have a history with the series or are cool/unique in favor of the guest characters. It's not that surprising, but still disappointing. Rain was cool, I thought at least.

Still find it sorta weird that no MvC game has had Haggar v Zangief yet. I get they'd be sorta similar move wise, but it's a big rivalry all the same.

Guest characters are interesting in my opinion as long as those guest characters fit within the setting/tone of the game they appear in, like Richter Belmont in Samurai Shodown, or Negan in Tekken (In my opinion). That’s why the Star Wars characters are soo divisive/base breaking in Soul calibur because stars wars simply doesn’t fit in a medieval fantasy like Soul Calibur.

Sorry, couldn’t tell without your gratuitous use of /s
/s

Hahaha
The only reason I use /s is because if I don't someone is gonna take me seriously when I make a sarcastic remark then they'll just get upset at me and my anxiety can't take that.

tbf Tekken's the same franchise where one of Heihachi's kill moves involves him strapping his opponent to a rocket

it kinda thrives on absurdity

The thing is, Smash already added every single classic character with bringing back all the veterans. There is room for left field picks.

MvC is weird because there's always so many obvious choices that don't get made. Well, unless you're a Marvel character in Infinite I suppose
I do sorta like all the weird choices though. No say, Daredevil or Punisher is sorta lame, but having really weird/obscure characters like Shuma or MODOK in there really helps make the roster feel interesting and unique imo.

tbf there's more than Mileena mains being unhappy with their mains being cut
Sektor and Cyrax are in the story but not playable like Rain was in MKX
My main concern is my main, yeah, but overall it feels like there's a significant chunk of missing characters.

And getting the Terminator, the Joker, Ash Williams and Spawn over Kenshi, Rain, Smoke, Reptile, Ermac, Tanya, etc. isn't something that excites me in the least. They even left out the interesting new character concepts from the last game like Ferra/Torr and Takeda.

But they brought back the ****ing Orge from Tekken 3. So.

Also **** Skarlet.

Yeah, no Punisher felt weird, especially as most of Winter Soldier's **** was 'weapons'. I love seeing Bucky in the MCU and I don't like Punisher but it just feels like Punisher should have been there instead

Shuma's amazing because back then, Capcom literally just looked at characters Marvel had and went "I want that one" like a kid with a toy catalogue lmao. 3 had Marvel give a list and Infinite had Marvel just outright choose for them which just isn't fun

My problem with guest characters in everything but Smash is that unlike Smash?

Most crossovers in fighting games are less about celebrating that character or two franchises joining and more about trying to draw an outside audience to a genre that struggles in this day and age.

And I feel there's better ways to get people into fighting games than just throwing two franchises together and hoping it works.
