There are more than 11 stages that don't rely on gimmicks.

Because having more than that is excessive. We don't really have many options besides 4 battlefield clones and warioware. Every other stage gives an unfair advantage or is just bad for spectators

There’s this theory about the Metroid stages saying that they are made innappropiate for competitive players on purpose. This being the case because the Smash team may have wanted to show in the form of gameplay how dangerous and desolate the world of Metroid is in-universe.

Needless to say, I like it a lot since it makes sense.
