I’m also going to briefly comment on some of the ideas that Dragon Quest “wasn’t widely considered likely for Smash” before Verg leaked Erdrick.
Well, spoiler alert, but the Smash character speculation community is actually not all that good at character predictions. Not that that is our purpose or job, but the reason I suspect Dragon Quest wasn’t previously considered is because Smash speculation fans start with their own wants, and then bandwagon other characters that show up here with lots of support.
From what i’ve noticed, most fans here seem to mainly be Nintendo fans with some 3rd party experience. The 3rd party or non-Nintendo series experience is usually pretty typical, so for example Minecraft. Because people have played Minecraft, they like Steve. Enough people like Steve that he becomes a hot topic and suddenly a “likely pick”.
Series that are just as large, if not larger, than 3rd party series already in Smash for whatever reason are left alone. Dragon Quest wasn’t, but it should have been. Similarly, believe it or not, Ryu was never considered likely for DLC last game. As soon as I saw him, I realized what they were going for. The same conversations happened, that Ryu was “unexpected”, despite being the flagship character of the top legacy fighting game.
Cloud is in a tier of his own, but that was because nobody actually thought FFVII would ever be on a Nintendo console, let alone freaking Cloud in Smash. It’s also Final Fantasy, which is a series that, in a celebration of gaming, you can’t leave out.
This is why I and other users have tried to drum up conversation about series like Resident Evil, because the same thing could very well happen with them. Genre defining, multi-media franchises other than Minecraft absolutely have a chance, and they should actually be discussed rather than like 5 minutes and then back to the same 3 characters that ironically come from leaks, those being Steve, Doomguy and Ryu Hayabusa.

Lol “briefly”
