If the ps3 reads cd/ps1 games then the red laser is working, this issue may be that the red laser lens is dirty. Consoles are fairly easy to disassemble if you are confident enough to dig down to the laser assembly. If not, a lens cleaner disc at Walmart may do the trick.

...That or the disc is dirty. Just use some dish soap and water. Waft disc to dry. (Don't use any of the moisturizing hand soaps or anything like that)

Thanks Zu1 i went through several ps2 games(even ones that have no scrathes/smudges). I'll look into that disc cleaner thing though. Thanks.

Could also just tweak the dvd pot. Just be sure to measure starting resistance with a multimeter and to decrease by 100ohm at a time, haha, or else you'll burn out the laser.

Oh no, didn't mean to confuse! The lens cleaner is pretty safe. I meant the laser potentiometer. It's an adjustable resistor on the side of the laser assembly that let's you control how much voltage goes to the laser. You will need a multimeter to know how much you have tweaked it though.
