Ev I feel like your missing a lot of the details
Also the new controller isn't required, but after seeing some of the applications and thoughts from 3rd parties, it will be good. But here's the thing, it's compatible with all Wii accessories. Something like Zelda plays more than fine on the Remote + Nunchuk, and it can be used on the new system. However free-ing up screen real estate and prevention from constantly switching screens (which really slows down gameplay) is a great advancement. It's a reason why so many people are welcoming OoT on the 3DS over the N64.
It's still a standard system when all is said and done. Nintendo also isn't going to be playing catch-up as much as you think. We're at a point where graphics are almost reaching their limitations so increases in graphics aren't all that important. The Wii lagged however is because it lacked the now standard technology of HD. Now that Wii U has that, with additional graphic power, it's fine. Notice how neither company mentioned their next system, Nintendo's going to be out before their successors for a long time. If anything, it's the other companies now playing catch-up with their innovative controls to match Nintendo. Sony still can't get the damn move right, and I'm sure we're all IN LOVE with the Kinect after 360's presser <_<
It's funny actually how this can really help hard core games compared to the other companies. They have been touting their graphical prowess, but Nintendo is there now. On the other hand, their plans for controls are well... Well, they slow the games down. 80% of the games we saw using Kinect and Move were designed to be on rails because of how they use their controls. Kinent controls actually look slower with latency and potential problems of recognition while the new screen on the Wii U actually speeds up game play by removing weapon change screens, removing HUD elements, etc. What's faster - swinging your arm to the side to switch to the next weapon in line in your arsenal, or tapping on any weapon in your arsenal (no line required)... The Wii U's technology is what enhances gameplay.
This isn't to say the Kinect is bad, it certainly has its perks. But the Wii U Tab actually enhances hardcore gameplay while the Kinect hampers it.
