Tournament Rules are Great for *Tournaments*

I've always had this knocking at the back of my head. Why do people always have to play 1 vs. 1/2 vs. 2, 4-stock, no-item, team-attack matches outside of tournaments? I think free-for-all matches are a blast!

What happened to Sakuri's vision of the Super Smash Bros. series? 4-player free-for-all matches with items on medium/high with 10 stock at Smashville?

Don't get me wrong, I really think the tournament rules should stay for tournaments. If there were 4 player FFA matches at Smashville in tournaments, I think I'd go ballistic. But outside of tournaments where your just playing for bragging rights, it's often fun to play at 75M and throw your opponents into Donkey Kong as they hit the screen and fall to their death. :bee:

So again, why do people need to play with tournament rules outside of tournaments?

I don't like the random wild element of Brawl thats screws up the balance of the game and I'm sure most competitive smashers don't either. Thats why. 9's and misfires are okay though :D

Plus when trying to get better or practicing you can't mess around if you want to get better and are serious about competitive smash, or competitive about anything.

^This. To elaborate, you'll be better prepared for tournament settings if you've learned to play under the tournament ruleset. And since most of us here are primarily concerned with improving our competitive game, i.e. winning tournaments, we practise tournament-style matches. (I know the people I play with don't always extend this to stage bans, though.)

I agree that casual play also has its place, and indeed that's what the game was designed for, but when you're talking about players on SWF, it's just not for us :p

That said: there are plenty of people who do enjoy playing Smash that way. The game has sold 8 million copies, and was designed to be flexible. The majority of those 8 million people likely play exactly as you say. There is just a large minority that likes to play a differently, and they all ended up here on Smashboards. Basically like just 3% of Smashers play like this, which is the hundreds of thousands, but is nothing compared to 7 million+.

If Sakurai really wanted smash to be played like that he wouldn't let people adjust the rules. Versatility and different options have been a large part of the smash series, you play with stock or time or coins. You can block with R or L, grab with Z or A+Shield, You can even play with different controllers. Sakurai wants you to play the game the way you prefer it. And since you're on a competitive smash forum, it's obviuos that everyone is going to prefer to use the tournament rule set.

I don't know anyone who always uses tournament rules. Maybe there are SOME really serious people out there (who are probably scrubs), but most people I've played with/seen like to do FFAs and weird stuff every once in a while.

I mean look at stuff like the Bowser Challenge (three bowsers on a team against you). Tourney players came up with it, and do it all the time. And a lot of really big tournaments have some side events like random characters, or FFA tourneys, or custom stages, or items, or whatever.

At almost all the smashfests I've been to, we play FFAs with items on for some time.

One time after a tournament I played 4-player stamina mode using only luigi's taunt... with all the "tournament" players playing. And then using G&W's sausages too

What people are you playing who only use tournament rules outside of tournaments? Do they even GO to tournaments, or are they just scrubs? Cause in my experience, that doesn't really happen. :ohwell:

I for one get no pleasure out of FFAs, or Items for that matter. The only thing that I like about SSBB is the competitive nature of it. I hate when you get hit by random attacks in an FFA.
The only items I like are Diddy Kong's bananas :)

This also. I am a competitive gamer that enjoys competitive gameplay and the ruleset. When 2 of my friends (not from the community, scrubs) wanted to do a 3-player FFA with me...I was rather pissed.

I like winning. So when my friends want to do FFA. I don't mind as long as I win. Also a friend and myself had a great time doing sudden death 1 minute coin matches on Mushroom kingdom.

The game was meant to be versatile. Thus we are able to make up rules for whatever the occasion.

I'll sum it up for you as quickly as possible.

Smash Brothers can be played two ways. One is for chaos where four individuals play each other where luck is the determining factor of who wins. The second way is to play it in a way that condones the better player winning which is what we, as a competitive community find to be the most fun way to play the game. This does not mean that playing in the Chaotic All Items FFA mode isn't fun for other players, it just isn't our cup of tea.

So why 1vs1?
1. It builds skill.
2. We like to measure ourselves against each other.
3. Preparation for tournament matches. Almost half a million in USD has been spent on Brawl tournaments in less than a calendar year!

I occasionally play free for alls or with items outside of tournament play. I just prefer tournament rulesets though most of the time. That, and I can't practice for a tournament if it's free for all.

I give to you:

There are a lot of people like this, even on wifi.
FFAs are fine by me, but they don't have the lasting appeal of 1v1s. I can play 1v1s for hours upon hours, but FFAs get boring after half an hour or so.
